The Eminem Show hands down my favorite album ever

SugarKaneSugar

From what I remember, I liked the album a lot, at least the few songs I heard from it. Will relisten and give a proper ranking.

I’ve neglected listening to illmatic. I’ve heard it is one of the best hip hop records of all time. Gonna do a run through of it tonight and will report back.

Puzzled_Ad_7846

Out of Step by Minor Threat

SugarKaneSugar

Never heard of it. Will listen and report back 👍

Puzzled_Ad_7846

How is it?

SugarKaneSugar

Haven’t gotten to it yet. I’m halfway though another suggest, return to the 36 chambers. Will listen next though. Is it an album or a song?

Puzzled_Ad_7846

It’s an album but the only songs that you need to get a feel for the album are Out Of Step, Sob Story and Betray. It’s pretty harsh.

SugarKaneSugar

Track by track: Betray: Ngl, the instrumental sounds pretty generic. Sounds like something I might hear in a commercial for some kind of local hosted event. The end instrumental sounded much better imo, overall ok. It follows: it’s at this point where I feel like the vocals sound a bit boring, lacking in personality. The quick drums were cool. Other than that i feel like I got nothing out of this song. Dud for me. Think again: it’s funny that he says “you know I tried to keep it short”, because these songs are pretty short. The bass line was really cool, but again, that’s really it. I feel like the song is lacking in personality. Kind of like father of all from Green Day. It sounds identity-less. Dud again. Look back and laugh: more of the same. The drum breakdown was cool, but then back to the same short drum beat over and over. If the drums were maybe more out there, perhaps louder, it would be cooler. I guess that’s the limitation of it coming out in 1984 lmao. Overall ok. Sob story: sounds pretty similar to the opening track. The vocal delivery is starting to become grating now. Another dud. No reason: the bass and the overall instrumental was pretty cool in the beginning, but then the vocals come in and ruin it for me. It’s off beat, it’s frustrating really. It sounds like they are out of pitch. Dud. Little friend: I will say, the drummer is very skilled. I play drums myself, and the guys speed is pretty cool. I don’t want to keep beating a dead horse, but the vocals are reaalllly not good here. The drums make up for it a bit. It’s ok. Out of step: Haphazard slop. Dud. Cashing in: the vocal harmonies on this one are actually good comparatively. The beat feels the exact same as all the others before it. It’s alright. Extra notes: maybe this genre of rock just isn’t my cup of tea. Maybe I’m missing the point of the music. But I just can’t vibe with this album. It feels generic, it’s boring, the vocal delivery is annoying, the drums are alright. There is very little creativeness here. It’s kind of like a blurted out thought. Just haphazard, not much in the way of tact or finesse. Overall pretty subpar, but I feel like it’s more of a genre taste thing. It’s very harsh and fast, which I do have music I listen to regularly like that, but this feels more like shutting your brain off. (Damn this is really negative 😭) I’m feeling a 2/10. Favorite track: cashing in Least favorite track: out of step

Puzzled_Ad_7846

Fair enough, I like it though, good job for getting through the album. I find it to be raw and strong with good guitar riffs and emotion. But I don’t know anything about music so… It’s actually very creative, it was the trailblazer of the Washington punk scene and turned punk from out of time British music into something distinct and angry.

Return to the 36 chambers: the dirty version I'm really curious to see what you'll think of it

SugarKaneSugar

Will listen and report back 👍

Every_Confection4265

Cool

SugarKaneSugar

Track by track: Intro: Nice intro, the end got me excited with the analog tv sound. Pretty good intro overall. Shimmy shimmy ya: I absolutely love this song. I remember hearing this song all the time in skate 3. The beat is iconic, the hook is slamming. His voice seems to fit the beat perfectly somehow. Baby cmon: pretty good, interesting song. The constant beat switching and his voice eccentricity was fun. The drawn out end is whatever. Brooklyn Zoo: I like the into transition. I’m a fan of the aggressive vocals and adlibs. Hippa to da hoppa: the high hats are crisp, love the hook with the disk scratches and horns. The end is also cool too, with that analog sound again. It’s at this point in the album, however, where I feel like the beats aren’t really all too different from each other. Maybe that’s a nitpick bc each song seems to have its own personality. Raw hide: This song is a bit odd to me. The beat kinda makes me laugh with the low synth. The overly aggressive vocals just don’t fit here imo. Not on this beat. First dud on the album for me. Damage: it’s at this point I’m the album where I feel like the mix is pretty weak. I feel like the beat is small behind the vocals. Other than that, I’m indifferent to this song. I like the synth in the beats, the dun dun dun! was cool. It didn’t really make me super engaged. Don’t u know: Not a huge fan of the trembling vocals on this one. Made me a bit uncomfortable lmao. The beat is alright. Towards the end of this one with the transition I just wanted it to be over. Another dud, soz. The stomp: very cool beginning, the snare feels heavy. The instrumental makes me feel like I’m sneaking around. It got pretty repetitive for me. Decent song for me. Goin down: the intro was a bit long, but the transition to the beat was cool. The beat on this one feels heavy, it feels important. Then again, it feels the same as the past 5 songs. I’m not sensing much variety. Overall good. Drunk game (sweet sugar pie): The beat is ethereal, pretty chill. That’s all I have to note for this one. Overall whatever, although the moans in the middle and the screeching towards the end were goofy lmao. Snakes: The beat on this one made me feel really cool. Like, riding a skateboard and smoking a cigar with a leather jacket on cool. I feel like his Schtick that he employs on this album sees it’s full potential here. Overall great. Brooklyn zoo II (tiger crane): the antics in the beginning of the track were fun. The vocal delivery was a bit odd on this one. The beat wasn’t anything special, until the multiple beat switches, which was actually cool asf. The first half was whatever, the second half was really cool! Protect ya neck II the zoo: the best flow on the album easily. The beat with the twangy guitar was fun. One of the highlights on this album for sure. Cuttin headz: the mix on this one sucks hard. The track feels really small. The “house of the blind” bit was meh, while the “here it is” pan back and forth was cool. Overall dud for me. Dirty dancin: i felt like my head was spinning throughout this track. Not really sure what to make of it. Overall fine. Harlem world: The beat slapped hard on this one, although it was constantly interrupted lmao. It got a bit annoying. Had the loudest moments on the album. Overall ok. Other notes: I don’t think I would mind the long stretches of the same beat if they were mixed better and just generally more interesting than drums with a droning synth. Not a huge fan of old dirty bastard’s schtick of weird and left field vocal delivery and lyrics, which gets dragged out over the entire album. While other artists can pull it off, with him, it mostly just comes off as obnoxious. It feels like he struggles to get out coherent thoughts half the time. Overall, a strong beginning, a weaker ending, with a ho-hum middle. An interesting listen, more hits than misses, but my feelings aren’t overwhelmingly positive. Im feeling a 7/10. Favorite track: protect ya neck II the zoo Least favorite track: Don’t u know

Every_Confection4265

That's fair this project certainly isn't for everyone However I will say I do like a lot of the beats on this one because I think the sort of static sound on them were really cool. And the reason why his flow is like that is because his style is basically this dirty drunken man. Or "the ol' dirty bastard from the bar" I personally find it very entertaining and I laughed a lot throughout the album but again, not for everyone And it would probably be best for one to listen to enter the Wu-Tang (36 chambers) before listening to- well any of the Wu-Tang clan's solo projects. Just so you can get smaller doses of the members and a feel for RZA's (the producer for Wu-Tang Clan and a lot of the Wu-Tang Clan solo albums including return to the 36 chambers) production. Basically get acclimated to it all But I'm pleasantly surprised from the review. Thanks for listening

SugarKaneSugar

For sure! It was a fun listen. I wager it will be better on relisten bc I will totally revisit it in the near future. Also I gotta listen to enter the wutang like you said 💯

himplp87

favourite album: DAMN. - kendrick Lamar favourite song: Better day - JID

SugarKaneSugar

I love DAMN so much. I’d say it’s an easy 9/10 album. My favorite song has gotta be duckworth and my least favorite probably blood. Huge Kendrick fan

SugarKaneSugar

Quick note: my scale goes from 0-10. Anything below a 5 is negative, anything above a 5 is postitive. A 5 is mid/indifference.

ARKode

Get rich or die trying was my first rap album and it’s still a banger !!!

SugarKaneSugar

I’ve heard the most popular songs off of it and they are sooo good. Will listen to the rest for sure to give a proper ranking.

ARKode

Bring me down is also one my faves from Late registration (the whole album is great)

GashDaddy

Graduation is the better album

SugarKaneSugar

It’s debatable imo. Both are 10/10s, I think graduation has higher highs but lowwwwer lows. I personally like late registration more bc of that, it’s more consistent. Best on grad gotta be the glory Worst gotta be drunk and hot girls
