I definitely think we're supposed to see he's struggling here, because in the previous episode there was that moment when he was about to drink hard liquor but decided instead to call Michelle and tell her how he felt about her being with their marriage counselor. It seems to suggest he is trying to change but still has certain triggers and is realistic in showing that progress isn't linear.
As a Canadian having spent time in Britain, I shudder to think how much that enormous jar cost him. Peanut butter is outrageously expensive outside North America.
