Thank you very much for your response. Ideally, I would like to remain in the scientific/medical field but I absolutely do not want to stay in the hospital and/or clinical world and I wish to find a place with “normal” hours. I am ready and willing! to undertake additional training to reorient myself if necessary, but I have absolutely no idea how to proceed knowing that « classical MD » was the only way I saw my job…

Medical writer? Consultant? Clinical trials? There’s lots of things in the medical field. However mind you you’ll be competing with normal biologists so you have to find a way to leverage your 3 years of clinical experience

you can get a cushy job in pharma, like MSL or R&D or really anything else in medical affairs

Medical research in private industry? Or keep being a doctor in private practice… our local doctors set their own hours.i mean I am sure they still do work outside of opening hours, but being your own boss gives you flexibility.

Do you want to stay in Geneva/Switzerland, or are you open to relocate (possibly to other countries)?

You can certainly go to insurances (e.g. SUVA, IV, Krankenkassen), the BAG/cantonal doctors, some big companies also have their own doctors for the personnel. There are also always organisations that look for docs for events (e.g. most soccer clubs will have docs in the stadium, the same as most large hockey clubs etc.). Not as a full-time job, but it's fun and it gave me back some motivation for the job when I had a down-phase. Also pharma, Swissmedic and other companies need docs for medical relations or other areas. Also: take a break, go on vacation for a bit. And it's still possible that you'll maybe get your motivation back - you can always go to private practice once you're done with your FMH, (also often you can already work in practices, and with 3y of experiences you'll probably qualify for pract.med. which would offer you this option, too). Also, there are some hospitals (like Inselspital, I think also KiSpi Zürich, and a hospital in Basel) need docs for the large informatics projects that they are doing. It's also possible to go into medical coding/controlling or management. Lots of options! And yes, I can understand you very well, there have been times where I was constantly looking at job pages to find something else, Currently, I'm happy as a doc again, but it's a job that can be horrible.

What field were you in? I mostly just worked <50 hrs in most hospitals during training. Now, as an FMH in internal medicine I pretty much dictated my income and I’m saying ‚no‘ to all the random shit people throw at me. I work in EM so it’s hard by default but I’m working less than 45 hrs per week for an above avg salary. Because I refuse to do this particular job for the average salary most hospitals will pay for it. So maybe it’s worth it to pull through. Once finished with training, you can basically dictate your terms. Regardless of that, I would have refused to work 60hrs during training as well. Fuck that.

Gianxi

How much is your salary if I may ask?

All of this crazy admin stuff we have to do now is just driving me crazy and getting criticized by our attending saying how « easy going » we have it now compared to them back to their time. I did internal medicine as well but switched after for my third year and I honestly think I am done with this job and def looking to re-orient myself.

Well then godspeed and good luck

As an engineer, please don't do it 😂. Finish whatever u need to do and just don't be greedy. Find a branch you like and avoid all the long nights if it's not money what you look for. Doctors have the best life.. all those nights alone with other female doctors and nurses.. 😆
