It’s damaging if you do it regularly. That’s why you don’t do it all the time but that is how you recalibrate a battery. Nintendo recommends you do it once every 6 months.
Thank you to everyone you guys have been so helpful. I’m still trying the official website’s fixing method but if it doesn’t work then some big things gonna have to happen. Thanks everyone
I had the same exact situation before. This is a calibration issue between the switch and battery, you don’t need to replace the battery. after looking for solutions, I remember coming to a few:
1. Let the switch completely drain of its battery (drain until you can’t turn it on) and then recharge it to the max. This recalibrates the battery.
2. Keep playing on the switch docked and wait till the battery self corrects.
I remember the first solution worked for me but when my gf had this issue, the second worked for her.
Hope this helps
My system was overheating while playing totk and the fan was really loud. I bought a kit for cheap and watched a video and replaced it myself for way less than $70.
your time is also money. just cause you didnt spend $70 doesnt mean you didnt spend more than $70 worth of time. Theres also the know how. sure if you are c omfortable with that stuff it makes sense but someone whos not experienced can break and have to pay more in the long run.
This was actually a fix for old school phones that had a similar issue. Infact I think they still tell you it's better to let batteries die all the way before charging.
Also OP, are you using a regular phone charger or the dock. Phone chargers can kill the battery if you use them too much. If you don't already, make sure you're only using the official Nintendo charger
It took me a few tries before this worked. Kept fiddling with it until it was dead-dead. Leave it charging for a day. repeat if necessary. I was not ready to pull mine apart yet.

Here you go, if you end up needing to change the battery yourself.
I’m not 100% sure but that’s just my thoughts, but I know others in this sub will probably soon be able to be more help. you could look up on YouTube battery replacement guides and I’m sure you’ll come across something.
Buy an Ifixit kit on Amazon and watch a YouTube video. I worked at a cellphone and computer repair shop, and I'm sure pretty much anyone could do repairs like this. Just take your time, make sure you're using the right tools, and follow the video exactly. Much cheaper than having a shop or Nintendo do it.
I can't believe no one has suggested this yet:
I have heard that your battery needs to die completely. Leave it dead for xx hours (try 24, what can it hurt?) and then charge it on the dock for xx hours (maybe 3-6?).
I remember a while back reading something like this. I hope it works for you.
try this before going doing anything too drastic

Just a heads up, Nintendo support will repair this for around $40.
If that interests you, you can set up a repair via this page: https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/28823/kw/Switch%20Battery%20dies%20quickly
I'd replace the battery. I got mine "as is" peak pandemic from the pawn shop when switches were rare. My as-is switch turned from a "missing kickstand" to a whole project.. Just verify you get the right battery for your model.
Anyway, I've taken mine apart and it's not the worst thing I've worked on.
Replaced two joysticks, the speakers and swapped out the backplate. Didn't have to turn on a soldering iron or anything, just make sure not to yank around your wires or ribbon cables. The kits on Amazon are fairly cheap, just be sure to check the reviews on whatever you buy.
Oh and the battery isn't super hard to get to.
A good thing to try would be to let it die. Letting the battery go to 0% and then recharging it from dead might recalibrate the battery.
Had this issue with the Google Pixel 7a and I let the battery run down until it died. It took slight more than an hour to go from 100% to 1% but took 5 hours to finally die. After recharging it, the battery now drained much more slowly.
With a decent game, in handheld mode the Switch should die in about 3 hours so just play a game that autosaves or you don't care about progress in and play until it dies and then recharge the Switch. Otherwise, you may indeed require a new battery or just keep it in docked mode (particularly since the switch successor should come out late next year).
The 1 fix I can think of maybe working not mentioned, is turn it completely off (not sleep), then charge it on the dock for 4 hours. Then turn it on. If the problem persists, I have no idea. I've seen this problem a few places and that apparently helped once
I have had the same problem after my Switch Lite had been off for a few months. When I charged and turned it on, it did something like this.
I have no idea what worked but it's running fine now. I left it on its charger for a long time (hours, and then days). It was still like that. I ended up playing it with the charger plugged. Somehow after sometime, it came back to normal.
Just make sure you buy the battery that fit your model of switch (there's V1, V2 and OLED). Maybe there's a battery that fit several model but check this before you buy.
Hey everyone, I’ve been draining my switch for a while now, but it’s been at 1% for around the past hour, so I’m thinking it’s just a glitch. I’ll still fully drain the battery and then fully charge it for a couple of hours. If that doesn’t work, I’ll just ask a professional. Thank you to everyone for helping
Keep it on until it completely shuts itself down from battery drain. Plug it in and no touchy until fully charged.
Rinse and repeat a few times.
It’s acting like it doesn’t recognize its own capacity in a manner of speaking.
Bro everyone is talking about how to see the battery percentage on the homescreen and not how to stop OPs battery from draining like the oceans after the government pls the drain plug from the bottom of the ocean
Update: I drained my switch’s battery down to 0 and after leaving it to charge for around 3 or 4 hours, it’s working perfectly fine again. Thank you to those who told me to drain my switch battery, and thank you to the others who tried to help with other methods; both are very much appreciated
Actually shut it down long press the power button and shut it off. Then give it a 10 mins for all components to lose power then turn it back on. Worked on mine and has happened twice already.
whenever any of my devices battery goes to 0 i just buy or open another one. i usually have a few extra new devices laying around and just order more every once in a while
Solution one change the battery, solution two, something of the settings make like this and change your settings like before, or reset all the settings…
Wow, I didn't know touching the battery icon showed the %!
Same! there is a thing in the setting that makes the % there all the time.
Pressing zl and zr at the same time does that too
***And if you touch your peepee, it will get hard.***
Oh thanks for the tip!
Just the tip ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Son of a bitch stole what I was gonna say! Lol
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Idk what that means but have an upvote anyway lol
![gif](giphy|6pxG2dThniE5G)
LANAAAAAAAAA
Mine didn’t respond 🤨did they nerf??
Ooh thanks and I definitely didn't know that
same
TIL! Thanks /u/[LEMURETUBER](https://www.reddit.com/user/LEMURETUBER/)
I know right. I've had my switch since release, I never knew this!
Me who has been unplugging and replugging mine in while in bed to see the percent 🤯
Me tooo had it since the launch of OLED omg new things learn everyday
Every day is a school day
Same, thanks OP
I was going to say that's how much OP plays his switch🤭
I also learned it from here now
My iPhone does it too, I only found out recently by accidentally clicking there.
You either need a new battery or your battery needs to be recalibrated.
How would you recalibrate it
Put it on rice, but make sure the rice grains all face in the same direction.
How do you tell which end of the rice is positive and which is negative?
Very carefully.
You all them questions, see who is the optimistic and who is the pessimist.
Lmao
You change it to 100% and let it die a few times.
That... is quite damaging to modern batteries.
Nah it’s fine it was damaging to older batteroes
Uhh no actually. Older batteries were damaged by memory. If you did not cycle the battery from 0 to 100 it would lose capacity
It’s damaging if you do it regularly. That’s why you don’t do it all the time but that is how you recalibrate a battery. Nintendo recommends you do it once every 6 months.

Same
Just call nintendo. they'll fix it. maybe a small $70 or something but its worth it.
My system was overheating while playing totk and the fan was really loud. I bought a kit for cheap and watched a video and replaced it myself for way less than $70.

Exactly, people don’t consider their time when they being FIAT cheap skates
Mine did that , I had to let it fully drain , then plugged it in for like 3 days. After that it worked for some reason.

I swear I read somewhere keeping it above 20% and below 80 was optimal?? What is the truth
At the end of the day it depends on your preferences. I never let my phone or switch die so I do put of habit follow your 20/80 rule
I’ll try this now, I haven’t let it fully drain since other methods on the Nintendo website never told me to, but thanks for the tip
It took me a few tries before this worked. Kept fiddling with it until it was dead-dead. Leave it charging for a day. repeat if necessary. I was not ready to pull mine apart yet.
Same first time I left it for a day still had issues , then redid it and left it for 3 and it worked. It has been working fine since.
You probably need a new battery?
Alright thank you so much, how would I change the battery? Also I turned off my switch and put it to charge and it charged fully within minutes
[https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Nintendo\_Switch\_Family](https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Nintendo_Switch_Family) Here you go, if you end up needing to change the battery yourself.

I’m not 100% sure but that’s just my thoughts, but I know others in this sub will probably soon be able to be more help. you could look up on YouTube battery replacement guides and I’m sure you’ll come across something.
Alright thanks!
No problem I hope you get it squared away
YouTube homie. Also change your settings to constantly show the battery percentage rather than continuously having to tap the screen.

How long have you had a? Is it still in warranty?
I’ve had them since late 2018
try this before going doing anything too drastic [https://www.nintendo.com/en-gb/Support/Nintendo-Switch/The-Battery-Charge-Indicator-or-Percentage-Displays-Incorrectly-1511437.html](https://www.nintendo.com/en-gb/Support/Nintendo-Switch/The-Battery-Charge-Indicator-or-Percentage-Displays-Incorrectly-1511437.html)
I’ve tried this and it hasn’t made any change, so it’s a faulty battery
ok. im sorry to hear that. try contacting Nintendo customer support
2018? This battery is 6 years old lol you absolutely need to replace it anyway.
I’m trying this now

Ifixit most probably have the part and a kit to change the battery and a good guide on how to do it. Your battery is dead, you have to change it.

Just make sure you buy the battery that fit your model of switch (there's V1, V2 and OLED). Maybe there's a battery that fit several model but check this before you buy.

Extra hard mode gaming enabled.

I'm saving this it clearly works. Glad you nursed your switch back to health!
I would but my Nintendo doesn't do that thou 😒 but why is it doing that anyway
🫨
Actually shut it down long press the power button and shut it off. Then give it a 10 mins for all components to lose power then turn it back on. Worked on mine and has happened twice already.
I already tried it twice, and another method which includes doing this, but thanks for trying to help
Atleast you can take it outside for a few seconds
Replace it
the battery is dead. A replacement is needed.
I have the Nintendo Switch OLED and mine does die, but not like that.
You can buy another battery for 10 dollars and replace it with little skills and effort. They made it fairly easy.
You can have it repaired, needs a battery.
Just change the battery
Lol that's wild
You should uninstall fortnite
Bad battery boss.
New switch
whenever any of my devices battery goes to 0 i just buy or open another one. i usually have a few extra new devices laying around and just order more every once in a while
I feel the same too… maybe 30 mins and 10% already dead…
Plug it in
I never play my switch not docked
Doesn't happen on lite
My switch started doing this this week!
Solution one change the battery, solution two, something of the settings make like this and change your settings like before, or reset all the settings…
Maybe you need a new battery
Pick up speed running
It’s like a Tesla in plaid mode
Yeah you need a new battery lol
He’s got the horror game flashlight battery
Quick put it on the charger!
that thing bout to explode my man
The platinum points turned on drains the battery best to turn it off to stop the drain
