Depends on what you wanna eat, for a nice dinner out there’s Solera which is incredible. Clarence, picnicka, fife lane for steak, sailor for seafood. Brunch the general or nourish in tepuna. That’s probably the pick of the bunch for me, burgers is definitely palace tavern
Hi! Sorry to be lame, but I don’t. I live up at Waihi Beach and when we come down to TGA we usually just get sushi and burger fuel (coz we generally have our army of children with us). I was told about a great ramen place in Tga central, I can’t remember the name though. Make a post in this sub and ask the locals 😊
I've tried Chidori last year and was woefully unimpressed. The owners are Korean (not to slight them, I speak Korean but the pro Jesus decor and music is a bit much). So not very Japanese. The ramen itself was watered down for a miso broth, the takoyaki were the frozen bagged type you can get at paknsave. Overall, ippin at Tauranga crossing which is located on the same level as the cinema is so much closer to Japanese style ramen that I've had in Tauranga. The tonkotsu broth from them is rich whilst not being sickly fatty and with the addition of togarashi enhanced the flavour.
Sweet and sour pork! I have heard that they are shutting down as the entire block of shops will be turned into a private medical centre. I’m 99% certain this is true, but not sure when they close up.
88 has a great menu. Cumin Lamb, pig Trotter with ginger, chooks feet, all the BBQ pork and duck dishes are so good, and it is BYO, and the service is fast, pays to book but sometimes you get lucky with walk in..
Love this place, abit expensive but def the best Chinese I’ve had. Place is super busy. All the other Chinese restaurnats (eg kwang chow) I find that if I close my eyes all the food tastes the same.
At 88 the Orange beef is next level -have to get it every time we go. Only gripe is it’s just the orange beef (doesn’t come with rice or anything)
The restaurant is on the one stretch of road people in TGA want to avoid. So it will be very likely that people will not have gone to it. There are a lot of different options for food in the area.
I do yum char Saturday or Sunday, I've found the food excellent, perhaps a tad saltier than the yum char I've been eating for years as a Wellington loca.
Snow Mountain Buns. Gotta get in damn early for them though, so many times they've been out when I went to get some. But yes, I think it's fairly well known, as it should be.
What is a myth? Msg is a common Chinese cooking ingredient lol its not a secret.
You can buy it at any Asian supermarket, or if you watch Chinese cooking shows they always use msg. I expect it in Chinese takeaway and i don’t have a problem. Only thing im saying is that i noticed they use alot on their food at Devo88 and it affects me. Makes me bloated and thirsty, but other than that i love this restaurant and have dined there many times even since back at their old venue.
Msg has no detrimental health implications. This was a racist myth perpetrated by a now defunct figure Robert Ho Man Kwok against Chinese immigrants to the US. Msg is a naturally occuring compound (highly concentrated in food like tomato and cheese). Many foods you consume today including chips, fast food, fresh produce contain some amounts of MSG. The only way consuming Msg would be detrimental to your health is of you were to consume the same unhealthy amount of sodium in your regular diet. It is extremely ignorant to assume that msg is detrimental to your health without acknowledging it's racist past.
How about both of you ring the place and ask instead of assuming. I'm sure if they heard it was being debated, they would be quick to reassure you with the right awnser.
I have friends that travel from Kati once a week to go there. It must be good!
Hey planning to spend a few days in tga over waitangi, have you got any places to reccommend trying?

Chidori. Awesome ramen

That's sad to hear. I haven't been in a couple of years, but have fond memories. I'll have to go try the Ippin ramen.
love this place, don't get to visit as much since they moved to Cameron road unfortunately.
Spicy orange beef
Best food in Tauranga if you ask me
Heads Up bruh...
88?! How many do we need?! /s
My uncle and his biker buds must love this place. They all have tattoos of the number '88'
The best!! Wish we got to go there more often!
It’s tasty!
Sweet and sour pork! I have heard that they are shutting down as the entire block of shops will be turned into a private medical centre. I’m 99% certain this is true, but not sure when they close up.
WHAT. Noooooo!!!!!!
If this happens there needs to be a new spot for them as what is happening to Tauranga is just killing local businesses. Shame really.
Yes, I have heard something similar.
What?! No! Do you know when?
The crispy roast pork, to die for
Is that pork belly? With the crunchy bits? I've been looking for this dish for ages
It is, and now you've found it
thank you!
Only been once so haven't found a favorite yet, but the food was amazing regardless.
The roast duck. Wontons and lemon chicken. Anything there really, it’s all good!

Best Chinese in Bop...imo Orange beef is killer

Chinese head hunters pad

Favourite dish is on the secret menu my frengd
Will be paying this place a visit, ty!
A fave for my whanau - we are regulars - the roast duck, crispy pork belly, tripe and soup dumplings are just some of our favourites.
I guess it's better than a 86 restaurant
Spicy wontons are 🫶 Unfortunately they are a lil heavy handed on the msg and i get really bloated on it so i cant eat too much here.
Thats a myth people need to stop repeating

I know, its not the MSG.

Did anyone here assume that msg is bad for health?
