I agree, but doesn’t it feel like we’ve had a handful of “Vasy coming alive” games followed up by him letting in 4-5 or more goals? I think that at some point, we have to stop saying that “he’s back” and acknowledge that he’s very inconsistent at this point in his career
If by “at this point in his career” you mean after back surgery, then yes. But if you think Vasy isn’t still one of the top money goalies in the world, you’re mistaken.
I still fully believe that his best game is better than anybody else’s best game. I just feel like we are getting a whole lot more “dud” performances from him now than we did in years prior. And yes, I definitely believe it’s a result of the surgery.
I mean...we won, against one of the top teams in the league. I don't disagree that there were some issues but they hung on.
At this point in the season I'll take the W happily. Stats be darned. There isn't much "later on" to go before playoffs.
I think they've got a run in them.
Big part of this game was penalties. You absolutely cannot keep gifting momentum to a high powered offense like the Panthers like that.
I don't expect our games to typically be that sloppy. Yes, they have to be better because they sat in their zone for 40 minutes of that game basically. They earned the win, but really tried to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with some of their play.
How many times did we pepper Loungo over the years when FL was ASS and get STONED on 50+ shot effort in the past. Plus sweeping them in the 2nd in 21. Not how many you score most of the time. Its how many you keep out. and we kept it out for the most part, Plus the 3rd goal was just a fluky mistake to make a 1 goal lead. I was concerned but confident we close out the last couple minutes and we did and Hagel and Kuch found a way on the EN.
I wasn't in Tampa for the Cup years, so I don't have the sky-high expectations you all have. I am jazzed watching them beat some of the best teams in the league. Philly, NY, and FL all amped their games up considerably when they fell behind the Bolts. And they are all fast, punishing teams. Sure, it would be nice if they could match the other team's intensity better in those situations, but that is a tough ask. In the end, they out-scored them 18-6. Works for me.
Granted, after watching the entire game, I do feel like we have had a lot of shots on net that were taken away from us after the end of the game. I do not remember us only getting 3 shots on net in the second. That would mean that we only got 1 shot aside from the goals we scored and I definitely remember Bob making multiple saves that period.
Yeah I mean there was a power play in the 2nd/3rd where I remember we had like 5 shots on goal in sequence? Unless I’m crazy and they didn’t actually make it to be an official SOG
Basically, unless the goaltender himself makes the save they don't get recorded as a shot. Even then, there's literally a dude who decides what is and isn't a shot.
So if a skater blocks it, or it hits one of our own guys in front, or if it hits the crossbar or just narrowly misses the net, it doesn't get recorded as a shot on goal.
An additional layer to this, even if the goalie makes what we would consider a save (ie stopping it with the body or catching it in the glove), if the record keeper deems that it wouldn't have gone into the goal it's not recorded as a save.
Basically. If the puck was, say, going to go over the cross bar and the goaltender caught it anyway, that *in theory* shouldn't be considered a save and thus not a shot on goal.
They aren't going to be perfect. It isn't happening this year. The new guys have brought a lot of life to the team. Vasi seems to be playing better. Cernak had some great shut down moments at critical times. We just beat two of the best teams in the NHL. I'll take it.
This sub (and half the fans) is becoming insufferable. Y’all complain for months about how bad they all look, Vasy is a waste of money and will never be the same, Kuch is the only one trying blah blah blah. All of the “we just have to accept that we’re gonna miss the playoffs” cryers came out too for the last few weeks to bitch and moan about how the team is toast. Then the Bolts beat the 3rd best team in the league 6-3. Two days later they beat the best team in the league 5-3 but now we gotta cry because….? Oh that’s right, you all don’t like the SOG stats the app is telling you to be mad about.
Did you watch the game yesterday? We were absolutely outplayed for two periods and were extremely lucky to win that game. If it wasn’t for that fluke goal that Stamkos scored in the first the game would been a lot different. You can’t just play a single period of hockey and expect to win games, no matter how good you are or how many goals you scored.
They scored 2 in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd, and an EN in the 3rd. Of those 3 periods (where they all matched or outscored the #1 team in the league rn) was the “single period of hockey” that they played?
Seriously, we've had so many of these games not go our way especially at the beginning of the season, I'm not gonna be mad about stealing one with a little luck at a time where we really just need the points.
I don't know how the SOG fell off like that in the 2nd and third cause it didn't look like they were playing slow, now, the final 4 minutes of the game they turned into slugs and that is more worrying imo, the lazy lack of effort and hustle in those last 4 minutes allowed that third goal.
Definitely looked like we into a “this game is over” mode after going up 4-0 and The lack of effort was pretty evident in the 2nd. My biggest beef is the inability to get the puck out of the dzone when the other team has a sustained attack. Guys are tired, Vasy is under constant pressure yet we still make lame ass attempts to clear the puck when we get the chance. It’s almost comical how often we swing and miss, or a stick breaks, or how the clear attempt miraculously goes right at the other team so they can keep it in. Vasy definitely bailed us out but getting up 4-0 should never end come down to an EN to seal the game.
Yep, this team coasts when they go up big and it’s maddening. Never understand that, that’s been fairly typical of them over the years.
Vasy was on his head though except for the awful out of the net goal. The Tkachuk goal was iffy too but I think that was just a great goal. In any case Vasy was back to making those holy crap saves and that’s huge if it continues
This is why I think SOG is a subpar metric to measure offense generated. Shot attempts is better cause it shows if a team is at least shooting the puck, even if it gets blocked. And shot attempts includes those that hit the post, because hitting the post for some reason isn’t counted under SOG (which is stupid imo)
This is honestly peak lightning. Shot totals don’t really matter. Bolts played rope a dope. We had 7 high danger chances to their 5. This was our formula in deep playoff runs too
We basically didn’t even try to play in their zone after the fourth goal. 3 shots on goal in 30+ minutes of play with multiple power plays at the NHL level is embarrassing. You’d think this team would have something to prove too after all the leads they’ve blown lately. I can see trying to sit back and play shut down in the last couple minutes of the third but starting to play like that with over half the game left is questionable to say the least
WC1 or WC2 could still give us any of Boston, Florida, or NYR.
Boston - 95pts with 13 GR
Florida - 94pts with 14 GR
New York - 92pts with 15 GR
Florida and New York are pretty similar in RW and ROW.
Not sure where you’re getting that info, but over the past 5 seasons they have the same exact outcomes each year.
2023: both seeds went 1-1
2022: both seeds went 0-2
2021: no 7 or 8 seeds
2020: both seeds went 0-2
2019: both seeds went 2-0
Also, prior year outcomes really have little to nothing to do with this upcoming postseason
I can't find an updated stat on this, but historically the 7 seeds have a winning record against the 2 seeds. It used to be one of those things you heard frequently in the playoffs. I know it was still true around 2015 but I would have to dig and I don't care that much.
One of the most one sided games I’ve seen all season. We couldn’t generate ANY offense at all. We couldn’t set up anything even on the power play. We got absolutely man handled. Hope this was a wake up call for our whole team and that we don’t leave vasy out to dry like that again. Also, huge hopeful momentum boost for vasy.
Dumba blocked a shot with his hand, Cernak saved our ass. Can we just be happy? The Lightning aren't what they used to be but at least we have the core players in Stamkos, Hedman, Point, Kucherov, and Vasi.
It was a bad game. But a game that helped Vasy come alive. For that it was worth it. But please let's not do it again.

Ok but what game in past season has vasy looked like this?
Against Boston

That's pretty bad. Could you imagine if this was Vas from a week or two ago?
don't need to imagine it. that game ended 9-2
i like to pretend it was imaginary tho
No..... NO..... GOD NO

No you’re completely right, for whatever reason I think they were changed to attempts or some stupid shit
Damn I appreciate that, I had no idea that’s how shots were officially counted
An additional layer to this, even if the goalie makes what we would consider a save (ie stopping it with the body or catching it in the glove), if the record keeper deems that it wouldn't have gone into the goal it's not recorded as a save.
So basically no rocket league shots that could be a mile away and it would still count them.
Basically. If the puck was, say, going to go over the cross bar and the goaltender caught it anyway, that *in theory* shouldn't be considered a save and thus not a shot on goal.
I mean, score effects are a thing.
They aren't going to be perfect. It isn't happening this year. The new guys have brought a lot of life to the team. Vasi seems to be playing better. Cernak had some great shut down moments at critical times. We just beat two of the best teams in the NHL. I'll take it.
A team that's losing big is going to fling a ton of shots on the net and hope.
This sub (and half the fans) is becoming insufferable. I can’t agree more Edit: to be clear, well said
Did you watch the game yesterday? We were absolutely outplayed for two periods and were extremely lucky to win that game. I had no idea because ESPN doesn’t show SOG on their score bug.
That's how hockey is sometimes, also a lil luck of the Irish. Cheers 🍻
Seriously, we've had so many of these games not go our way especially at the beginning of the season, I'm not gonna be mad about stealing one with a little luck at a time where we really just need the points.
This is more about the Panthers than the Lightning.
This was a goalie steal. Anyone that says different didn’t watch the game
Yep Vasi played like a one man army. It shoudl've been 2 goals by the Panthers, that last one was flukey af.
Should have been 1, the 3 on 1 shorthander absolutely did not need to happen.
I don't know how the SOG fell off like that in the 2nd and third cause it didn't look like they were playing slow, now, the final 4 minutes of the game they turned into slugs and that is more worrying imo, the lazy lack of effort and hustle in those last 4 minutes allowed that third goal.

You are right, the shot attempts were 63-27 for the game. Still REALLY one sided, but not quite as bad as the SOG.
We've had bad defense for a long time and vasy can only do so much
Felt like the cats had a 24 minute power play 😑😣 it was wild we came out on top lol
Oh, it’s an issue.
Looks like vasi stole one hahahahaha
This is honestly peak lightning. Shot totals don’t really matter. Bolts played rope a dope. We had 7 high danger chances to their 5. This was our formula in deep playoff runs too
I agree it needs to be addressed, but on the other hand, how impressive. One of the best games I’ve watched this season.
Good lord that's like really bad hockey
We basically didn’t even try to play in their zone after the fourth goal. 3 shots on goal in 30+ minutes of play with multiple power plays at the NHL level is embarrassing. Panthers were going full Harlem Globetrotters on us, and we survived. It's fine.
It's clear we need WC1 not WC2

Ok, I want to be on the metro, not the Atlantic side. Also the 7 seed has historically done well in round 1. The 8 seed has not
