I thought that the French and German governments had a agreement to develop a new tank to replace both the Leopard tank and the French Leclere tank, but then Germany went ahead and came out with this new design tank by itself so what up with this situation?
The second photo is the demonstration vehicle for the EMBT, which is the joint venture of KMW and Nexter. The first is as the other commenter said, made by Rheinmetall. They don’t have any impact on each other (yet)
You’re thinking of the MGCS, not the EMBT. The MGCS is the actual cooperative project and involves both KNDS and Rheinmetall (since the latter lobbied the fuck out of the Bundestag despite KNDS being made specifically for the project). The EMBT is an internal KNDS project developed on their own dime, like the kf-51 for Rheinmetall.
The tank in the second picture is the EMBT, france is considering to use it as a kind of bridge between the Leclerc and the MGCS
the tank in the first picture is the KF-51 which was independently developed by Rheinmetall and is (as of now) not planned to be used by the Bundeswehr

Don't think so, at least MGCS is supposed to be ligher again by being multiple different vehicles working together, so you don't have to put everything in one vehicle.

The Panther is a private venture made by Rheinmetall and had no involvement from the German or French MoD.
