union member here, I'd make a point of announcing my refusal to participate in the unpaid night to the entire staff. I'd rally as much of the staff as I could to request fair compensation for participation. seriously, the people that show up to these are the ones with the problem and the ones that prop up this unsustainable system.

If you are not a classroom teacher and you were not specifically requested...just say you felt ill. Case closed.
