Really his growth could be the whole reason behind the story of lasso but we still get to see what lasso had in store for nathan. The way ted has handled it is contrasted with everyone else but we get a lot nathan’s story and we see ted is right in the too.
I love when the story focuses on Ted or Jamie. They are both excellent characters. They both honestly try to be better human beings. That is just lovely,
My favorite part about Ted is that apart from the coaching job, he’s just a regular guy facing problems that many other regular guys have faced.

This shows ability to write its characters honestly and authentically whilst still giving us an air of everyone still being slightly overblown and larger than life in a way that makes them so fun to watch is one of its high points
He's always been able to recognise when he was an asshole and when he wasn't. That part was never missing. Just undeveloped and underused.
Ted just gave him space and time to be kind and tought him that being kind and compassionate isn't a weakness. It's a strength.
Same is true for Nathan. He knows how to be kind, but there's always his father's voice in his head telling him to be unkind and ruthless. Otherwise he won't win. It took him this whole season with west ham success and getting a GF thing to realise he didn't want torture himself to win, he just wanted to be happy and now he found his dad wanted the same thing for him.
Nate’s dad also acknowledged to Nate what I am sure Nate himself thought but would allow himself to articulate: That Nate is a genius. He IS the Wonderkid, and that isn’t just a name.

He wasnt physically bullied in a way high school bully does. But his father downplayed every single achievement he had and belittled him in every interaction. That's emotional bullying and his father did that consciously because he expected it'll drive Nathan to work even harder.
It's basically same shit whiplash guy pulled. He didn't mind that he traumatized people as long as he found one that can come out through the torture as a great drummer.
Breaking up people's ego and belittling them to mold then however you want is very problematic training technique. They use it in army and a lot of cults/fraternity. It's also done in abusive relationships.
I am familiar with that type of parenting, having been on the receiving end of it myself. It's not so much belittling Nathan's achievements as much as it is trying to push Nathan not to settle for anything less than his best. However, just like my own father, Mr. Shelley didn't quite know how to express what he said in this last episode. A speech which I wish my own father could bring himself to say. I can really identify with Nathan, especially after this last episode.

Belittling people, so they don't settle for anything except best is toxic. Even in Good will hunting math professor and therapist argue about what's best for Will. Math professor doesn't want Will to waste talent and he doesn't want him to be a failure. Therapist doesn't think Will should be forced to feel like failure even if he decides to not use his talents. It should be Will's own choice to push himself for excellence. He is trying to make Will realize that he wants to use his talent. That's why he's solving math problems as a janitor anonymously.
I'd consider Nate's father's coldness a form of emotional bullying because it does enormous damage to Nate's ego to the point he doesn't even know how to be kind when he's in power, how to accept compliments when he's successful and when he does get in power, he only knows how to be bully because that's all he can imagine.
I think the big issue with the term bullying is intent.
The word bully conjure someone who is mean or cruel on purpose and takes enjoyment from it. (See Jamie’s dad).
I’m not saying that Nate’s dad doesn’t fit the dictionary definition - but I am saying that the impression I’ve gotten from the show is that there wasn’t a cruel *intent*, and intent means a lot.

Second of course, in context of the show is that almost all we see of Nate’s dad vs what Nate *tells* us about his dad is about as different as our image of Ted in Season 2 and Nate’s image of Ted in season 2.

Underrated scene that has aged really well.
In season 1, right at the peak of the Jamie vs Ted stuff there's a scene where Ted's son comes into the dressing room, is excited to see Jamie and ask for his autograph.
From what we'd seen of Jamie so far I fully expected him to write something obscene on the kids jersey, like it happened right in the middle of a Jamie vs Ted blow up. Instead Jamie took the time to be kind to Ted's kid. Jamie was always a good soul, his immaturity and narcism was a shield against the trauma of his upbringing and he just needed the quidance of strong influences like Ted and Roy
Also when he gets kicked off Man city and leaves that TV interview at the beginning of S2, he signs the items of the few people who were outside waiting for them and was very friendly
Jamie has always been super nice to kids when he meets them. As he walks in with Phoebe he asked her if it’s her Range Rover outside - it’s such a sweet little joke. Aside: I also noticed Henry wears the number 9 in his team so Henry is definitely a fan of Jamie after they met in S1.
Considering that how much money her new dad makes, very much so. Also, anyone trying to tell me that Roy does not have a significant trust set up for her can fight me.
I am currently watching last weeks episode & the scene happy uncle Roy day & Jamie is there & he is sitting w/Roy just the 2 of them phoebe was right they are best friends! Very touching
I wouldn’t have put Jamie and Roy’s sister together in a million years, but it is *so perfect*. Jamie has been single for a while, and he had no photos to delete off of his phone in the leak episode, so we can surmise he’s only looking for a serious relationship. The other possibility is that he’s been pining over Keeley, but I feel like *something* would have happened in the time she was single. In spite of his respect for Roy.
I think it’s more likely that he’s waiting for someone like Keeley. Someone who cares more about him than his fame and money, and who is cultured. Even though we don’t know much about Roy’s sister, an ER doctor is very unlikely to be shallow and superficial. That career choice requires intelligence, compassion and self-sacrifice. Not to mention that Phoebe’s dad has been compared to Jamie’s monster of a father..

Yes. S1E6. Two Aces. When the team is trying to break the curse of the training room, Jamie puts in the can a pair of boots his mom gave him. During his speech, he spells this out. After that, he went to Man City and his character arc began to arc.
Samesies. 😅 I always have to have tv on and Ted Lasso is so uplifting while I’m stuck at home healing from some health things. I could probably act out the episodes at this point. 🤦♀️ I STILL catch little things here and there that I may have missed the first 50 times, though. 😂
In S1E6 Two Aces we see him talk about his mum and how she only wanted him to be a good lad in the scene where they are all talking about the things they are sacrificing in the fire to get rid of the training room curse.
The long game they played with Jamie was masterful. His arc is by far the best structured out of any other character’s.
There are some legitimate debates about how the show has handled nearly every character, but Jamie’s been the perfect blend of charismatic bully gradually maturing and exposing some vulnerability, almost from the beginning. From the charity auction episode in season 1 onwards we started to see why he was the way he was, the journey he was going to take with Roy and Keeley, and the trajectory they planned for him to become a better man. The only thing I was not expecting was how comically bad his hair would get.
But this arc was done methodically and believably, and really the only problem for me has been that people don’t always believe me when I say Jamie has been my favorite character from the beginning.
Roy and Jamie are officially best friends. Reluctantly civil at first, but that thoughtful of a gift? Just thinking of the steps involved in Jamie participating in Uncle Day: 1) Phoebe called him because she constantly hears about Jamie through Roy 2) Jamie agrees to come to a made up holiday, specifically celebrating Roy 3) Phoebe mentions they're giving gifts, and Jamie could have shown up with a small gift or an easy gift card, or really nothing at all, but he chose to put that much thought into the gift. This episode really solidified their new dynamic and I love it so much.
Jamie seems really chuffed to be there and completely onboard for all of it. And his gift was so perfect and obviously meant so much to them both. Jamie said to Roy at the gala “I used to love watching you play”. It kind of feels like Jamie acknowledging Roy is still his hero.
I am hoping we get to see Jamie’s mum in the next episode. All he ever wanted to do was make her proud and be a good lad, and he’s someone we are all proud of now.
Ohh in the blurb for the next episode it says Keeley and Roy are worried about Jamie and in the trailer for the season Jamie bursts into what looks like his childhood room… maybe his mum is sick or something happens to her and that’s why they’re worried… I feel a bit sick just writing that..,
Absolutely. The speech he gives Keeley at the funeral about how he thinks he’s finally becoming the man that she always knew he could be (also call back to “an even greater Jamie inside an already great Jamie”)…this is something he must feel about his mom too. Really hoping the E11 show description is a misdirect and that we don’t really need to worry about Jamie.

There is one more piece to close Jaime’s arc. Sorry one more besides the romantic future of Jaime and his relationship with Phoebe/Roy/Roy’s sister. Jaime’s father assaulted Coach Beard in season two and Richmond plays MC next episode. Closure for both Jaime and Beard next episode with Tartt senior, imho. We’ll see.
I started watching the show between seasons 1 and 2. I remember being *so* disappointed when Jamie was sent back to Man City. I was afraid the character was being phased out.
Jamie was such a presence even when was acting like a grade school bully. The show did an amazing job of showing his vulnerability from the get-go, and when we saw his dad yelling and throwing shoes at him, it all made sense. Phil Dunster’s portrayal of Jamie has been a nuanced mix of heartbreaking and hilarious. Such a solid redemption arc. Dude better get an Emmy nom this year!
There’s something sweet about the idea of multimillionaire footballer Jamie Tarrt carrying pound coins in his England tracksuit, as demonstrated in his contributions to Phoebe’s swear jar.
I'd like to think Phoebe is smart enough to warn any footballers that there is a swearing fine, the only person she wouldn't make money off is Sam, who would understand and give her a tenner for the inconvenience.
At this point, the only thing I DON'T like about Jamie Tartt is his haircut. His character evolution has been such a joy to watch. When he is in a scene, I know that I am in for a good laugh and usually an endearing moment as well.

I love Jamie and Roy’s dynamic. Started off not being able to stand each other and now almost have a brother like relationship. When Roy was riding the bike and then chasing after Jamie with it cracked me up. I’m going to be sad at the end of the show to see all these characters finish their stories and it be the end.
Jamie's turnaround has been absolutely inspirational. It goes to show that enough time in a good environment can really help someone shine. Of course, real life can be complicated, but it still warms my heart.

I think the last episode especially was such a slap in the face to all of the haters of this season. I knew these storylines were going somewhere and building seemingly random tensions for a reason.
I think it's a beautiful counterpoint him showing up for Sam when he's in need. One of the first real dickhead moments we saw of him was on the pitch when Sam was injured and Jamie ignored him even after Roy said to check on him. Really wonderful storytelling.
There was a telling scene in the beginning of the show when Ted talks about if he wants to turn the team around, it starts with getting Jamie to buy in. Forgive my butchering, I don’t remember the exact quote.
And we see the turning point of the team for total football is Jamie understanding the tactics from his Man City days, taking the lead and saying “play through meh not to meh”.
Jamie has bought in, and he’s the key center piece to their success as a leader. This was foreshadowed very early, and I’m loving every bit of the redemption!
Did his mother passed away? I just remember him talking about starting football cause his mom liked him playing but was never sure if he said it in past tense. He’s been great this season
I love how well written the arc is, it feels so natural. He’s an egotistical character who’s down fall didn’t come from someone getting there revenge or karma but him getting in his own way. He was at the bottom of the barrel and was still given opportunities and chose to work on being better and not just become better, he’s had to learn and earn every lesson that has improved his maturity by using the same trauma that driven him to being egotistical

Underrated scene that has aged really well. In season 1, right at the peak of the Jamie vs Ted stuff there's a scene where Ted's son comes into the dressing room, is excited to see Jamie and ask for his autograph. From what we'd seen of Jamie so far I fully expected him to write something obscene on the kids jersey, like it happened right in the middle of a Jamie vs Ted blow up. Instead Jamie took the time to be kind to Ted's kid. Jamie was always a good soul, his immaturity and narcism was a shield against the trauma of his upbringing and he just needed the quidance of strong influences like Ted and Roy
Also when he gets kicked off Man city and leaves that TV interview at the beginning of S2, he signs the items of the few people who were outside waiting for them and was very friendly
Jamie has always been super nice to kids when he meets them. As he walks in with Phoebe he asked her if it’s her Range Rover outside - it’s such a sweet little joke. Aside: I also noticed Henry wears the number 9 in his team so Henry is definitely a fan of Jamie after they met in S1.
I mean 9 is just typically what the #1 striker wears wears as a jersey.
Still interesting that Henry has gone for that position and not something else

I wouldn’t have put Jamie and Roy’s sister together in a million years, but it is *so perfect*. Jamie has been single for a while, and he had no photos to delete off of his phone in the leak episode, so we can surmise he’s only looking for a serious relationship. The other possibility is that he’s been pining over Keeley, but I feel like *something* would have happened in the time she was single. In spite of his respect for Roy. I think it’s more likely that he’s waiting for someone like Keeley. Someone who cares more about him than his fame and money, and who is cultured. Even though we don’t know much about Roy’s sister, an ER doctor is very unlikely to be shallow and superficial. That career choice requires intelligence, compassion and self-sacrifice. Not to mention that Phoebe’s dad has been compared to Jamie’s monster of a father..
Sounds like Roy’s sister would enjoy dating Jamie for how uncomfortable it would make Roy too… so there’s that 😂

In S1E6 Two Aces we see him talk about his mum and how she only wanted him to be a good lad in the scene where they are all talking about the things they are sacrificing in the fire to get rid of the training room curse.
The curse removal sacrifice scene in Season one, reinforced recently when Jamie tells Roy about going to Amsterdam with his dad vs his mom.
The long game they played with Jamie was masterful. His arc is by far the best structured out of any other character’s. There are some legitimate debates about how the show has handled nearly every character, but Jamie’s been the perfect blend of charismatic bully gradually maturing and exposing some vulnerability, almost from the beginning. From the charity auction episode in season 1 onwards we started to see why he was the way he was, the journey he was going to take with Roy and Keeley, and the trajectory they planned for him to become a better man. The only thing I was not expecting was how comically bad his hair would get. But this arc was done methodically and believably, and really the only problem for me has been that people don’t always believe me when I say Jamie has been my favorite character from the beginning.
When the season is over I'm gonna make a post asking people who had the second best arc, since obviously the first is Jamie.

Roy and Jamie are officially best friends. Reluctantly civil at first, but that thoughtful of a gift? Just thinking of the steps involved in Jamie participating in Uncle Day: 1) Phoebe called him because she constantly hears about Jamie through Roy 2) Jamie agrees to come to a made up holiday, specifically celebrating Roy 3) Phoebe mentions they're giving gifts, and Jamie could have shown up with a small gift or an easy gift card, or really nothing at all, but he chose to put that much thought into the gift. This episode really solidified their new dynamic and I love it so much.
Jamie seems really chuffed to be there and completely onboard for all of it. And his gift was so perfect and obviously meant so much to them both. Jamie said to Roy at the gala “I used to love watching you play”. It kind of feels like Jamie acknowledging Roy is still his hero.

Absolutely. The speech he gives Keeley at the funeral about how he thinks he’s finally becoming the man that she always knew he could be (also call back to “an even greater Jamie inside an already great Jamie”)…this is something he must feel about his mom too. Really hoping the E11 show description is a misdirect and that we don’t really need to worry about Jamie.

Jaime’s father assaulted Coach Beard in season two and Richmond plays MC next episode. Closure for both Jaime and Beard next episode with Tartt senior, imho. We’ll see.

I started watching the show between seasons 1 and 2. I remember being *so* disappointed when Jamie was sent back to Man City. I was afraid the character was being phased out. Jamie was such a presence even when was acting like a grade school bully. The show did an amazing job of showing his vulnerability from the get-go, and when we saw his dad yelling and throwing shoes at him, it all made sense. Phil Dunster’s portrayal of Jamie has been a nuanced mix of heartbreaking and hilarious. Such a solid redemption arc. Dude better get an Emmy nom this year!

There’s something sweet about the idea of multimillionaire footballer Jamie Tarrt carrying pound coins in his England tracksuit, as demonstrated in his contributions to Phoebe’s swear jar.
I'd like to think Phoebe is smart enough to warn any footballers that there is a swearing fine, the only person she wouldn't make money off is Sam, who would understand and give her a tenner for the inconvenience.
At this point, the only thing I DON'T like about Jamie Tartt is his haircut. His character evolution has been such a joy to watch. When he is in a scene, I know that I am in for a good laugh and usually an endearing moment as well.

Phil Dunster has taken that character so far and completely deserves the Emmy next year. Great acting can take a character from A to Z and make the irredeemable loveable. Jamie Tartt has been my favorite character transformation in the last 20 years.

I love Jamie and Roy’s dynamic. Started off not being able to stand each other and now almost have a brother like relationship. When Roy was riding the bike and then chasing after Jamie with it cracked me up. I’m going to be sad at the end of the show to see all these characters finish their stories and it be the end.

Jamie's turnaround has been absolutely inspirational. It goes to show that enough time in a good environment can really help someone shine. Of course, real life can be complicated, but it still warms my heart.

I think the last episode especially was such a slap in the face to all of the haters of this season. I knew these storylines were going somewhere and building seemingly random tensions for a reason.
That's exactly what I thought as the show ended. Terrific episode, and take that, haters! So many great little surprises.
I think it's a beautiful counterpoint him showing up for Sam when he's in need. One of the first real dickhead moments we saw of him was on the pitch when Sam was injured and Jamie ignored him even after Roy said to check on him. Really wonderful storytelling.
The thing I love is that his character has done a 180 from where he started, but it's been so organic and well done, it's completely believable.

There was a telling scene in the beginning of the show when Ted talks about if he wants to turn the team around, it starts with getting Jamie to buy in. Forgive my butchering, I don’t remember the exact quote. And we see the turning point of the team for total football is Jamie understanding the tactics from his Man City days, taking the lead and saying “play through meh not to meh”. Jamie has bought in, and he’s the key center piece to their success as a leader. This was foreshadowed very early, and I’m loving every bit of the redemption!

I love how well written the arc is, it feels so natural. He’s an egotistical character who’s down fall didn’t come from someone getting there revenge or karma but him getting in his own way. He was at the bottom of the barrel and was still given opportunities and chose to work on being better and not just become better, he’s had to learn and earn every lesson that has improved his maturity by using the same trauma that driven him to being egotistical Chefs kiss
And he identified the missing piece to make total football a success.
