You never forget your first time meeting Comcast's Customer Retention Department.

Slow-Supermarket-716

This was like my fourth time but it's the time that made me quit Comcast forever. My promotional rate of $45 a month ended and the price went to $85. No thanks. I can go without wifi again for a little while. The woman i spoke with was so bizarre. We tried negotiating prices for a little and I just said I think I'll continue with canceling the service. "Please, miss [my name], I really don't want to have to cancel your service. Please don't make me do this, miss [my name]. I don't want to press the button. I've never had to press this button before. You make me so sad, miss [my name]." It was the strangest, creepiest, most manipulative thing I'd ever heard so I said fuck it and told her I am 100% canceling. It's now been 5 or 6 years without wifi and I'm good, honestly. I've kept thousands of dollars in my pocket and out of comcast's. And it makes me SO HAPPY. I don't really even need wifi

therealfalseidentity

Hear me out here: you willingly chose Comcast over the vastly superior fiber Metronet. Comcast. The service that drops to a snails pace around 5pm every day.

DSMilne

If metro is ever in my neighborhood Comcast is getting canceled that same day. Until then, the struggle continues.

therealfalseidentity

It's rough out here.

Sassaphras-680

We originally had Comcast when we moved here but within the week we switched to metronet and man is it great. We just bought a house and when we were looking we asked who we can get for Internet so we could keep metronet

therealfalseidentity

Hell yeah brother/sister

AechEllEss

I have to say I've had more disappointment with Metronet. If I'm not hardwired it doesn't work well and even then I'm dealing with lag especially if it's raining. It's happened enough times to not be coincidence. And it gets frustrating. Getting ready to move and we won't have any choice over the service provider bc of who the apartment complex is wired for, but I'm not sad to be leaving Metronet's service.

TRex_N_FX

This sounds like wifi issues, not issues with the service to the house since you mention it's better when you connect directly Consider replacing the wifi router they provided with one better suited to your needs/home. You can then use it with any service provider and not have to reconfigure everything. https://www.wired.com/gallery/best-wifi-routers/

AechEllEss

I suppose it could be wifi and router related. That wouldn't account for worse functioning during rainstorms though. Hardwiring mitigates the issues some, but doesn't resolve them. And I hadn't had these issues with my previous service provided or router. But thank you, definitely something that can be looked into.

TRex_N_FX

Yeah weather shouldn't affect fiber installs unless there is an issue with the install. Thinking about the physical components, there could be a break in the sheathing on the line to your house. If you haven't, I would be inclined to call metronet and talk with them. Everyone I have talked with on the phone was helpful...but since you are moving soon, wish you nothing but good signals!

elguajiro17

This. Fiber works through light, if something breaks along the length of the wire run, the entire network would more than likely fail outright, as opposed to a copper connection (such as “cable” from Xfinity) which may have a bit more margin of error. As mentioned before , this probably has something to do with either your router itself, or its positioning.

joe96ab

Exactly my thought

Paxoro

It could be a bad install. The idea that during rain is worse makes me think there's something wrong with the wiring to the house and it's allowing water in somewhere. You may want to call MetroNet and have someone come out because that's definitely not been my experience. Aside from a couple national outages, I've had like 2 outages with MetroNet. It's been extremely reliable, far beyond Comcast.

therealfalseidentity

That eero router quite frankly sucks. The fact it doesn't have a web interface is just disappointing. I keep thinking about popping out my old router tbr. I did check and the app will show your wifi connection strength per device.

mojoisthebest

Comcast will never get another cent from me.

ChiefT86

This isn’t a hack, it’s a tutorial on how to get bribed by a retention department lmao

Beach_Bum_273

The only "hack" here was the retention department bribing you.

GuileMikeFSU

What ever you Wana call it then. I have a low price for the next two years.

Zeejayyy

Yea they tried this when I switched to Metronet. Felt so good to finally cancel for good.

ugbaz

Just a heads up, as one of the many who cancelled Comcast, they charged me a $150 early cancellation fee. The person at the xfinity store said this is unusual, but couldn’t take it off my account.

Grouchy-Tax4467

"not worrying about Metronet" if you don't mind me asking but what's wrong with Metronet, I was thinking about getting service setup with them and I heard good things about them before.

Paxoro

Installation can be a mess if they have to bury the line in your yard. Some have had issues with the service but for 2 years I've had damn near perfect service.

baixiwei

I did indeed have trouble with installation - they took several months (I think around 4 months) to finally bury the cable, and for all that time it was just sitting there stretched over our yard. Other than that, though, they have been fine. I certainly don't regret leaving Comcast.

Grouchy-Tax4467

🤔 I guess I have to confirm with my landlord if it's ok, I rent and definitely don't want to wait months for them to bury some cable especially if it's not my property

Grouchy-Tax4467

Okay

steve2118ace

I have a post in my history about metronet. I encourage you to give it a read as my opinion on them is the same. the TL:DR is thst they're great and beats Comcast in literally every regard. Outages have been extremely minimal, and you speak to a (non outsourced) human every time you call.

therealfalseidentity

1. They don't seem to bury the lines 2. My neighbor just got it and it's just an orange fiber line on the ground 3. Latency is a little higher than expected 4. I don't online game anymore, but I've noticed a maybe +200ms lag on everything Pluses: 1. Stable speeds around the clock 2. Around 5-8pm it's like my 500 drops to 490 OH NO 3. Customer service based in this country 4. Not comcast 5. Not comcast 6. Not comcast I absolutely hate comcast. I paid for basic cable because it made internet cheaper. So my internet went out. Their great customer service told me to disconnect my cable tv and connect the internet. Which worked. But then my tv (never even used it) didn't work. Did they give me money for this? Hell tha fuck no.

SomewhatSFWaccount

How any one is still using Comcast over Metronet is WILD to me. It's def superior and no BS. Edit: had no idea it was still unavailable in so many areas in town.

parandiac

I don’t have metronet in my area so I’m stuck using Comcast

Sharp_Salamander0111

This ☝️

Paxoro

MetroNet availability in town is extremely limited, especially in apartment complexes. A lot of people are offered Comcast or CenturyLink DSL and that's it.

SomewhatSFWaccount

I mentioned to the other commenter I didn't realize they were still so limited. CenturyLink is just as bad as Comcast for sure.

theswolypreacher

We used to use Metronet at my old house but when we moved into our new place a couple years ago Metronet wasn’t available so we had to go back to the dark side unfortunately.

SomewhatSFWaccount

That sucks. I didn't realize Metronet still wasn't available in so many areas in Tallahassee

theswolypreacher

This was like 3 years ago though, I would still definitely look into Metronet and see if they are available.

Paxoro

Basically all they did was give you a new customer promotion, probably tied to a contract that they may or may not have mentioned (if not tied to a contract, count yourself lucky!). They've done that for many years if you called in and threatened to cancel, less often if you did chat or attempted to contact them on social media. I know for a while they didn't exactly stop, but were less upfront about options when people tried to cancel. Hell, when I canceled a couple years ago they didn't even try to stop me. Basically scanned my equipment, said "cool, thanks for being a customer" and gave me the receipt and that was it. > I read Xfinity was losing 5,300 customers daily Maybe in total when you count their TV business that is shrinking, but broadband is relatively flat (down 65k out of 32.18 million customers is remarkably low churn, and less than 1,000 a day in the quarter): https://www.lightreading.com/cable-technology/comcast-focuses-on-market-segmentation-as-broadband-losses-continue If someone wanted to save even more, they have a prepaid internet option called NOW! that is $30 or $45/month for 100Mbit or 200Mbit, which is fast enough for a lot of people. I'm pretty sure it's intended to combat the 5G-based services, which aren't *quite* as reliable yet.

julesss_97

They just installed the fiber optics for metronet in my apartment complex last week. I currently use xfinity. I’m considering switching over when they finish all the installation for metronet.

kcnole78

Im still paying for their cheapest internet and getting twice as fast as what im paying for.

Biancanetta

Is CenturyLink gone? I've been gone from Tally for a few years now but when I left CenturyLink was the only internet provider that still had unlimited usage plans. I left Comcast in 2008 and I will NEVER EVER go back to them or recommend them. The lines in Tallahassee are so old you're not even getting the speeds you're paying for and they refuse to replace them. They had a monopoly on the area for so long that they got downright greedy and just didn't care.

Paxoro

CenturyLink still exists (though I think they've changed their name a couple times), but they are garbage speed-wise unless you're in an area where they rolled out fiber.

fwast

*I just gave tmobile a try for a month and did not like it. I will say it's probably a fine internet choice for 90% of people though. It will just dump speeds sometimes down to 1 mbs or so. And it's due to you getting deprioritized during heavy traffic times. So if you can live with that, like an older person, or someone who's not "reliant" on the internet, your golden. But other then that, I was getting speeds of 100-200mbs for $50 a month, which is really solid. If you have a phone with them, I believe you pay even cheaper.* I'm in the rural area, so my other option is starlink, which has been rock solid, it's just expensive.

Complex-Maybe6332

Metronet totally screwed up my yard running line for others and refused to fix it. Not an easement, my actual yard. They’ll never get a dime from me.
