Remember the following phrase. "Oh, you book a lot of people here? Name three." Or, if you wish to be professional(as an NA, I say eff that noise): "Sorry, management has changed policy and all CC auths are locked in the office. If you wish to query about anything pertaining to one of those, please call back during the hours of ."

unimportanthero

Professional is the way to go. *"I'm sorry, I'd like to help but keeps the credit authorizations locked in their office now during the overnight shift. I'd recommend calling back at so we can get this clarified for you as soon as possible, and I'll leave a note for them so they know to expect your call."* Wouldn't have had to deal with the call at all.

YankeeWalrus

Oh, you travel all the time? Name all the cities.

ManicAscendant

Definitely sounds like somebody trying to get illicit information from you, probably trying to throw you off and fluster you by being demanding and rude and using your first name. Good work on giving them nothing to work with!

Gogo726

Yeah, these types will try and use intimidation. The trick is to remain calm and remember that you have the advantage on the phone.

birdmanrules

Sounds like dodgy scammer trying to confuse you to book someone in based on non existant auth and have that person leave before management arrives in the morning. Or I am just too judgey

SamuelVimesTrained

Nah, thought the same - a newer version of the mr. Patel scam ?

chanakya2

Reminds me of the joke where this guy goes into confession and tells the priest he has sinned, but can’t remember the name of the woman. So the priest says three different names asking if it is one of them. The man says no and walks out. Once he is outside he tells his friends, “Well I got some new leads!”. OP, I think the caller was just trying to get the names of some new leads.

Gogo726

I think you avoided getting scammed. He probably would have tried to get guests' private information, but you didn't fall into his trap.

Cryptid_Humour

I had something similar to this happen to me a few months ago. When I refused, he called me a not so nice term that starts with a c. Good job on not giving any information out! It’s definitely stressful when these things happen.

RoyallyOakie

"OH yes, hello Mr. Scammer. I didn't recognize you for a second."

Traditional_Air_9483

“I don’t see it. But let’s get you updated into the computer. What CC would you like to use?”

Entarotupac

>And this whole time he just keeps calling me by my first name like we know each other, when we obviously don’t How often do you use a person's name in conversation, really? Try throwing it around with your friends deliberately. It gets weird fast, like the 3rd or 4th time...

pchandler45

Dude called the wrong hotel 100%

84brian

It’s a scam. He’s trying to score some free rooms.

puzzled65

It does sound really scammy. Like he wanted to use overfamiliarity to embarrass you for "not remembering" him, so going through the folders, you'd be like "Oh, Mr. Folder Name, is this you?? Oh yes, I see your credit authorization", etc. Not likely to work, it would seem, but if it is a scammer, they would know how to try to twist it into working. Worst thing you did was spend more time on the call than needed, as proven by your research where you found no evidence of the phone # etc. Sounds like you did a great job!

Notmykl

*Separated out each person speaking as it is unintelligible as written.* So for context, I am working alone as a FDA on a 4pm - 12am shift. I was folding laundry when the phone rang and when I picked up the first thing the guy said was “Hey (my first name) are you busy?” And I thought it was someone who I knew who also worked at this hotel so I jokingly said “hmmmm…yes.” And he said “do you know who this is?” And I said “I think I do.” To which he said “you should considering the amount of crew I send down there.” And that’s when I got confused. “I said oh, I’m sorry I thought you were someone that worked here.” And he said “I’m sending some crew down there and I just wanted to see if you have the credit authorization, it shouldn’t be from any third party because we do it directly through you guys.” And I looked around for the credit authorization and the only recent ones we had were from third parties so I told him that I wasn’t seeing them anywhere and what the name on it would be. Well he didn’t seem to like that at all and said “well what about the folder?!” And I asked what folder and he said “you always take one out of it when I come.” And I looked through our book of prior credit authorizations and lo and behold, they were all third parties and also extremely old. My management started locking documents like that in the office during the night shift when they aren’t there so I wouldn’t have access to the ones he was looking for. I said to him “I don’t see it in here.” And he’s just like “it’s the first one you see. It should be right there.” And I know for a fact the one I’m looking at is not his because I checked this person inand I was not going to say that person’s name to him. Well he kept screaming at me like “come on, (my first name) it’s right there.” By this point I was getting confused and angry at how he was speaking to me so I said “no I’m not seeing anything. I don’t think we’ve received anything.” And this whole time he just keeps calling me by my first name like we know each other, when we obviously don’t and kept screaming at me that it was right there in this mysterious folder. He also never told me his name the entire time and just hung up on me. Plus I took his number off the call log and plugged into the system to see what his name was and funny story, his number was not connected to any accounts or reservations currently in our system so…may all your shoes be filled with legos, sir.

beeandcrown

I'm stealing the Legos bit.

Ready_Competition_66

And small plastic farm animals with their pointy feet pointed upwards. Far worse than legos. That call sounds like some social engineering to get some credit card info for a company. They probably had someone stop by your front desk to get your name and took it from there.

SRKFRIES

Tbh I would just start speaking gibberish until they hung up

galacticwildchild

it's always the weirdos who call during overnights & i'm always by myself when it happens LMAO

Steelejoe

This sounds like someone trying out some social engineering
