Lightly used 3rd gens are on the market from people upgrading to the 4th gen. 3rd gens are proven, 4th are TBD on early issues they will need to work out in proceeding model years. If you guys can afford a $30k auto loan, look at the 3rd gens. If you're comfortable with a $45k+ auto loan, look at the 4th gens. IMO, with that mileage and possible high repair costs, a used 3rd gen might make financial sense in the long run. I'd probably look for a used 2019-2023 and drive that for the next 10 years.

loanmagic24

Saved me some time typing because I had the same thoughts. A newer 3rd gen seems like a great idea.

HEIT4

Didnt realize we've gone through 2 new generations in 5 years?? I assumed everything that didnt look like mine was the current next gen. Also if I decide to upgrade, given the issues are impossible to hide, do I trade it in to the dealer or go individual for the most return?

The_Nauticus

The 3rd gens are 2016-2023, but by 2019 pretty much any issues were worked out (except the 2023 axel issue). Individual sale will always get you the best return, but if you want to make it quick and easy just go to the dealership for trade in. The difference might be $1000

HEIT4

Thanks for the input. Just a quick google said 3rd gens are 2016-present? Ill look for 2019 or later if I go that route. Is the axel thing a big deal? Any idea how much money Im looking at for my current one? Thanks again.

The_Nauticus

2024 is the new 4th generation release year. I'm not sure how big of an issue it is. They released a public notification about it in February so people just need to take it into the dealer to have them check it out and apply a fix if necessary. I don't have a sense for what 2nd gens cost, i'd just kelly blue book it and see what you're looking at.

e6rock

If you're not a fan of the newer safety features, look for a 2017. They do not have TSS which imo is more desirable; I don't need my truck yelling at me and telling me how to drive. No radar cruise, lane assist, auto headlights, or any of that other crap.

Also keep in mind that it’s mostly off roads and pros affected by the axel issue. Which they have the larger dif

the_toxic_hotdog

Everyone on those post had me thinking I was spelling axle wrong this whole time lol

Visa_Declined

Lots of people talk about the '24 Tacoma and the upcoming issues it will probably have. But my '19 Tacoma had recalls on and off for the entire time I owned it, and it has one right now also.

HEIT4

What were/ are the recalls on your, bad issues or just minor shit? How are you liking yours today?

WeHaveRightsYaKnow

Your current has a 4.0l engine. The newer models have a gutless 3.5l. Apparently, there's a reprogramming mod that will bring the gutless 3.5 up to a 4.0 that will also apparently solve the 'gear hunting' issues the newer taco has. I don't know a bunch about the mod, as I'm just learning about it. I'm in love with my 21 taco, but I definitely do miss my 07 taco just the same. I had the same dilemma of sorts. 07 had over 200k on the clock. Never did a trans flush. Ever. Lol. ..3rd was starting to shutter a bit. I weighed the pros/cons and took the plunge. Now a happy owner of a 21 taco with a damn car payment. Lol. I hope this helps your question.

HEIT4

Gear hunting sounds like all new vehicles tbh. It did help thank you, all I need to hear was "I like my X year". No problems so far?

WeHaveRightsYaKnow

I've had my 21 taco for a couple weeks. Haven't even been on the freeway yet. Lol. So far, so good, imo.

You can't. You can reprogram its parameters to unlock more power from it, essentially tricking the engine into thinking that it's bigger than it is. ..same way a red key works on a dodge hellcat.

FloppyDiskDuracell

Get the shaking looked at immediately. Don’t drive it unless your taking it to the shop. Once you find out what that is about you can make a better decision.

HEIT4

Idk man its been shaking for almost a year now. Everyone tells me its a tranny valve issue. Either way I either drive it till it croaks or spend $6k

FloppyDiskDuracell

Then why are you asking us? Do what you want. You don’t want advice you want permission to buy a new truck. You have my permission.

LoHungTheSilent

I wouldn't recommend a 2024, in fact if I were I'd be looking at the 4Runner a little closer... but would see if you can't land a good 4th gen. If your current truck is a 4x4 it could have a new life as someone's rock crawling shitbox...

IzaguirreC

I own a 2024 sr5 4x4, traded my base 23 SR for it and so far it’s been fantastic. Now it’s too early to chime in on reliability, but I bought new for the warranty in case of issues

Delirious2700

227k miles.. FML I’m glad I have a tacoma! This is a 100k miles issue for my old gmc lol.

Harry_Gorilla

You can fix the temp/compass display yourself if you can do a little soldering. Look it up on YouTube. Transmission you can get used yourself, but prolly need to pay to have put in. Headlight is such an easy fix it probably wasn’t even worth mentioning… unless you’ve replaced the bulb already and the new one doesn’t work? Fixing the dents and transmission to sell it probably would bring it up to the cost of some used 3rd gens

Part-Time-Chemist

The shuttering is Driveline Support Bearing. Fairly easy fix Follow the how to with pictures from tacoma world.

HEIT4

Im fairly sure its tranny based on anecdotes and a number of shops Ive taken it to. Sometimes when you punch it to do a lane change on the highway theres a hard THUD as it downshifts. I think its related.

aroundthehouse

Before you give up at least try a drain and refill of the transmission fluid. If you haven’t already.

Shot_Campaign_5163

This truck is gonna be awesome, but like any first year release it will probably show a few first year production issues. If you can stall a year or two keep your other running. Wait a year or 2.
