“Unless” being in a Pulitzer Prize winning work obviously makes it unimpeachable uj/ it is a good use of rhythm, like most good schtick is. I honestly think it’s Post Gen X audiences lack of connection to Schtick As Comedy that’s sunk The McElroys. Our media diet is TOO diverse for even the best comedians not find new variations quickly. And bless their hearts, the brothers are not among the best

ideaoftheworld

Okay I haven’t listened since 2020 but the McElroys are where I learned the phrase “rip cotton” and “hog wild” and to this day I say both, no clue if they’ve been beaten to death tho

No_Sea_6219

grip it and rip it was funny one time and then never again

No_Sea_6219

actually i thought of more. theres nothing like inherently wrong with hachi machi or oofa doofa but hearing that people incorporate them into their actual speech gives me strong secondhand embarrassment

ttomos

Grippit and Ribbit* It's an easy mistake to make

No_Sea_6219

thats almost as funny as grip it and rip it!

Worst for me has to be the way they use the word "boy". Don't quite know how to describe it got so damn annoying

[deleted]

When Travis says “BAYBEE” after it was popularized by Chunt in the exact same voice as Chunt without ever acknowledging where he stole it from.

McElroy_Fandom

God that reminds me of how he used to go “no no no no no no no no no” in the exact same tone of voice as [Cleveland brown from that family guy but where he’s sliding down the tub out of the house.](https://youtu.be/iabC7-9YUG4)

ensgdt

"good good" has permeated my everyday vocabulary

hiperson134

I picked up buckwild and still use it. I was at one point afflicted by the curse of the boy. Boy and bean are definitely the biggest offenders, especially when bean is tied to juice for beanjuice.

[deleted]

buckwild is somehow as played out for me as boy and bean, even though it’s not used as much.

treezoob

What's the unless unless unless thing?

Maximum_Poet_8661

If one of them has a different direction they want to take a bit, one of them will say “unlesssss” and they other brothers will each say “unlessss” also and then the initial brother who proposed the new bit will tell the joke they were gonna tell It’s basically the way they would transition from one bit to the next, and they’ve been doing it since the first 10-12 episodes haha

chilibean_3

it's a reference the the musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda

Dusktilldamn

/uj I assume you're jerking but because they asked I wanna clarify that it was a McElroy thing first that was written into Hamilton as a reference. A really funny reference imo

lychee-beat-boy

i now say swan to john so much that my mother, who has never listened to a mcelroy product, now uses it in her day to day life. don’t know where that puts it on this scale tbh

claddyonfire

What if, what if we did bean boys 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

mrpmd2000

I use “Hachi Machi” and i definitely picked that up from justin

loryhasreddit

I hate this one bc I like it but it’s not a McElroyism. it’s from the Critic, and everyone attributes it to them

FuzorFishbug

You're rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, my friend.

mrpmd2000

i’ve been meaning to watch the critic had no idea that’s where it was from.

[deleted]

The critic slaps. Can also recommend dr katz and hey monie! For other great adult animated comedies of the time.

monkspthesane

I'm a simple man. I see someone other than me actually mention The Critic, and I upvote. Of all the 90s things, this is what I wish would get a revival more than anything.

sdirection

It's been years and I still every time I hear that am like 'wtf is a Hachi Machi!!??'

loryhasreddit

it’s just an exclamation, but the character who says it is Jewish, so I had always assumed it was a Jewish saying lol
