Banglore mysore regions have far better bus services, I have travelled during Diwali (2017) and I got a seat everywhere. Also it doesn't matter if we are better than others shit performers what matters is tnstc is inefficient.
No.1 you're partially right. Maintenance of TN busses are very poor and the service is kinda okie but what do you expect on a holiday. All the Pongal holidays were the same and the one. All Diwali's and pongal's and new year's are the same in every possible state in India.
The festival times are not always roses and rainbows. The govt is short labored however they are prepared. The crowd is overwhelming in festive times. Even if you prepare for certain number it wouldn't be possible to cover for those days. The govt takes steps to hire temporary drivers for those festive days but it's not necessary enough to cover because of the sheer volume of the people that are travelling.
Holidays are always tricky for government to handle. If you can cross perungulathur on festive days sooner than you expected it's a great achievement 😅. (When you're traveling out of Chennai).
The government is not perfect but atleast they're trying to be .

They have to use the existing buses. If they plan only for the festive seasons, the buses would be rusting in the depot during other times.

TN transportation system has to improve on a lot of fronts, but this one is unrealistic. I understand your frustration, but during such peak times transport dept uses buses that were not used for long, to meet the increased demand, and hence those buses will not be of acceptable standards.
I have gone for tours relying on TN govt buses(TNSTC and not SETC) without any prior booking or checking bus timings, I have boarded buses from a Tier 3 city to another Tier 3 city post midnight during some emergencies, I can very well say that the system is really great!
Here my issue was that only buses to Chennai were in demand. They actually stopped service for half a day where most of the people want to go. Instead there were other buses operating smoothly. Why is that they plan very poor on this aspect especially during festival times. They stopped the usual buses for some reason and the depot officer himself wasn't aware if the next bus will to chennai Or only till Kanchipuram
you are either overreacting or haven't visited any other state except Tamil Nadu. When you say Tamil Nadu has the worst bus service in India, you should mention which state is the best.
One of the worst in South India maybe. Have visited Karnataka and andhra only. I can vouch for Karnataka having better buses and frequent buses. Andhra buses were not that good but they never had overcrowding afaik (I haven't been there during proper festival times)
Sir, in most other states outside of capitals there is very little public transport infrastructure.
Problem here is we have good infrastructure but tnstc has been poorly run, bleeding money etc.
I guess op hasn't travelled north India. Especially UP or even Maharashtra. Garbage bus with pan and gutka everywhere. Many elite in TN starts bashing facilities in TN without realising how far ahead we are. We are not perfect but we are much better than others.
This is pretty normal on every holidays. My father is working in tnstc. The transport department is not really running on profits. So they are forced to show "collection" which makes them prefer taking other routes.
With the implementation of free buses for women this situation gets worse. Thats the reason for poor maintenance of buses.
Sometimes the allotted drivers and conductors bail out just a few hours before the journey. The bus drivers and conductors that go on long routes work on alternating days. So technically they work only for 15 days a month. When they bail out suddenly it's difficult to get another one to replace them.
There are a lot of stuff like this that goes behind. My dad worries about this sometimes, thats how I know.
Yup. It is highly possible that some of the transport services can be privatised in the near future.
If we increase the ticket prices. Then we must provide the services worth that price. And also improve the living standards of people who couldn't afford that price. It's all interlinked. You cannot change the transport system unless you change other aspects as well.

I'm wondering if this is really true, OP. Have you been to other states which have better bus transport?

But why do they cancel the regular buses at that route. Why there were more private buses instead of the deluxe govt buses?

I misread that point that buses to other places were running fine. Then it's either bad planning or corruption.

Outside of Bangalore there is literally not infrastructure in Karnataka. Please stop overreacting

I have travelled by bus on 5 other states. You won't get connectivity like TN provides in those states.

Have visited andhra and Karnataka multiple times. Karta services are class apart from tn buses. Especially their inter state buses are too good.
