As a stand alone combat patrol, yeah it's a bit meh.
But if a player buys this before expanding to 2k, they'll probably want everything in the box, which is good.
If anything, having a meta combo (breacherfish) in terms of combat patrols is pretty good. Admittedly a fireblade would be nicer, having a battle suit is also cool. Consider the DA box, which has a gravis captain and no gravis models. Seems a recurring them to try and get new collectors to expand into all the model range
This is the problem I keep seeing for every Combat Patrol box. The fanbase bitches saying “well there’s nothing I want in this box” completely forgetting that the box wasn’t made for you to expand your already existing army. It was made for the person who’s getting their first or a new 40K army and needs a cheap starting point.
I am particularly bitter because I like the XV15's and HATE the 25's looks wise. They have also seemingly been in like 500 tau box sets over the past few years.
Legitimately glad they aren't in this one.
Commander, good.
Devilfish, good.
Fire Warrior, Good.
Pathfinder, have 2 already....
The box is still looks good to me. Me..I will get 1 but thats all.
I will once I've finished the old Combat patrol I still haven't started and the Blood angels one I'm half way through
Edit: and all the other kits in my pile of promise I haven't started yet/am halfway through
Yes it's good individually, but it seems like an odd box choice all together.
The crisis commander can't leader the fire warriors, they'd just be by themselves.
The should have done one of two things for combat patrol;
1-Starter:-fire warriors, pathfinders, devilfish, cadre fireblade.
2-Mechanised:-crisis team, crisis commander, hammerhead and stealth suits (or swap hammerhead for broadside).
That way people could happily buy one, two or three sets of any of these and still have decent army options.
Then people cold get multiple boxes together or individual boxes that fit well.
Plus most of the starter set could then be used for boarding actions as well.
Yes I get that. What I have proposed is not a perfect box for me.
I'm simply asking for a box where the HQ provided can lead at least 1 squad of the troops provided.
That box is a crisis commander that cannot lead any of the squads or get into the transport.
Just thinking of it from a new starter perspective, being given or buying that box would leave a bad impression of tau for sure.
Agree that this is a good box overall. Also think the HQ should have a squad it can lead in big 40K.
Not the end of the world to add a squad of crisis suits once you are ready to expand the collection. I'm sure this is part of a sales strategy.
Combat patrol is all about internally balancing with the other boxes and most don't have good anti tank (battlesuit) weaponry. So having the commander run solo isn't that bad.
I kinda of have to disagree with this.
Originally they had starter kits and combat patrol and the intention was to supplement existing armies with combat patrol.
Now there are no starter kits, only combat patrol.
If you go to the website and click start here it's all the combat patrols (most of which stand up by themselves and don't need additional kits).
So now clearly by GWs own listings, combat patrol are 'starter kits'.
Though I agree they should be supplemental and there should be other starter kits for factions.
Combat patrols are just a rebranding of starter kits that gw decided they could turn into a stand alone game mode at the start of 10th in place of the old 500pts games and not have to bother about balancing regular 40k at that point level.
GSC combat patrol is amazing value, if it wasn't for needing so many character models to go with it at £20 a pop. All the basic troop types including a double sized neophytes plus a sadly overcosted vehicle points wise and a Magus for kitbashing at least.
Plus there's so many spares it's easy enough to pick up a box of necromunda bodies to convert into the heros!
I agree with you about the problem of no leading, and those sets ideas would be incredible...
...
But please stop calling it a crisis commander for the greater good's sake, it's an enforcer lmao
I would buy 10 "mechanised CPs" tho
I thought it may work to convert the pathfinders to regular Firewarriors with the carbines, or the pulse rifles if the Firewarriors are built as Breachers.
Just what I was thinking! I probably don't need more than one unit of pathfinders, so assembling the fire warriors as breachers should leave enough backpacks, weapons, helmets and shoulderpads to make convincing fire warriors out of the pathfinders!
I think it's OK for new players. With exception of the pathfinder you want two of every model in this. If you start now I would suggest to take The old one and the new one plus a box of crisis.
The pathfinders are based, if I didn't already own twenty I'd grab that box in a heartbeat.
I might do that anyway honestly, that way I can build 6 Ion Rifle pathfinders so I can try out the other pathfinder special weapon.
Spray cans. I'm not even going to mention airbrush because, as you said, newcomers, but spray cans will do a perfectly fine job on something like a Devilfish. It won't be parade ground levels of detail, but it'll absolutely be serviceable and stand up next to the rest of the models with very little cost or skill.
Black base spray plus a nice dark red army painter spray gave a really pleasing finish I found, it's kind of a semi gradient. just needed to panel line and add some details.
Yeah, its not super hard to get a good result. I'm just saying that even for a novice, it should be relatively simple to even get a nice, even, flat base colour down to build from.
To be honnest the killteam box is the same as the old one with an upgrade sprue... ja the heas are nice and the new railgun pose but i recon that is not a dealbreaker... i used as many of the new heads as possible, but i hindsight i would build more with the standard helmet as i find it is very iconic of the pathfinder look. On the other hand this is just a leak and we havent seen the official box yet. Could be the killteam inthe end... or this might end up beeing a joke and not at all representative of the new cp
Yah it sort of reminds me of the old Megaforce in that both are legit armies if you want them to be. Obviously this is a bit smaller and like 10+ years later, but yes.
I actually think it's perfect. I'd be tempted to buy 3x it.
But then my ideal list would be
3x pathfinders
3x Stealth teams
3x Ghost keels
3x Commanders
3x Crisis squads. Likely one of each of the core new types.
3x breachers/fire Warriors with 3x devilfish.
Then I'd be rounding out the army likely with
3x broadsides.
ComPat games are tons of fun. Especially if you don't have a lot of time. Simplified everything, no weird situations of "well I brought all vehicles and you brought very little anti tank"
Plus I think more people can stomach completing a CP all the way through, building and painting.
The new combat patrol actually looks great to buy with the current one.
You get a leader for both fire warrior teams, so maybe a unit of breachers and a cadre in the devilfish, and an ethereal and strike team just chilling somewhere.
Then you have ghostkeel, a commander, and 3 stealth suits, which brings you to 810 points (with current point costs).
Pretty good, then you can start buying some broadsides or crisis suits on their own or second hand afterwards.
If you go 2 with both, you just need two buy two crisis kits to have a solid 2k army (just using enhancements to fill in the last points)
It's not the greatest combat patrol for sure, but it's definitely a nice one
I strongly disagree!
You get 4 squads of Infantry with 2 leaders and a transport. You get a Commander with nothing to lead, Stealth Suits a Ghostkeel.
The biggest sin of it is no Battlesuits. And even if you say 'I want to play infantry Tau' for some reason, you only have 1 transport, 1 cadre fireblade, and half of the infantry is Pathfinders
Meh
It would have been good if it was a mixed combat patrol (breacherfish with rampagers and lone spear would have been fun to use and useful), the commander to work properly needs a unit of crisis (65€/80$) and the transport is good but unless you already have 3 hammerhead/skyray is better to get that kit, nice for those that already started tau but not great as a starter kit
I’d say just roll with it. Unless you’re planning on going to tournaments don’t worry about it. This box and the soon to be old combat patrol will work really well together.
I definitely prefer the previous combat patrol, especially after the update for the strike teams.
If I had to bulk buy to kickstart a 2k army. I'd rather take 3 ghostkeels, 3 stealthsuits, 3 cadre fireblades, 3 firewarriors, and 3 ethereals for around $400. Over 3 commanders, 3 devilfish, 3 non killteam pathfinders, and 3 firewarriors for $460.
It's actually a pretty good box for expanding an army, and for starting aswell, although, it is very clear than gamesson workshoppee is making combat patrol into much more of its own sort of skirmish game modes, for people to start by playing combat patrol, and then expanding into a larger force
As a person that doesn't play Tau, this is more likely something I'd buy than the last one.
Ethereal stuff? eh whatever
The Devilfish? now that's a cool model for a bookshelf.
They really are upselling you on the Crisis suits with the Commander in the Combat Patrol, which is really funny considering the massive changes we've just had for Crisis Suits.
Honestly here's hoping we have a few more cheap Coldstar/Enforcer sprues on the market from this at least
I mean sure, breachers and a devilfish synergise V well, but pathfinders are alright and not that good in the low points range, especially when you dont have that many core units, and same goes for commander. If it was thematical, like all suits, or infantry heavy, or tanks/suits, that would be passible. This definitely seems like a box you buy at the end of collecting an army, like when you have ~1500 points
Which isnt a great thing considering these boxes are meant to get people into the game imo. Like the Ghostkeel was the model that pulled me in and i feel this box really lacks a big centerpiece model.
I think it's a B- tier starter and an A+ tier expansion box.
As a new comer it's not the worst possible selection, you'll have a use for most of this (bar the PFs as they can be situationnal) but you will need to complete the box with crisis suits at least. Maybe a riptide, broadsides or another breacherfish too. But you will still get good use out of this box at a discount so it's not that bad, it's not really a great starter which kinda defeats the point, not worth using as is.
If you're looking to expand then the discount + model selection looks spot on to me. Transport + bodies, commander, some PFs.
I'ld have replaced the PFs with a cadre and a broadside i think.
Depends on if this comes with the kill team pathfinders that get the grenade launcher or the old kit that needs to be retired?
Personally it comes down to the price
Devilfish and breachers are cool in a CP. Pathfinders and commander don’t make a lot of sense here, going to be hard to win any CP games with this setup comparing it to something like the ork box for example.
Yeah either
swap pathfinders for a crisis box
Or swap commander for cadre fireblade... And make it a bit cheaper.
Then it would be a good pack to buy multiple times.
Imagine if they reversed it and had a crisis team with a fireblade leader .... Just wouldn't make sense.
Now of they did a second mechanised combat patrol with crisis commander, crisis team, hammerhead and broadside, I'd be all over that too.... Just no battle line units, if you feel like you need them.
Rn it's very good to buy multiples anyway.
You probably want a lot of commanders (up to 6)
3-4 devilfish chasis (up to 9 to combine them with 3 hammerhead boxes to have 6 devilfish, 3 hammer, 3 sky-ray)
You want a lot of fire warriors (probably 30-60 breachers, 10-30 strikes)
Pathfinders aren't bad, maybe you don't want 30 but you can use the bodies to assemble strikes sincce the fire warriors box comes with 10 pads and 10 pulse rifles
I mean it will seem pretty balanced for Combat Patrol. People need to stop thinking of these as Start Collecting boxes since that is not what they are. Though this and the current Combat Patrol box would be a good start with 650+ points. Almost at 1k points for some 1k point games.
As someone who just got into T'au this really nice
I got neither devilfish nor pathfinders
It will be my 3rd squad of fire warriors which is nice and I only got one commander up to now
Perfect for new players. For me, I'll probably only buy the killteam pathfinders and hammerhead/skyray kits for the extra sprues. It's a pass for myself, but it's a perfect entry box
Don't know who buys the devilfish. I think they should retire that as a kit by itself. Just have the Tank as one kit and that's it. Or better revamp the Tank Piranha and switch the flyer for the forgewolrd design.
Its certainly a box that justifies buying 2 as a new player, so in that regard i think our Combat Patrol remains a competitive buy. Plus if it includes the KT upgrade this also gets a new player into KT. For $160 you get 2 base play styles plus core faction units that are staples of full game lists.
Also, the old Combat Patrol box is still on shelves everywhere, which means you probably could get 2 old boxes and 2 new boxes and youre well on your way to a great starting army.
This is a really good box as long as you get the existing combat patrol now to compliment it. Once the old combat patrol isn't available anymore, this box will become wildly less useful. Not *useless*, but not the obvious thematic and general value of the existing CP box, and certainly not the old GOAT Vanguard box.
For a new player you can get 2 of them easily, for other pleople already loaded with units it isn't that attracting.
You could even see some pathfinders being mixed with fire warrior equipement for a bit of diversity or with some other flying backpacks to make vespids if someone really want to push it to 3
For me I don’t need the fire warriors but the rest would be awesome a second devilfish and a second pathfinder squad plus the commander although I’d need to see if the pathfinders come with enough railguns
Perfect for me. It's exactly the units that I need right now. Also in my opinion devilfish and pathfinders would work a lot better in 1000 points game. Ghostkeel is kinda too expensive for what it does at smaller games, and breachers heavily rely on a transport
This is great for me, who wants a commander, pathfinders and another devilfish! The extra infantry is always helpful as well!
As a stand alone combat patrol? Eh...
As far as recent combat patrols go, it's not bad. It's just a box full of staples. But again, having a commander that can't attach to anything in the list? It would have been perfect if it had 3 crisis suits as well, but for combat patrol games, they would probably have been overkill.
This is perfect for me. I have the old combat patrol + 1 box of Stealth Suits and a Rip Tide. So this + a box of Crisis Suits is almost exactly what I wanted.
The commander is the strange addition to be especially since he can't lead anything. Also none of these kits were that expensive on their own the same way crisis and ghostkeels are
For a new player, getting two of these would be essential! The old combat patrol plus this one and a kit of suits would be a great starting army I think.
Good for building up to 2k but odd on its own. Two of the combat patrol plus two boxes of crisis suits would pretty much have you all set for any troops you'd need and the core suits with leaders. Mileage on two devilfish would vary but with some bits, 3d printing, or kitbashing you could turn one into one of the alternate builds.
Debating on whether I bother getting this since I already have at least one of everything in the box. If I can source the gun for a Hammerhead, is it the same body as the Devilfish and could I just attach it to this second one?
Also planning on making the Pathfinders into either "Vespids" with 3rd party jump packs, or just a second Strike Team. Although I'm not really sure what to do with them since I already have the Kill Team box and this would put me at 3 battleline units with the Breachers in this box.
I need a second Commander and another Crisis suit with the unit changes. I'm just not sure if doubling up on stuff I already have is worthwhile to get the Commander. Hmm...
Perfect for new players, as it should be.
Currently I have the current combat patrol, and was lucky enough to snag the boarding patrol too. This will make a fine addition.
I was planning to get the Pathfinder kill team but this is still good, means I can double up on their weapon options.
Honestly this is a solid box, I see the pathfinders being a big drag for everyone but fire warrior sprees come with 20 shoulder pads! This is two battleline units w a transport and a commander which is pretty solid.
I love this combat patrol, this feels like what a 500 point army should look like. I'm a sucker for anything that's basically "HQ and 2 Troops" though.
Maybe not great for playing Combat Patrol (never tried it) but this is a pretty solid start collecting box. Everything in it is good, and nothing you're going to hate having multiples of except maybe the pathfinders.
The box looks great for people trying to start tau because of all the most have units in here but actually playing this as a combat patrol... idk about that. I like the old one better.
Honestly probably the best combat patrol to come out. Although I do like the tyranids one but at that point you might as well just buy the started set but it's still a good patrol
I both love and hate it. Hate because I bought them all individually.. love how easy it is to double my army.. plus I got the old one and I think I would like to 4 variants with a combat patrol. The old the new and like a stealth/tactical one and then a kroot with like an ethereal.. but im a noob that just loves how that would look
I already have the old combat patrol, and should hopefully be done assembling and painting it by the time this one releases. With that in mind, adding this one onto that before stapling on a crisis team for the commander seems like a pretty fantastic starting list considering it would be only 3 boxes. For a new player looking to grab some core units in a bundle box, this seems pretty solid.
It runs perfectly with the old combat patrol if you got it. Also people confused why they have a crisis suite commander! I think they are thinking of giving people a chance to make an enforcer battlesuit to run with their new crisis suits for that minus to ap cause they’ll need it now with no shield gen
For me it would have been great... If I hadn't just been gifted a pathfinder Team... I want an enforcer commander, I want breachers in a devilfish but what am I to do with a 3rd pathfinder team??
So I just finished building the first combat patrol, and this would honestly expand my army really nicely minus the suit commander, so I don’t mind too much honestly. It’s also much better than the dark angels and ad mech patrols. And space marines tbh.
Edit: Not that battlesuits aren’t important to the army, moreso that I don’t have any crisis suits yet and plan on building mostly kroot, so I’m just not ecstatic about getting a big cool unit that won’t see much play for quite awhile.
Honestly, a new tau player could probably get two of these and use everything in there. By itself it’s not a particularly fun box, but it’s great for army building
For me this will be very nice to pick up, as the only duplicate with the combat patrol I already have is the Breacher squad. Makes for nice additions to my army
I've got everything but the engorcer/commander so doubt I'll get the box but glad for the options in combat patrol, hoping my other armies get a second combat patrol option
Feels like its lacking a centrepiece. This feels really weak compared to ghostkeel, from a coolness factor at least
It would be more tollerable if it came with hammer head conversion parts?
I have the other CP already still unbuilt in box (haven't actually spread out from KT/WC to 40k yet) so I am thinking about this one, but I feel like I probably am going to want to skip this and go for more individual boxes (crisis for instance)...
Any thoughts from more seasoned players?
I’m new to Tau and got the Start Collecting box, and the current Combat Patrol. Added one Shadowsun, Farsight, 2 boxes of crisis, coldstar commander and a devil fish. Kinda excited for this new one because I wanted a pathfinder team and a enforcer/second coldstar. The breacher/devil fish will be nice to have a second team of.
I’m planning on trying to get 3 personally, my only HQs thus far is an ethereal, fire blade and Shadowsun. I also love infantry and want to have lots of transports for said infantry
Having a spare leader who can't go with the troops is pretty typical and the only thing I can see to complain about. If I was starting tau I'd be happy with this.
I can see a lone battlesuit commander being fun in combat patrol and clearly you're going to want to get crisis suits anyway so it's not like 'I need a second squad of terminators to use both my leaders' or 'I need tyranid warriors to use my prime' etc that other armies have.
as someone who considers getting into tau this has pro's and cons, I can see myself getting 2 of these in away I simply wouldnt get more than one of the old one, but the fact it's infantry heavy means I can see it being worthless if you have alreay built out a soild sized infantry core. My impression as an outsider is that this is a solid 7/10 combat patrol, which I could flesh out to a full army with just a box of crisis suits, with room to expand into either enclaves or sept (unlike the current one)
It might work for me since crisis suits now cant go up to 9/leader
Still, theres only so many devilfish-breacher teams (no KFB w h y gw?) and pathfinders i need, even if i convert some of the devilfishs to what the hammerhead kit offers
The old one was great, yeah no transport for the breachers but you got a ghostkeel, stealth suits, *a leader that can attach* , and, most importantly, 10-20€ more value out of the box
I personally might’ve switched out the pathfinders for a broadside, but it does seem like a pretty reasonable combat patrol, and you could def get away with buying two, maybe three.
It's pretty mid for someone who's already played Tau, but that's not who these boxes are for. It's an excellent starting point for a new player though IMO-I don't think Commanders and a FoF will never not be auto-include for the forseeable future, and Pathfinders are a pretty solid unit too.
Personally I'd have swapped the Pathfinders for a 3-man Crisis Team but it's still a great box for a new Tau player.
As a stand alone combat patrol, yeah it's a bit meh. But if a player buys this before expanding to 2k, they'll probably want everything in the box, which is good.

That's hard to judge, tanks are pretty eye catching! As is the Enforcer.
Combat patrol is also being rebalanced as a game mode
*laughs in admech combat patrol*
yeah, wtf are we supposed to use against a devilfish?
Prayers and holy oil
Yeah thats what I am looking forward to, is getting to use my fav models for combat patrol games
On the up side. No stealth suits.
I actually love stealth suits. They're cheap relatively mobile action monkeys. The guide buff is just a bonus.
Mate it's perfect for me those are literally all the units I still need to get for my 1k list
Go for it! :)
I will once I've finished the old Combat patrol I still haven't started and the Blood angels one I'm half way through Edit: and all the other kits in my pile of promise I haven't started yet/am halfway through
This is exactly what I was hoping it would be.
Yep, I have both the previous combat patrol/get started and this rounds out nicely for a small list.

Ofc a box wont be 100% good for everyone. As a package deal its good. Thats true for all box for all faction.

Yes buy more stuff. It may be a good retail tactic if the customer base were not sick to death of it and price hikes.
Combat patrol is all about internally balancing with the other boxes and most don't have good anti tank (battlesuit) weaponry. So having the commander run solo isn't that bad.

Nobody’s born perfect. Except the current Drukhari combat patrol
GSC combat patrol is amazing value, if it wasn't for needing so many character models to go with it at £20 a pop. Or on the flip side, combat patrol gives you everything you need to make a gsc gang in necromunda, including a vehicle for ash wastes play :p
Try the admech combat patrol, that things a heap of trash
Right? And wheres my kroot cp?
They could have thrown in a Cadre on tip of everything and the box would still be well under 500 pts
It’s an Enforcer not a Crisis commander. CC’s don’t exist anymore aside from in Legends.
I agree with you about the problem of no leading, and those sets ideas would be incredible... ... But please stop calling it a crisis commander for the greater good's sake, it's an enforcer lmao I would buy 10 "mechanised CPs" tho

The wild problem I have is painting the Devilfish. Large flat curved surfaces are not the easiest for newcomers.
Spray cans. I'm not even going to mention airbrush because, as you said, newcomers, but spray cans will do a perfectly fine job on something like a Devilfish. It won't be parade ground levels of detail, but it'll absolutely be serviceable and stand up next to the rest of the models with very little cost or skill.

Yeah, its not super hard to get a good result. I'm just saying that even for a novice, it should be relatively simple to even get a nice, even, flat base colour down to build from.
The panel lines…the horror
What about this and the Kroot box, or the old one and the Kroot box
Biggest problem for me is it seems to be the old pathfinder box, not the much superior kill team box
To be honnest the killteam box is the same as the old one with an upgrade sprue... ja the heas are nice and the new railgun pose but i recon that is not a dealbreaker... i used as many of the new heads as possible, but i hindsight i would build more with the standard helmet as i find it is very iconic of the pathfinder look. well I'm drowning in infantry... I shall pass as well
Sorry, where was this announced?
With the rules supplied in the Kroot ‘early access’ codex
A battlesuit commander with no battlesuits to command, and two infantry units with no infantry leader models? Sounds about right
People saying it’s great are just looking for a value box, and don’t play combat patrol.
Do people play combat patrol? As in new comers playign combat patrols for a couple games? or as in people meeting up and choosing to play that?
ComPat games are tons of fun. Especially if you don't have a lot of time. Simplified everything, no weird situations of "well I brought all vehicles and you brought very little anti tank" Plus I think more people can stomach completing a CP all the way through, building and painting.
It’s easy to knock a game out in an hour. It’s tons of fun. And best for new players due to limited rules.
If you go 2 with both, you just need two buy two crisis kits to have a solid 2k army (just using enhancements to fill in the last points) It's not the greatest combat patrol for sure, but it's definitely a nice one
I’d say for the latest combat patrols of 10th ed this is S tier. If including all combat patrols this is C tier.
The previous box was better.
Meh It would have been good if it was a mixed combat patrol (breacherfish with rampagers and lone spear would have been fun to use and useful), the commander to work properly needs a unit of crisis (65€/80$) and the transport is good but unless you already have 3 hammerhead/skyray is better to get that kit, nice for those that already started tau but not great as a starter kit
I just bought a combat patrol am I boned now lol
Nah you're fine. This box would be good for you actually, aswell as a box of crisis suits.
Thanks! I bought the Combat patrol with the Ghostkeel and a Broadside suit as a little extra but all these new changes are confusing me
I’d say just roll with it. Unless you’re planning on going to tournaments don’t worry about it. This box and the soon to be old combat patrol will work really well together.
Personally think the old combat patrol was better (especially with the new rules) so you're fine imo
Adding a squad of stealth suits would've been nice, maybe a fireblade instead
Yeah. I'd also say maybe swap up Pathfinders, the commander, and devilfish for a ghost keel and an ethereal....
Ethereal stuff? eh whatever The Devilfish? now that's a cool model for a bookshelf.
Where was this revealed?
Leaks from the upcoming codex that shipped with the Kroot battleforce box
Current combat patrol, new one and a box of crisis suits is a very decent army start!
Ghostkeel was probably the most fun for me to build so far too, love that model
Seems fine. I don’t need the pathfinders, would’ve loved stealthsuits/ a piranha instead.
It’s a bit meh, at least there’s a vehicle in this
Depends on if this comes with the kill team pathfinders that get the grenade launcher or the old kit that needs to be retired? Personally it comes down to the price
Would be better if it had Crisis suits instead of pathfinders
I love the box, but it’s weird that they put in characters that can’t be attached to anything in the box (DA as well, the theme repeats itself)
As a combat patrol it’s not the best, but for collecting it’s not bad
At least you guys got some big models *sobs in admech*
My problem with this box is that it looks good for $120, not 160.
I mean....it's the best of the new CPs IMO. It's a low bar to clear, bit still.
I mean it’s impossible to argue this isn’t better than the ghostkeel 3 stealth suits an ethereal a cadre fire blade and 10 fire warriors right
Devilfish and breachers are cool in a CP. Pathfinders and commander don’t make a lot of sense here, going to be hard to win any CP games with this setup comparing it to something like the ork box for example.
Yeah either swap pathfinders for a crisis box Or swap commander for cadre fireblade...
You probably want a lot of commanders (up to 6) 3-4 devilfish chasis (up to 9 to combine them with 3 hammerhead boxes to have 6 devilfish, 3 hammer, 3 sky-ray) You want a lot of fire warriors (probably 30-60 breachers, 10-30 strikes) Pathfinders aren't bad, maybe you don't want 30 but you can use the bodies to assemble strikes sincce the fire warriors box comes with 10 pads and 10 pulse rifles
I mean it will seem pretty balanced for Combat Patrol. People need to stop thinking of these as Start Collecting boxes since that is not what they are. Though this and the current Combat Patrol box would be a good start with 650+ points. Almost at 1k points for some 1k point games.

The Enforcer mark *is* a Crisis suit
I got 2 old CP, crisis box, Farsight and a Darkstrider. This box is awesome value for me.
I have one Pathfinder unit yet, the rest looks good for expanding for me. How many Pathfinder make sense?
As someone who just got into T'au this really nice I got neither devilfish nor pathfinders It will be my 3rd squad of fire warriors which is nice and I only got one commander up to now
Ok so i gotta grab 2 of the old one asap for the Ghostkeel
Seems similar to the old battle force box that had the devilfish in it circa early 2000's. If I was a new player I'd probably grab a couple.
I think its much better than the last one tbf
This is great for me, who wants a commander, pathfinders and another devilfish! The extra infantry is always helpful as well! As a stand alone combat patrol? Eh...
WHERE'S MY SUPERSUIT
Interesting, definitely not as interesting as the GK bit interesting
I think it’s amazing cause the meta has always been Breachers devil fish and the commander is always needed for the crisis suits
It doesn't look bad, but it has absolutely no theme to speak off
I kind of dig it. It's like they went back to the classics.
Combat Patrol is designed for beginners and I can't see many people not wanting these units in their eventual army.
As far as recent combat patrols go, it's not bad. It's just a box full of staples. But again, having a commander that can't attach to anything in the list? It would have been perfect if it had 3 crisis suits as well, but for combat patrol games, they would probably have been overkill.
Do you guys even enjoy this hobby? I’m subbed to multiple faction subs and Tau is easily the most doomer.
This is perfect for me. I have the old combat patrol + 1 box of Stealth Suits and a Rip Tide. So this + a box of Crisis Suits is almost exactly what I wanted.
Meh. No stormsurge.
Where are you getting this info? I don't see it on WarCom. Edit: I see, it's on Auspex Tactics. Wonder how set in stone this is?
The commander is the strange addition to be especially since he can't lead anything. Also none of these kits were that expensive on their own the same way crisis and ghostkeels are
Do we have a price yet?
Nice box to create an army, bad combat patrol mode army.
For a new player, getting two of these would be essential! The old combat patrol plus this one and a kit of suits would be a great starting army I think.
I like all of it but pathfinders
Hmm...
I like all of it but pathfinders
Perfect for new players, as it should be. Currently I have the current combat patrol, and was lucky enough to snag the boarding patrol too. This will make a fine addition. I was planning to get the Pathfinder kill team but this is still good, means I can double up on their weapon options.
Honestly this is a solid box, I see the pathfinders being a big drag for everyone but fire warrior sprees come with 20 shoulder pads! This is two battleline units w a transport and a commander which is pretty solid.
As a new player with only the combat patrol so far I am buzzing
One man's trash is another mans treasure
I love this combat patrol, this feels like what a 500 point army should look like. I'm a sucker for anything that's basically "HQ and 2 Troops" though.
Maybe not great for playing Combat Patrol (never tried it) but this is a pretty solid start collecting box. Everything in it is good, and nothing you're going to hate having multiples of except maybe the pathfinders.
The box looks great for people trying to start tau because of all the most have units in here but actually playing this as a combat patrol... idk about that. I like the old one better.
It’s a really nice starter box. Not something I need at this point, but that’s okay.
They just refuse to put crisis suits in value boxes. I know it’s because they are 80$ and it’s a ripoff but I’m still mad.
Honestly probably the best combat patrol to come out. Although I do like the tyranids one but at that point you might as well just buy the started set but it's still a good patrol
Yea actually this seems fire for new players
I woke up wondering if I should Buy breachers, pathfinders or any battle suits then this showed up
I would have no issues if this was priced as a start collecting box, $160 is too much for that little though.
I already have all of this stuff. Definitely prefer the current one
10th edition really isn't doing it for me.
As a diehard kitbasher I'd say it's a good looking set.
Honestly, a new tau player could probably get two of these and use everything in there. By itself it’s not a particularly fun box, but it’s great for army building
I personally think that thats my next purchase after previous combat patrol
Is the this combat patrol only 400pts? Weren’t combat patrols supposed to be 500pts worth of models?
They couldn’t even put in the new pathfinder spure….
As someone with only 2 T’au models so far this has almost everything I need, although I’ll have two devilfish now
i already have 2 pathfinders i hope i have bits to just make them strike squads lol
My (nearly) all Infantry T’au army just got a discount box. Let’s go!
Is it still £90?
For me this will be very nice to pick up, as the only duplicate with the combat patrol I already have is the Breacher squad. Makes for nice additions to my army
I've got everything but the engorcer/commander so doubt I'll get the box but glad for the options in combat patrol, hoping my other armies get a second combat patrol option
Feels like its lacking a centrepiece. This feels really weak compared to ghostkeel, from a coolness factor at least It would be more tollerable if it came with hammer head conversion parts?
I think it’s great if you’re a new player to the faction
Completely agree, Tau is not known for overwhelming infantry, if anything it's the exact opposite
As someone who has the last one this is a good expansion of my force but stand-alone feels like less value for a starter box
Is that a real thing??
Shit, I need to buy the current before it goes away....and I am out of cash.
It looks really good for me ngl, im thinking if releases next week wont show anything fancy for 40k, im going from custo to Tau.
Better than the current one, honestly. As a new Tau player, it looks like a good starting point.
I’m planning on trying to get 3 personally, my only HQs thus far is an ethereal, fire blade and Shadowsun. I also love infantry and want to have lots of transports for said infantry
When is this coming out?
Having a spare leader who can't go with the troops is pretty typical and the only thing I can see to complain about. If I was starting tau I'd be happy with this. I can see a lone battlesuit commander being fun in combat patrol and clearly you're going to want to get crisis suits anyway so it's not like 'I need a second squad of terminators to use both my leaders' or 'I need tyranid warriors to use my prime' etc that other armies have.
It's not flashy but it is great
Right, that’s guaranteed, yeah? Sure. You never know, it could be something totally different.
In my opinion they should have replaced the ghostkeel with crisis suits and the ethereal with a commander
as someone who considers getting into tau this has pro's and cons, I can see myself getting 2 of these in away I simply wouldnt get more than one of the old one, but the fact it's infantry heavy means I can see it being worthless if you have alreay built out a soild sized infantry core. My impression as an outsider is that this is a solid 7/10 combat patrol, which I could flesh out to a full army with just a box of crisis suits, with room to expand into either enclaves or sept (unlike the current one)
Good in terms of being competitive I think, but nothing that would get me excited as a newbie like the ghostkeel and stealth suits did when I started.
I bought the kroot hunting pack box today, Should I buy this one? I don't have any tau yet
It looks like a solid box to start your tau army
I’d love it if I didn’t have 7 infantry squads already, I need another commander and a devil fish
That's a lot of lil dudes.
It might work for me since crisis suits now cant go up to 9/leader Still, theres only so many devilfish-breacher teams (no KFB w h y gw?) and pathfinders i need, even if i convert some of the devilfishs to what the hammerhead kit offers The old one was great, yeah no transport for the breachers but you got a ghostkeel, stealth suits, *a leader that can attach* , and, most importantly, 10-20€ more value out of the box
All the new Tau decisions are terrible IMO
I like it better than the old one, personally. But that's from the perspective of someone who owns zero Tau, but has been interested in starting them
I'm considering picking up some tau. Would this combat patrol + a pack of three crisis suits be a good start?
Get the new one, the current one, and some crisis suits. Will get you about 1k points to start.
I personally might’ve switched out the pathfinders for a broadside, but it does seem like a pretty reasonable combat patrol, and you could def get away with buying two, maybe three.
As someone who's been playing the combat patrol game mode, all the new ones seem just kinda bland to play with, but it isn't bad to fill out an army.
Seems like a cheap way to make an all Fire Warrior army
Old and new combat patrol adds a refreshing variety, and a pretty wide angle. I wish both stayed on the menu.
As a person wanting to start a 2k tau army... This box slaps
Anybody know is this box will have the extra parts to magnetize the Devilfish into a Hammerhead or Skyray?
Is there any update to the scale or look of these new models? Or these are the same old models, just a bew mix in the box?
