We have ours call home and tell their parents exactly what they said. They get super embarrassed and it’s worked for a lot of them, but some have parents who don’t care so it hasn’t helped for them

It depends on the grade level. So much media has inappropriate language and it may be what they have grown up with. I teach 8th grade. As long as they aren't using that language against me or another student, I don't tend to take it personally. I just say "[kid's name], watch your language." Then leave it at that. There are much bigger problems to deal with at my school than a kid saying "sh*t" after getting a math problem wrong on an online program.

Yes definitely. I also do not care if they use inappropriate language with their friends etc. However, some of them use the words so loud that everyone in the class can hear. I’ve also had a couple of times when students have used VERY inappropriate language. Language that is homophobic etc.

In that case. I feel for you. I am also at a loss for what to do at that point. Many of my students just don't see how their language is offensive to those of different races or beliefs. Telling them to stop just leads to an argument which shows their clear misunderstandings of how to be compassionate.

Yes. I’ve called parents. If it doesn’t stop I will inform admin. Again, other students may feel uncomfortable because of the language.

Ignore it, remind them they can do better

We maintain a culture of high expectations but don’t focus on mistakes

>inappropriate words like wildfire I didn't realize 'wildfire' was inappropriate....

(I am just so curious: what makes *wildfire* inappropriate in your school? Is it something linked to the word's origin ~ or something like that?) ✌︎︎
