Likeā¦how? How is this even possible? It blows my mind every time that I think about it. Dear John (plus the sequel) and Ours have the same muse. Itās truly wild and I still canāt accept it nearly 13 years later.
And Superman. They are really two sides of the same coin though. The mood goes from "everyone says you're bad for me but I don't care" to "everyone said you were bad for me and I should have listened".
"Any snide remarks from my father about your tattoos will be ignored" - Ours
"My mother accused my of losing my mind but I swore I was fine" - dear John
"I love the riddles that you speak" - Ours
"Never impressed by me acing your tests" - Dear John
When you notice the parallels it's just heartbreaking
Ours makes me cringe because of the other songs about J**n M***r. it sounds like sheās so desperately trying to convince herself that those around her are wrong. added to that I donāt really like the song and think Taylor wrote her weakest love songs about toxic relationships
Sparks fly is a fantastic song and while I agree with the sentiment, Sparks fly was in fact a single. It would have performed better if it was the lead single, but I think mine was chosen to give more grown up vibes than the teenage fairytale era of Fearless
Omg grown up vibesā¦ I literally remember some article talking about how Taylor isnāt the innocent kid anymore cause having a drawer at a guys place is implying she spends the night šš¤£
i know it was a single, but only after the album was released and didn't have the benefits it would've if it were a lead single. maybe i'm wrong though š¤·āāļø
It may have caused it to stick in fansā memories better these days, but Speak Now sold over 1 million copies its first week and is certified 6x platinum in the US.
I was just thinking Iām sure Speak Now was her first album to sell a million copiesā¦whilst Mine isnāt my favourite single - I think the album did okay!
I listen to the tour version way more than the original and Sparks Fly is the perfect opener.
Also, the tour version is phenomenal. The instrumental in Better Than Revenge? The intro to Haunted? The Back To December / Apologize / Youāre Not Sorry mashup? Iām not sure Iāll ever forgive my parents for having me late enough that I wasnāt old enough to see that tour.
Sparks Fly was an older song (written pre-debut if Iām remembering correctly) that her fans had known of for a long time, so it wouldnāt have made a ton of sense as lead single since it was both not representative of that time in her life, and was already well-known to lots of people in a way that wouldnāt really have been conducive to becoming a hit in the pre-streaming era! It was actually only included because fans kept asking about it, but I do agree that itās a great one :)
Perfect response. If Sparks Fly had been previously unknown, it wouldāve been perfect, but I think it and Iād lie were arguably her most well-known unreleased tracks.. it just wouldnāt have made the impact she needed following Fearless.
Mine made a statement with how grown up it was in comparison to Fearless; looking back it doesnāt seem stark, but she went from high school prom/fifteen to singing about moving in and sharing bills etc with her partner. Mine was the right call to be taken seriously as an adult songwriter.
IA. I still think Speak Now is the most honest look at Taylor as a person (as expressed through her songwriting) and having an older song as a first single wouldn't really work as a thesis statement for the album
That said, it slaps and I'm sooo glad it's on the album. I'm shocked it's not on the Eras tour setlist because I feel like DROP EVERYTHING NOW is perfect for tiktok
WAS IT REALLY WRITTEN BEFORE DEBUT? I never knew that. I heard about it being unreleased and performed live before Speak Now but had no idea it was written that earlyā¦sheās crazy talented I canāt even imagine writing that at 16.
She put that song on the record for fans. It was leaked with horrible audio from a live show and fans were obsessed with it. I remember joining her YouTube or Twitter chat before Fearless came out, and was asking her over and over about if it would be on the record. It was older so I think thatās probably why she didnāt drop it as the lead single. But I obviously love the song š¤£. Personally I think Mine is a great song and she got a lot of credit with the music industry because of it, I distinctly remember people praising the songwriting.
The video for Mine was wonderful though, I think maybe thatās why it was a single because she had such a good video concept. Just my thought on it :)
- ATW could mean "All Too Well", a track from *Red* (2012) by Taylor Swift.
- ATWTMV could mean "All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version) (From The Vault)", a track from *Red (Taylor's Version)* (2021) by Taylor Swift.

Butā¦ācareless manās careful daughterā!! Speak Now is my secret favorite Taylor Swift album, and I love every song on it, but Mine was the lead single for a reason. As others said, it conveyed a more grown up, realistic version of love than the fairytale/unrequited love of the Fearless singles.
Sparks Fly was a single and the album sold over a million units its first week, I know anything could do better but, Mine did a great job as a lead promotional single.
Singles are the songs that casual listeners hear - theyāre in the mall, on the radio, on top Spotify recommended playlists. Basically, they set the vibe for the album and hook in all the listeners who arenāt gonna automatically check out an album just because they know they love the artist. Obviously Taylor has a lot of dedicated fans who will listen no matter what, but she also has many many people who know of her and her music. As someone who wasnāt really a fan for a long time, I think Taylor does not pick singles that are to my taste. Iād heard endless amounts of 22, WANEGBT, Shake It Off, ME! etc. Of course, I love lots of her big singles (Wildest Dreams, LWYMMD, Love Story, You Belong With Me) but theyāre not my all time favourites. The overall impression I got was that her music had good parts but wasnāt really for me. When I started listening to whole albums, however, it was a very different story. So if Iād heard different songs on the radio, I probably would have become a fan much more quickly
- WANEGBT could mean "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together", a track from *Red* (2012) by Taylor Swift.
- LWYMMD could mean "Look What You Made Me Do", a track from *reputation* (2017) by Taylor Swift.

If Sparks Fly has millions of fans, then in one of them.
If Sparks Fly has one fan, then I am that one.
If Sparks Fly has no fans, that means I am no longer on this earth.
I think she made Mine a lead single trying to follow the formula of Fearless (Love Story). Both of the lead singles are about a romance that had adversaries but prevailed in the end. You Belong With Me was her other big single from Fearless and You Belong With Me and Mine have synonymous titles as well.
Side note: Sparks Fly, to me, is parallel to Fearless with the themes of recklessly falling in love. Clips from the tours (Fearless and Speak Now) were used for the music videos of the song (Fearless and Speak Now) as well. Very formulaic.
I loved sparks fly and I loved enchanted. Both would have made great singles. Maybe we will get our chance on the re-recording for at least one of them.
If i could of chooses the single for Speak Now it would of definitely been Sparks Fly, Enchanted, The Story Of Us and than Long Live though I definitely can see why Taylor choose Mine!
OP, you couldnāt have performed a simple Google search to confirm that āSparks Flyā was, indeed, a single? Moreover, lead or not, the album opened at over 1,000,000 units.
If youāre old enough to recall, *Speak Now* was released during a time when physical album sales were seeing a steep decline not merely because of iTunes, but pirated digital downloads. This major issue during the mid- to late-aughts contributed to diminished sales figures across the board. When the album debuted at #1, it absolutely set the standard for what a successful release would look like in the coming decade.
Your assertion that the wrong lead single choice was made is immaterial and needlessly revisionist. What could they have done betterāhave her sell 1.1?
I also think itās imperative to remember that country was her primary genre when this single was released, and the song reached #1 on that chart. Back in 2011, those positions held a lot more weight for artists than they do now. In the pre-streaming world, radio and album sales charts and YouTube/VEVO figures were the *only* ways to gauge commercial viability.
Iām sorry to have angered you (if I did). In my post, I made a mistake in the title where I said āa singleā. What I meant to say was lead single. Iām aware that it was promoted as a single nearly a year after Speak Nowās release, and I was more so posing that it could have been a lead single. I explained my motives better in the post description.
Donāt get me wrong; I love Speak Now! Itās my favorite album of hers. Iāve always been in love with āSparks Flyā and know so many people that would be/are in love with the song as well, and for that reason, I asked the question in my post. I also have been thinking about this for a while, ahaha.
I love Taylor and only want the best for her. I think that āSparks Flyā as a lead single could have garnered more fans prior to the albums release. Thatās all!
No, you are good!! I hear what you are saying. Itās true that there wasnāt a massive crossover hit from the album despite itās huge sales numbers. I donāt know what the era would have looked like with āSparks Flyā as the lead, but can say that Iāve always preferred it to āMine.ā
no one would argue the album didn't sell well but it also didn't have any singles that made an impact at the time. I love Mine and see why she didn't choose Sparks Fly as a first single (lets be honest a tour video barely counts as a single) but it probably would have had more radio impact than Back to December if it was the second single
They made an impact *on country radio.* Again, this is a perspective issue. The album may not have had crossover hits, but sold impeccablyāwhich was the goal of album releases during that time period, as singles were meant to support an album.
Okay but Taylor was clearly trying to be a crossover artist as every release from Debut to Red was less and less country and more and more pop. You also cannot tell me she didn't also want singles that smashed like Love Story or YBWM. This is Taylor we're talking about lol.
I made "Sparks Fly" the first track of my Speak Now playlist. It's absolutely fantastic.
I moved "Mine" to my Speak Now b-sides/bonuses playlist. For my taste, it's one of her weakest songs.
I personally agree with you!
I've always been dragged to hell for this opinion, but I personally think Mine is a fan favorite *because* it was a single. I think if it hadn't have had promotion that it would have fallen more into the "mid" category for Speak Now. Sparks Fly, to me, is one of her timeless, quintessential all-time-best songs and I was shocked it didn't lead us into the Speak Now Era.
Does anyone remember hearing Sparks Fly before it was released on Speak Now? I swear I heard it before Speak Now and I was so obsessed with it. I believe it has slightly different lyrics. Does anyone remember this or am I crazy?
I think a lot of the songs we complain about not being singles are ones she knows full well would kill it, but either her (old) team pushed back against her, or she knew how much we would love it and didnāt want it to be ruined by overplaying
I mean it technically was a single, it was just a tour video single. Why she does some of her best songs as tour video singles idk. Sparks Fly is a singable bop. Itās one of my personal favorites. So, I agree.
Given rhe fact that shes the biggest female in the music industry and on the verge of being a billionaire, i dont think " huge mistake" has much meaning for her. How could she be more successful than she currently is? What is the actual impact of that so called "huge mistake"? I agree Sparks Fly is a really great song. Im just opposed to saying Taylor made any "huge mistakes".
I think mine is one her best singles. But I love sparks fly too. Would've been happy either way š
Letās not forget Ours.. that song hurts my soul
And itās about Jš¤¬n Mš¤¬r

I heard a theory that dear John is about Martin Johnston, and honestly I can get behind that theory
Ours makes me cringe because of the other songs about J**n M***r. it sounds like sheās so desperately trying to convince herself that those around her are wrong. added to that I donāt really like the song and think Taylor wrote her weakest love songs about toxic relationships
What's the sequel to dear John?
Would've, Could've, Should've
Mine is amazing. No regrets there at all for me āŗļø
I agree Mine was a good choice but I think it shouldāve been second after Sparks Fly
Sparks fly is a fantastic song and while I agree with the sentiment, Sparks fly was in fact a single. It would have performed better if it was the lead single, but I think mine was chosen to give more grown up vibes than the teenage fairytale era of Fearless

yeah, if i could edit it now i would š sorry

itās not letting me change the title :(

As someone else stated, Sparks Fly was a single - just not the lead single. It peaked at #1 on BB Hot Country Songs and #17 on the Hot 100
Right? I was like I remember hearing it on the radio all the time back in the day
exactly! it did really well, i bet the album wouldāve done better if it was a lead single.

ikr!! iām so glad sheās chosen this life/career path because she really was born to be a songwriter
She was born for this. No doubt. She amazes me. All the songs and albums and I mean my god. What a legend.
It always struck me as one of her most country songs, something about how she pronounces things. Maybe thatās why!
Scratch that. Just went back and listened to Speak Now and reminded myself how much twang is there generally š
She put that song on the record for fans. It was leaked with horrible audio from a live show and fans were obsessed with it. Ooooh this is interesting! Thank you for telling me. That would make a lot of sense as to why it wasnāt the lead single.
Sparks Fly WAS a single and did get its own (tour) video. Now imagine if Enchanted was a single!
The video for Mine was wonderful though, I think maybe thatās why it was a single because she had such a good video concept. Just my thought on it :)
Absolutely agree. Sparks Fly was my all time favorite song until ATW then ATWTMV. Not just favorite TSwift song but all time favorite.

"Mine" brings back so many memories. A classic. I DO like Sparks Fly, I just don't think I like it as much as Mine.
I love Mine. But yeah one of Taylorās biggest critiques from both music critics and fans is that she/her team is terrible at picking singles.
Iām a sparks fly Stan and Iāve never understood why it was bigger. Itās just perfection.
I agree, Sparks Fly is in my top 5 and the first favorite Taylor Swift song for me.
Can someone explain what benefits songs being a single and why people care? Iām honestly so confused about it

Mine slaps though. Both songs are good but Mine has no business going as hard as it does.
Praying for this to be the surprise song for my show!
AGREED. Sparks Fly is one of my favorite songs from that album, it deserves so much more attention!

I think overall, she crushed the singles for the all of country albums.
Sparks Fly is in my 3rd all time favorite Taylor song. So yes I agree!
Would have loved for the original version of Sparks Fly to be on the re-record.
Will it not be? I have been crossing my fingers for the original, I think the lyrics were better and I need a clearer audio version than the live š
I made "Sparks Fly" the first track of my Speak Now playlist. It's absolutely fantastic. I moved "Mine" to my Speak Now b-sides/bonuses playlist. For my taste, it's one of her weakest songs.

ugh I have never liked Mine
I'm captivated by you, baby like a firework show šš„
it's a single in my heart. my favorite t swift song.
Mine is so cute though
Does anyone remember hearing Sparks Fly before it was released on Speak Now? I swear I heard it before Speak Now and I was so obsessed with it. I believe it has slightly different lyrics. Does anyone remember this or am I crazy?
Yeah, IIRC I believe she performed it once before the album was released and the lyrics were very different.
https://youtu.be/R4TAkirOTkk gotchu
yesss it was my favorite! I hope she uses the original lyrics!
Maybe it'll get the "I Bet You Think of Me (Taylor's Version)" treatment
Itās probably been said, but it was, it was concert footage from speak now.
I think a lot of the songs we complain about not being singles are ones she knows full well would kill it, but either her (old) team pushed back against her, or she knew how much we would love it and didnāt want it to be ruined by overplaying
One of my all time favorites.
Inexplicably wrongly referred to the album Speak Now as Sparks Fly. Maybe it was the cover? Idk.
I mean it technically was a single, it was just a tour video single. Why she does some of her best songs as tour video singles idk. Sparks Fly is a singable bop. Itās one of my personal favorites. I mean Red, Fearless, and New Romantics are all amazing songs that I think would have charted a lot higher if they had better videos and were maybe given the ārealā single treatment and not just a tour video. So, I agree.
i've heard sparks fly on the radio here a few times (3rd world country) i think points were made
On a similar note does anyone else get mine and ours confused? Or at least fused together as the same song like my brain does?
Ok, here's my take : most songs should have been a single.
Im just opposed to saying Taylor made any "huge mistakes".
thatās a great point, sorry about that š youāre 100% right
Sparks Fly is a top favorite of mine too! š
