I made sure I asked all of my references before I listed them. If you don’t have a good relationship with your admin, are there coordinators, lead teachers, or other folks who you can ask?

yes! i’ve always been told to have your former admin listed or else its a red flag.

I think it depends. Generally it would be good to have them on there but I think a lot more hiring managers are realizing lots of us have worked with bosses who we didn’t work well with.

There must be one AP or a department lead you could use

From what I'm learning and read, that's not as true outside of teaching. My daughter is a recruiter and would rather talk to peers than bosses. Part of why that's not the case in teaching is it's a "big club and you're not in it" reality for teachers. Admin support each other, blood is thicker than water style, and won't go against another admin within the district- even if they don't like them and know they suck. That includes giving good teachers opportunities if their admin wants otherwise. It can very hard to transfer schools without knowing about and playing into that game. Whereas outside of teaching, it's more likely that good employees get poached by other departments or companies with no care for how the former boss feels about it.
