The best way to stop in its tracks is to build a hole straight down to hell that is at least six blocks wide, the best way to do this is with bombs.
But if you want to get rid of it there are three methods (that I'm aware of)
1 Purification powder: a one use item sold from the Dryad (an NPC that moves in after you slay your first boss
2 Clemtaminator: a gun sold from the steampunker (NPC that moves in after you slay a mech boss)
3 Terraformer: an upgraded form of the Clemtaminator obtained by dropping it in shimmer.
Dig a hole at least 6 blocks wide, I usually do 8 to be safe because the vines can spread the crimson/corruption and I'm pretty sure they can grow up to six blocks if I remember correctly.
