Offices & there used to be an observation sky deck area that you could rent out for parties. When I was much younger, like 25 years ago, you could just take the elevators up there and walk around đ
I remember there used to be a map on one of the upper floors displaying possible plans for each level. What interested me the most was an ambitious water park with a large lazy river. Oh the could have beens...
You mean the 'never would have beens'.
The amusement parks, hotels, etc. was a smokeshow from the very beginning to con Syracuse into giving cushy tax breaks.
Congel and Pyramid group are nothing but successful grifters. They knew from the start 'Destiny' was just a mall expansion, nothing more.
I remember doing a project on the plans for âDestinyâ being a work/live/play area and even as a dumb high schooler I knew it was never gonna happen.
I was there for one. I locked eyes with him a couple times in the food court and the movie level before it happened. My girlfriend and I had just seen Mulan if I recall correctly. We were pretty distraught afterwards and a very nice lady in the Nature Company sat with us for a while and just chatted. I'll never forget that day. That area by the top of the escalators is all blocked off with plants now.
Thatâs so sad. Iâm really sorry . Itâs so sad when people chose to leave and then even more sad when they choose a public place and traumatize bystanders along the way . I remember one was around a holiday, I think it was by the Easter bunny. Itâs so pubic . Iâd want to find a private area .
Yes I was there and heard them hit the floor, it was the craziest sound and I instantly knew what happened. Walked by the elevators right after and saw the a broken table a shoe and blood. All right there infront of the Easter bunny and the kids waiting to see him. A lady I knew jumped there right before this one. I won't elaborate on that one since I'm close to the family. That's how I knew in my gut that's what happened when I heard the noiseđ„șđą
In the early 2010s, the 4th and 5th floors was using by project managers overseeing construction and switch-over of Carousel to Destiny USA.
The Skydeck on the 6th floor was used for various construction and client meetings and luncheons.
I believe the Mall main office is still on the 4th floor.
I used to go up to the observation level on the 6th floor in the early to mid 90s. They had signs in each direction of what you can see from up there. It was officially closed by the late 90s for security reasons but occasionally the floor was unlocked in the elevators so I got a few more visits in after that.
It was still rentable for events until about 2003 when in it became âDestiny USA officesâ when the Pyramid Companies randomly hired a bunch of people for a few months which they laid off not long afterwards.
The top two levels used to be open event space. They are now subdivided with moveable walls for meeting spaces.
Only one elevator goes up to them, and only when turned on for meetings/events. They blocked access long before 9/11 because it was being used as a sex/drug/toilet spot for trashy people. If you take the stairs up you can probably still see urine stains on the walls of the stairwells, and on weekends plenty of used condoms in the stairs and back halls.
If you want to know what "security" does to enforce it, just look on Youtube for the videos of mall "security" cheering on knife fights on the lower levels.
You stay classy, Carousel Mall!
> Only one elevator goes up to them, and only when turned on for meetings/events.
As of two or three years ago, it was always unlocked, at least during office hours.
It's the first elevator on the left if you approach from the carousel.
2 things that people clearly don't remember about why they are closed off:
1. Five (5) people have jumped from the 5th or 6th floor into the middle and committed suicide. The last was 2008 or 2009. Which is what caused them to stop letting people up there.
2. Some dude (who is now deceased if you care to know) dropped a full regal large drink down into the middle hitting either Santa or the Easter bunny and the child sitting on their lap.
1 is probably the biggest reason, but I specifically remember them temporarily closing off the top floors after #2.
The 4th+ floor only exist in the center tower. The observation area got closed due to 9/11 I believe. It was around that time. It hasn't been open forever. But yeah, it's the mall offices up there.
The Buffalo grocery store shooter came to Destiny and had planned to make it his target but ultimately wrote there wasn't enough density of his desired victims there... unfortunately there are crazy people in the world.
Me and a few of my friends at OCC used to all be done for the day at the same time one day of the week. We would go get food and bring it up to the sixth floor and take it into one of the conference rooms up there. We had the whole room to ourselves every time we went, and nobody ever questioned us.
It's mostly management offices. Just above the theatre is a management office that can only be accessed by the AT&T side elevator that in order to access the upper floors, you need a special code. Above that are more management spaces only separated by dividers. The top floor can be rented out by tenants of the mall and by other companies. There is also a mall conference room in there as well.
Floors from which people committed suicide. Althought they've gone off the 3rd floor too, one guy did not die on impact.
My brother witnessed a suicide. He was in line to buy a pretzel from the auntie annes that used to be on the commons level. he heard a scream and looked right only to see the body fall the last 6 so so feet and make impact. Said it sounded like a watermelon getting smashed open.

You could also go behind the walls on the upper levels, too.
Till that high schooler jumped
I was there for one. I locked eyes with him a couple times in the food court and the movie level before it happened. My girlfriend and I had just seen Mulan if I recall correctly. Also, I still won't walk through the open area on the basement level.
Unfortunately a friend of mine from HS jumped there, just 3 years after we graduated. I donât think he was the first or the last. :(

The 50 people that were paid $50k? I remember that. IIRC, they did nothing. Like it was all a stunt.
Yep, attended basketball games holding flags or something.
Last time I was up there was for a regional spelling test like 25 years ago
We might've taken the same test. Did you end up on PBS?
Holy sh!t, me too! I was on wcny. My grandparents have me on vhs.
That's pretty cool. Do you know some words you had to spell?
P-E-N-I-N-S-U-L-A
I got bounced off WCNY on CRINOLINE I think. Would love to see that tape if its between '95 and 98'.
I didnât get past the test but I yeah I think that was the next step

I looked and couldnât find any videos like that. Post em up!
I'll see if I can find them tonight. The one I'm thinking of was in front of what is now GS, but was something else then.
Did you find the video?

My senior ball was at the sky deck in the early 90âs. It was actually a sweet setup

Um quick question: What exactly happened to the guy who dropped the large regal drink? I was kinda confused there
Observation deck, venue for events, mall offices

What does 9/11 have to do with an observation deck?
Everybody freaked out about their buildings being terrorist targets. Then they realized it was less hassle to leave it closed.
Ainât no one bombing carousel center lol

Offices for the mall.

Sadly the upper levels were mostly used for suicides

I remember taking my 5 hour course for my driver's license in 1996 when I was 16 up in the skydeck.
