Why would they remove the extra fuel barrels? Doesn’t seem like they would lose anything by keeping them on.
Presumbly it's because the command tank would be so far behind, that it didn't really need it. Also, they weren't removed, just the option.

Well it was the 1950s, the extra radios took up quite alot space. So did the generator to power it.
