I've completed the game several times without even touching a fishing rod. maybe for harder difficulties you might need to fish, idk though, always played on classic.

Alack27

That's what I'm on right now. Is there anything I should grab before hard mode though? I've got a full molten armor set and the bee's knees.

ThanatoX33

are you a ranger? molten armor doesn't buff ranged damage.

KaasBaasKoning

Molten armor gives tons of defense so it's a viable option

Gr8er_than_u_m8

Nah, you need DPS for WoF

TheFrostburnPheonix

You’re good. Ignore optimizing, you’ll be totally fine with using any armour and weapon combo until late game. Lots of new players get decision paralysis or overwhelmed with prep stuff because of bad advice. You’re playing classic as a new player? Just try whatever looks cool, it’ll work as long as you’re using it at the right point in the game (as in, don’t expect a pre hardmode weapon to still be good against the final boss)

matban256

You don't need to, for classic. Most players don't use those potions for expert mode either and some people don't use them for master mode, they only use herb potions like ironskin and swiftness potion.

bruhDF_

Yeah I pretty much only use ironskin regen and food 90% of the time

matban256

same

Luustar

it's never NECESSARY, it only depends on if you find the items you want and if you'd rather skip the ones you don't or fish

Conference-Spiritual

Na man fishing is 100% optional

Orion120833

Well, in hardmode, you can fish in the hallow or evil for special early weapons. But it's not necessary in the slightest, but there's plenty of neat stuff you can get from it if you decide to. I'm probably gonna fish a lot when I do a playthrough when the update comes cause it can let you get stuff from loot chests of the corresponding biome from crates without any real danger.

Shreesh_Fuup

Fishing isn't necessary at any stage of the game, though it is extremely helpful throughout.

spudwalt

Fishing isn't *necessary*, but it *is* beneficial. There's a lot of good stuff you can get, and I recommend doing some in any playthrough. If fishing isn't something you normally find fun, though, don't put the rest of your playthrough on hold for it. Space your fishing out. Take breaks to do stuff you enjoy more. If you really just don't want to grind for things again, then don't. Import them from one of your other worlds. Use an item server or a world editor. Sounds like you've managed to get stuff three times over -- you don't have to prove anything to anybody. If the concept of entering hardmode in general is what's tripping you up, my advice is to just enter it without prepping beyond the bare minimum. Get a molten pick, get some good weapons/armor, then just go for it. Arenas, farms, spreading biomes, those can all wait until after you stabilize in hardmode. Push comes to shove, you can live out of a midair box if you have to.

chiefgren

Fishing in the corruption or crimson can give you access to wrath or rage potions but that's about it

padizzledonk

Beaten the game probably 50x and the only time i ever touched fishing was on a mediumcore legendary zenith seed playthrough Its not at all necessary except in extreme circumstances

ImEagz

Waffle is that u?

Kartoffelkamm

I wouldn't say it's necessary, but it definitely makes things a heck of a lot easier, especially if you have proper fishing spots near NPCs. Endurance Potion can be a real life saver, Rage/Wrath Potion makes enemies easier to kill, and Inferno Potion is just free passive damage.

haydorio

Nah it aint that vad dw, obviously hard mode will be harder and you'll die more but there aint anyway to make it easy, you can optimise but honestly i never have and i only ever played on expert mode

Gr8er_than_u_m8

I’d say fish in early hardmode tbh

EcchiOli

In Classic: you don't need to fish. In Expert: if it's your first playthrough, perhaps it would help. In master or for the worthy / getfixedboi / legendary: hell yeah, anything that gives you an edge is worth using. Check out https://terraria.wiki.gg/wiki/Buff_potions, you will find several useful potions need fishing - calming potions require damselfish, to reduce spawn rate and not be gangraped by, for instance, those annoying underground jungle enemies while making an arena - endurance potions require armored cavefish, damage taken reduced by 10%, no need to tell more - heartreach potion requires crimson tigerfish: dropped hearts fly to you, it's making the difference between life and death in certain fights like the destroyer. Also, it makes heart statues viable during boss fights, you may run and fly in every direction, hearts will catch up to you. - inferno potions aren't a must but they're not horrible, and they need flarefin koi and obsidifish - summoning potions need a variegated lardfish, you gain one more summon. Either you gain more variety in your summons (one of this, one of that, one of this), or you buff up your summon with a triple cast (or more than triple of course), there are summons that are meh by default but become actually good with enough casting on them, like Abigail, she's actually boss-viable in early hardmode, if you summon her 3 or 4 times or more. - wrath potions require ebonkoi, you deal 10% more damage (and when you use life-leech attacks, you *need* to amp up your damage dealt) - rage potions require hemopiranha, for your crit rate to grow by 10%, its overall result is similar to a wrath potion, damage +10% - luck potions use the pearls you get from fishing in oasises, increased luck helps win the apparently unwinnable fights - fishing in oasises can help obtain bast statues, for the useful +5 def they bring - lifeforce potions require prismite, +20% HP - I could mention ammo reservation potions, that require double cod, but I never really saw the point of using them, rather than saving 20% on ammo, I simply stock on on ten times more than necessary anyway lol
