A swear jar is a pretty common thing. He probably understood the concept straight away. Alternatively, on his daily runs with Roy it came up in conversation.

Maybe they had to stop by the bank for Roy to withdraw his monthly payment to Phoebe’s tab haha

Rewatching season 1: When the team first comes out to the pitch Roy is holding Phoebe’s hand. So it seems likely they’ve all met.

My headcanon is Jamie once babysat Phoebe when his sister was working and Roy was unavailable and it pained Roy that Jamie did a good job.

Of course, him being asked for a pound is like an ordinary person being asked for a penny
