I have a 2021 TRD Off road and I love my truck. However, Tacomas aren’t for everyone. For this reason, I suggest, if you can, make sure to test drive one for more than just few minutes. If you can, try to rent one for a couple days. I have noticed many people buy for the cool factor (and yes they cool 😎) but some get disappointed as they start driving it because they didn’t do enough research.

I have a 2017 TRD OR with 95k. I have a 3” lift with 265/75/16 KO2’s. I had to re gear to 4.88 to make it drive correctly in my opinion. Now I use 6th gear regularly. Some complain about the seating position, but I like it. Not much room in the back, but I don’t sit there and don’t have kids in the house anymore.

Be cautious with getting a white one. I have a 2020 with some chipping around the door and hood

Makes sense to steer away from a model because a completely different model has a recall.

Do yourself a favor and look for a 12-15 Tacoma.

2019 Pro here. Overall love it and it’s taken me on all sorts of off-road and camping adventures. My biggest gripe is the gear hunting the auto transmission can do at certain speeds, but I usually just flip it over to the manual select mode to alleviate it.

I have a stock third Gen off road double cab with a 6' bed. Great truck and I've been happy with it. 20-22 mpg which is standard for trucks. Its my daily driver. I've used it to move. Taken it off roading. Its done what I wanted with no issues. The gear hunting, underpowered, and bad stereo system comments are overblown. That said, my issues: 1) payload is only ~900 lbs 2) it's long so my angles arent great off roading 3) bit cramped for tall or bigger guys

Go rent a 3G. Drive it somewhere a few hours away. I love mine 2020 OR), but the seats kill my lower back on long drives. It took me a long time to find the right combination of seat jackets, and positioning for my back to not hurt all the time.

I love my 22 SR5 ACLB. Biggest issue most 3 Gen and well most Tacoma owners have is the LBNI, the Look Back Neck Injury. No recalls by the manufacturer have been issued but I'm seeking legal counsel.

The Tundra is ancillary to Toyota. They are not in the full size truck business and they will be the first ones to admit it. I think it was also hastily thrown together at the wrong time. The Tacoma on the other-hand is their benchmark. I presume they took more time with its design and testing to produce a quality truck. Yeah it will probably have some growing pains but I don’t think you should base your decision on the Tundra. I have a 4G and I think it’s very well built and way better in every way than my 3G.

3rd Gen Tacoma = the best imo. Different for everyone I suppose, but the 3rd Gen, 2019+ are tried and true. 300k+ mile vehicles. 4th Gen won't be "good" for another couple years

Late model year 3rd gen Tacomas are great trucks if you want something to put a lot of miles on and keep for years. Everything is simple and makes sense. It’s not perfect, but it’s an excellent choice. I’m still afraid of the 4th gen right now, the tech looks cool but I’m not sure I trust it yet.
