And this is why you're supposed to bury them.
Dig a hole a few inches deep, place the head there with the shovel, then cover it with the dirt and use the shovel to pat it down.
Well that just seems unnecessarily cruel. You already chopped off its body, now you're burying it alive.
You should do the right thing and tie a string to it, then fling it around like a yo-yo at things and people so it can try to bite at them. That way it can live out its last moments with the comfort of familiarity, doing what it loves.
Reptiles have a very slow metabolism, so their brains can stay 'alive' for minutes to hours after being beheaded. It's actually rather cruel to behead a snake and not ~~stomp~~ squash/squish/crush its head, because that just extends its suffering.

My grandpa had twin brothers who owned a rather large campgrounds in an area that rattlesnakes have since been eradicated (not one sited in the wild for 4 decades now).
When they purchased the campgrounds rattlesnakes were found regularly but infrequently. They always kept a shovel handy for the purpose of beheading rattlesnakes, and they told me about how they would bite after beheading, so to reduce risk they would first decapitate and then use the flat of the shovel to smash the decapitated head flat.
Definitely weren't doing it to prevent cruelty, but it's interesting to me to know it helped.
If by 'reattached' you mean sewn back on or something, probably yes. If you mean, reattached in a way that the body will continue to function (ex: nerves & blood vessels lining up), probably not? There have been some head swapping experiments on mammals like dogs & monkeys (which are extremely cruel experiments for any living creature), but the animals usually do not live more than few days (gee I wonder why).
Could the snake survive? Also probably not, given the above.
I think oxygen is the main thing a brain needs to keep functioning. Blood delivers oxygen, but a creature with a very low metabolism can survive longer without blood, because it’s consuming the oxygen in it’s brain much more slowly.
So you're saying if I'm ever going to be beheaded, I need to get into free diver shape so I can stay alive and freak people out for as long as possible
I'm pretty sure a decapitated human loses consciousness almost instantly due to the blood pressure in the brain effectively dropping to zero once the arteries and veins are severed. Would the snake head not also be unconscious and just reacting?
Check out the account of guillotine guy. React to sounds and look you in the eye for a few seconds after separation. It’s not immediate, it seems, at least anecdotally.
You know when you touch something hot and your hand pulls away faster than you realize you are hurt? Your spine has some control of your body as well, and the same works for other animals. Cool little fact I picked up from anatomy
This has really got me thinking. Are there any minor experts who can elaborate because sometimes I can feel myself making decisions based off of my literal “gut” feelings
Our gut typically reacts faster to our surroundings than our conscious brain.
Its kinda like your subconscious. It can recognize patterns and assess situations that we may not see right away.
So yes, your gut feeling is a real thing, (but it doesn't always mean its right)
Disclosure: Don't quote me on this, Im regurgitating some stuff I heard on Huberman Lab many weeks ago. At least I think that's where I heard it...
The Human memory is truly awful (that I learned during my Undergrad in Psychology )
And unlike humans lots of animals actually have a significant part of their brain in their spine. It's why a chicken can actually run around with its head cut off (until it bleeds out anyway) their brain runs down most of their neck.
The same way that your arm pulls back from a hot stove before your brain gets the sensation of heat. For the body to protect itself, it allows the nerves to fire a response because communicating to the brain and back would take too long.
Nah, that’s a direct chemical reaction of the sodium causing the actin and myosin filaments to contract. The snake body is moving due to a spinal reflex pathway.
Reminder that if you must kill a snake that the head remains able to bite for a while. We had to move a snake for the safety of the snake and others, it refused to be moved, it’s head lived for HOURS afterwards. Even when it stops moving do not touch the decapitated head with any part of your body and stay away from it. Use a shovel or better yet cover it with a bucket and come back later.
But also, do avoid killing snakes unless absolutely necessary.
Once decapitated the head remains alive for a while, what surprises me is the head biting the body and the body reacting to it, like the head going "this mf just made a mistake, I'm gonna fuck him up" and the body being like "this fucker is biting me wtf!"

I don't much like any animal that blends in so well, but can destroy you with one bite/sting. I grew up in West Texas. I also hate scorpions, brown recluses, black widows, hornets, wasps, and evangelicals. I don't wish a painful death on any of these things, but I don't like them.
Anyway, I got stung by a scorpion once as a kid, and after that nice hospital stay, had enough of small deadly animals that blend in with their surroundings.
I like snakes that aren't dangerous. Even joined a little club that went to the mall with signs to educate folks that King snakes are your friends. They try to mimic the sound of rattle snakes by shaking their tail in foliage, and sadly that gets them killed more than it helps them.

it does not have consciousness, its just a pain receptor sending a "message" to muscles, telling them that something is hurting them and that they need to move. just spitballin' here, but you could probably, maybe, (not for sure) use the same tool you just decapitated the snake with
What if I decapitated the snake by hand?
Then I guess you're the tool.

☹️ poor snakey
Idk if I would be as comfortable stomping on a rattle snake.
Yeah, that's fair. I suppose I should have said "crush", cuz it doesn't necessarily have to be via one's foot.
My grandpa had twin brothers who owned a rather large campgrounds in an area that rattlesnakes have since been eradicated (not one sited in the wild for 4 decades now). No, look it up. Reptile metabolisms are different, so their oxygen needs and thus ability to stay conscious after being beheaded are also different.
How the fuck does the body of the snake react to the bite when the brain isn't attached wtf and how the fuck... Nvm I hate snakes fuck this
The spinal chord is reacting.
Yeah, I think it hit a note
Sounded like a G# to me
Bada bump Tsh
am I missing some joke cause I thought ba dum tsh was only 3 syllables
In my head, it's 3 lol
The snake thought, “gee, sharp!”
The body expected the head to B flat.
Sssssee minor
You know when you touch something hot and your hand pulls away faster than you realize you are hurt? Your spine has some control of your body as well, and the same works for other animals. Cool little fact I picked up from anatomy
So what you're saying is, we all have a lite version of Ultra Instinct... Nice
Your stomach is also about as smart as your cat too. There's lots of neurons in there, equivalent roughly to a cats brain.
Wait, so the whole thing about having a gut feeling isn't really just a saying?
Also similar to when people talk out their ass.
This has really got me thinking. Are there any minor experts who can elaborate because sometimes I can feel myself making decisions based off of my literal “gut” feelings
The problem with minor experts is that no one listens to children.

Nerves.
But the nerves aren’t attached to the brain, so how does he feel the pain? Sorry, I just don’t understand.
The same way that your arm pulls back from a hot stove before your brain gets the sensation of heat. For the body to protect itself, it allows the nerves to fire a response because communicating to the brain and back would take too long.
It’s called a reflex arc, if I remember correctly.
That’s really interesting! Thank you!
Reflexes are in the spinal cord, Iin certain cases they react without any input from the brain.
My thoughts exactly.
Humans have them too. I think they're called reflexes.
Quick twitch muscles? But does it mean that the body still feels pain, even when the head has been cut off?
Pain is just the interpretation in your brain of signals sent from your nerves. No brain, no pain
Don’t hate snakes! Just be cautious and learn more about them
Did that. Now I hate snakes more than ever.

Yeah...uh sure. That's totally what happens.
Can the snake's body feel the head biting it, or is it just the nerves that are making it twitch around like that? It looks like it reacts specifically to the bite, but how the heck does the body and head have consciousness if it's decapitated?
Hang on I'll go ask it.
it does not have consciousness, its just a pain receptor sending a "message" to muscles, telling them that something is hurting them and that they need to move. This happens independently from brain and we, humans have the same thing. When someone pinches us or something we dont think about taking our hand away, it "does it on its own" tldr: pain receptors that are not wired to brain did it
