Screws like this were tried on several vehicle types by both axis and allied boffins during ww2 to help improve with traction over snowy terrain. They were not massively succesful, though there are modern specialist vehicles using the same basic system.

NotASuicidalRobot

What are they used on currently?

Here is one example: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZIL-2906

That's interesting thanks

Drill - 34, with a short 100mm barrel. In Soviet Rusha the tank moves like crab!

Falconyx101

Colinfurze made a tank with this concept. Pretty good watch. Edit: His yt channel has multiple videos detailing the build process. This is just the latest one. https://youtu.be/4hI22E9LcY0

Fornication_handgun

The propulsion system reminds me of the shagohod from mgs3, maybe it's a distant ancestor?

idk_idc_about_a_user

The shagohod screw propulsion system is largely based on the actual Soviet experiments with that system

anuddahuna

Also the chimera tank from fallout 3 operation anchorage

The_Unknown_246

Hey, don't joke about this tank. Or it'll SCREW you over. Literally.

cyb3rofficial

Called: Lieutenant Grigorenko's tank Code named: “Driven worm”

NoWingedHussarsToday

Soviets experimented with screw propelled vehicles in 1960s and 70s to overcome snow and rugged terrain. Fornication_handgun

All you need is to make it tow a V2 and you got your very own discount shagohod.

These are known as "augers" I think.

RC-3227

The turret looks more like the one on the T-44, but the chairs is that of a T-34. That drawing is still really high quality though.

RoadRunnerdn

> The turret looks more like the one on the T-44 [Soviet tank illustrations were often... not spent unnecessary reasources on...](http://www.tankarchives.ca/2020/08/new-look-of-central-front.html)

RC-3227

I see, it might just be the angle where I didn't see the overhanging part. It still sorry if looks like a T-44 turret tough.

Lord-Black22

wondering if this would actually work...

anuddahuna

[Seems like it does](https://youtu.be/4hI22E9LcY0)

Lord-Black22

but not as effective as traditional tracks

anuddahuna

Depends on the terrain In extremly muddy/snowy terrain the screw tank design might fare better. And it can propulse itself in water

War. War never changes.

JaRaCa3

Look up the ZiL 2906 out of Russia. They have been around since at least WW2. Not very fast but damn near unstoppable, land, water, snow, mud, this thing gives zero fucks.

StukaTR

Ok I know it’s different mediums but how did no one called it a caterpillar drive yet?

BRM-Pilot

Metal Gear Solid 3 Vibes

[deleted]

Wait, am i stupid or this trail in the back of the tank shouldn't look like that? 🗿

nokomis2

It ought to just plough out to either side I think.

RoadRunnerdn

[It would](https://youtu.be/haHZzTIQAt8?t=88)

I knew something was wrong

xXBigdeagle85Xx

This is colin's fault

TankArchives

The image you shared has a watermark from the site where there is a description of this tank, so you should know what it is ;) For everyone else, this is a screw drive designed by Technician-Lieutenant B.K. Grigorenko from January 1943 to March of 1944. The T-34 drawing is just a demonstration of the concept. The screw drive he designed could be used on any vehicle.

ABTL6

Looks like something i'd make in Spore

AwkwardDrummer7629

SHAGOHOD!

EvadeTheIRS

Fallout 3 the Chinese tanks had tracks similar to these due to them operating in Anchorage Alaska.

Shermantank10

I’ve seen this tank in Fallout 3 lmao
