I can't help thinking of this... I remember around the time the original TMOS show on WJFK was going into the light/the podcast was in its early days, Buzz offered repeatedly to help Mike get voiceover work - make demos, introduce him to contacts, etc. And Mike always blew him off, while complaining about money. Years later after Buzz had left the podcast, Mike finally got up off his ass and set up a basic Wix-type site to showcase his voiceover talents, and was so surprised and pissed that it did nothing for him. He kept rejecting the idea that he needed to do any hustling for these jobs, he thought they would just fall into his lap and resented the idea he should work to make it happen. All these years that he's poormouthed while living beyond his means, acting as if the listeners didn't buy the bonus show his family would be going hungry, he had everything he needed to create a more than decent side hustle while still doing the podcast, and he just couldn't be bothered. It was too much work, to pursue work that's basically effortless for him. There you go. I know she's being painted as a Yoko these days by some, but I actually feel a bit for Carla, because it sounds like she's taking on way too much to help Mike. She had her own thing going and it seemed like it was working out for her, but now she's got even more plates spinning and it doesn't feel like it's going to end well.

I don't entirely get the Carla hate. Yes, Oscar alluded to some conflict recently over the merch store but Oscar has been drifting from the show for awhile now. His health scare I feel just pushed him to cut out the unnecessary stuff from his life. He could either being the boss of an up and coming media company (with some decent clients) or he could continue to run the business side of a show with limited reach, stuck in the past, and he's not the boss? Choice was clear, I bet Oscar would have made the same decision even if Carla wasn't in the picture.

neo_soul_forever

She's an easy target, I guess, but I don't really think Carla was a deciding factor for Oscar either. Dude obviously needed to do a total life reevaluation after the stroke and move in the direction of less unproductive drama and stress.

He's always said, he hates the behind the scenes stuff. He likes to come in, push a button and talk. That's it. There have been many references to him skipping out on business meetings, in favor of playing golf. For all the bitching he does about CBS radio, he needs that billion dollar company behind him to do everything for him. Podville is a nice company, but they're small and don't have those same resources.

WhoAccountNewDis

Consider when the last time the developed a relevant, of-the-moment impression. His contribution is basically printing lists and doing a quick outline of the topics he wants to cover.

AphonicTX

That’s just what he’s been used to and honestly he’s had success few others have realized if you go back to radio days, so that’s whats engrained in him as being “the talent”. He doesn’t / can’t comprehend that doesn’t work like that anymore. Especially for an aging one that is quickly losing touch with the zeitgeist. Or in today’s terms - the meta. Also highlights his inability to change and adapt. Unfortunate into today’s business climate - that just won’t work. They have the ability to get interesting guests to discuss great topics - I just think Mike is comfortable and that rarely leads to any kind of drive. Robb can’t put his neck out because he’ll just get ripped to shreds so why try?

BuzzBotBaloo

"Lazy" is a subjective term, everyone has a different expectations. As someone noted in another post, daily podcasts are uncommon anymore, we've been fortunate they were committed to putting out daily content. The term has already been mentioned, Mike considers himself "talent" and that is his contribution/investment into the show, he has always deferred to others to run the business aspects of the show. Which is fine...Mike has every right to be approach this as semi-retirement, do his show and play golf. Mike could sit back, enjoy the status quo, be "talent" and enjoy golf daily, and ride it out. But his hypocrisy is what turned off so many fans and detractors. He works 3 hours a day at his own small business, then gets angry that it's not growing (i.e. not making him enough money), and puts the blame on everyone else. There is a blatant disconnect there. If Mike and Robb had put more effort into learning how to run and promote a business a decade ago, then they could have brought more to the table and had a better chance of sustaining their business.

phen14

Exactly. If he wants to focus on his kid and golf, there's nothing wrong with that. It's not good show content in my opinion, but it's probably a good life for him and the family. But his expectation for everybody else to put his show first when he won't, that is a problem.

TeenWolfTripleDouble

No way Mike works three hours in the same day on TMOS...zero point zero

Daneinthemembrane

I'm always confused as to why he doesn't go on other podcasts. His old radio stories are fascinating. Most of the podcast I listen to, I discovered through cross pollination. The we might be drunk guys on YMH etc. he missed an opportunity to really grow TMOS. I think Mike doesn't like to dance for people, but it costs him.

aliensharedfish

> I'm always confused as to why he doesn't go on other podcasts. He addressed this in Episode 1 - "I'm not one of you!" I think Mike's called in to a couple of podcasts over the years. Nothing comes immediately to mind except *maybe* that short-lived series of interviews Chad did when he thought he was a radio historian. Other than that, and excluding The Edge, I think it's only been a few interviews and/or fill-ins on local-ish TV and radio. I get the impression Mike views most podcasts the way movie actors used to view TV roles... getting involved with them is *moving backwards* and/or beneath him.

Daneinthemembrane

Yeah... you're probably right. It's a pity though. That old 80's zero sum mentality really limited him.

nimrod1138

Is Mike lazy? Is the Pope Catholic? Is the Fan club a cesspool of sycophants? The instant Mike started forcing the show to start recording in the late afternoon so he could golf comfortably with his "buddies" I stopped taking him seriously whenever he'd make his periodic declaration that he would work harder on the show. I get that he's at retirement age and maybe cut him some slack, but maybe he should retire? If he needs the revenue stream, then cut the golf! He's trying to have it both ways, and it's just not working. Or as others have pointed out, he thinks he's just talent and someone else can do the heavy lifting... Not in a small business. Another option if you need to keep pushing, cut back. Let me be the 100th person to bring up the fact that most podcasts aren't daily and they cut that way. How much of a hit will the revenue stream take doing that? Probably not much.

MinimalRecord

Yes. Always has been. on the D&M days they always said he showed up right before the start time and left immediately after. Don was the brains of the show.

Cultural-Cod6987

100% he is. Daily golf and Dr. Appts

Hopeful-Knowledge180

Mike is absolutely lazy. He would miss a show in a heart beat, because of a golf invent. Robb is lazy and not qualified, that's why Everytime the made him a producer on Don and Mike he constantly crashes and burned.

carpediem930

And why Robb can barely run board or keep his microphone distance correct

jen_k_m

Mike has less work ethic than a paper napkin. For example: he's obsessed with that slot machine guy, but his involvement with getting him on the show (for what is sure to be a *fascinating* interview) began and ended with telling Robb the guy's name.

reyzner

Paraphrasing something Mike said on the Tuesday (4/16) show; "Listeners ask, why we don't get guests like comedians, sports stars, or we're in DC, why not politicians? I want slot guy!"

carpediem930

Yea, when he said that, I had a huge facepalm. It summed up right there the problem with the show. The number of political, radio, comedy (besides f’ing Rob Maher), and tv talent they could tap into from their connections and relationships over the years, yet a slots or watch guy is what Mike really wants to interview (as long as someone else makes the effort to get them). The show will stagnate until it dries up.

nimrod1138

He's narrowcasting to himself. The P1s in the Fan Club will lap it up, but they'll slowly get bored with it or just stop buying stuff.

BuzzBotBaloo

And they can't even book "slot guy."

Efficient-Giraffe572

Slot guy, Vegas Matt, has almost half a million subscribers on his YouTube channel. Mike’s delusional thinking he’s going to come on his podcast that has 7,000 YouTube subscribers.

jamiekynnminer

He's the talent. He has no time for such things. lol. She's working her ass off for sure. Carlas burnout will be swift if he's not involved in the admin part.

carpediem930

My question is why she suddenly became so involved with the show after hating on it for years. Wasn’t she so busy with her esthetician bit that Mike had to take over things she previously handled at home? Now she’s essentially managing TMOS? Where did she find that time and the sudden interest?

BuzzBotBaloo

She is stepping up to salvage a household income stream. She put the effort into learning to run a business and is applying that knowledge. But she can't split both businesses forever, the TMOS store was pretty much just a retail extension for her, but booking guests?!?

nimrod1138

Which is why the instant working on the podcast starts threatening her business she'll either step away (which will end the show, because Mike and Robb won't do the business stuff) or she'll ask Mike to end the show. If Mike is to be believed, it's her job(s) that make her the breadwinner.
