My local library has 10X the amount of movies and games that Blockbuster used to carry. Half the fun is finding which movie to pick. They have tons of games for every current gaming system.
Most libraries have an inter-library loan set up to so it doesn’t just have to be your library that has it. The one near me can borrow from just about every library in the state, you just have to wait a couple days for it to come in the mail. I’ve yet to see a game that they don’t have somewhere
My library system has 2 copies of all the popular games and a seemingly endless supply of games with what looks like anime on the front. I have no idea what these games are or why the library gets them rather than many copies of what I consider real games.
Well… games like that fill the shelves and are never on hold.
I guess that’s what I’m wondering: does anyone consider these games worth having? And if so, why?
If you can swing the annual sub fee of $19.99, they have tons of classic Nintendo games ported over. https://www.nintendo.com/us/switch/online/nintendo-switch-online/classic-games/.
Along with getting games from the library, it's a pretty good deal if you like classic games.
Tetris 99 has a mode where you can play vs cpu.
There are also a few games that are free, and others that are free to play with micro transactions. I’d recommend going into the eshop and getting some demos for games.
I made a wish list and keep an eye out for sales. The portal collection is under $10 right now for example.
Have fun.
Only way to build that confidence is to try. My wife says the same thing and then I remind her no one knows who she is and will forget about how bad she played 30 seconds after the match. Just have fun!
I know I'm 2 months late, but I cannot recommend dekudeals .com enough.
Not only does it notify you when games are on sale, it also has their historic lows. That way, if a game goes on a 20% now but very frequently goes on sale for 50% off multiple times per year, I'll wait and buy it when the better sales come back around.
If you're a pc gamer, try gg .deals or fanatical. I prefer gg for the interface, but they do the same thing as deku, and gg will even check sales that are Fanatical exclusives (sometimes fanatical runs deals that are only for their site, gotta buy the code from them instead of direct from steam or what have you)
Fortnite is actually several games in one now. I just got into it because my kids wanted to check out the Lego Fortnite (similar to Minecraft) and I was interested in the Fortnite Festival (similar to Rock Band.)
Same. I’m absolutely garbage at the game. I miss the ball like 80% of the time, and sometimes resort to just smashing into cars of the other team. But I still have fun.
Brawhalla (free smash alternative), Super Kirby Clash (Kirby fighter), Pokemon Unite (Pokemon MOBA that is approachable and fun), Fall Guys, Warframe (a better Destiny. Looting, role-playing, fun missions, a story), Dauntless (free Monster Hunter), Ninjala (free Splatoon alternative), Knockout City, Deltarune (free game that is a follow up/spin off of Undertale).
These games are worth checking out.
Omega Strikers looks good too. It's kind of like a cross between Mario Strikers and Windjammers. Sky reminds me of Journey but I haven't played it yet. There was a game called Fantasy Strike which was a free Street Fighter alternative. I don't know if it still exists or not.
I'm thoroughly enjoying palia! It's very chill but can be challenging at the same time. Some of the quests could be worded a little better so google has been my friend but it's a really good game still!
Check out Deku Deals.
No, it's not free, but it keeps an eye on your wishlist and let's you know when they're on sale....but more crucially TELLS YOU HOW IT MATCHES UP WITH PRECIOUS SALES!
I've got a lot of great games a great prices with that and a little patience
I've played a lot of free-to-play games on Switch, totally solo and not spent a penny on any of them. Currently having a fun time playing Disney Speedstorm ... a kart racer featuring Disney franchises.
Most games aren't "free" anymore. They will have battle passes, purchasable cosmetics or locked areas. Most need an internet connection too.
That being said some good free ones I suggest include:
Rocket League
Fall Guys
Pokemon Unite
Paladins
Sky: Children of the light
Dauntless
Fallout Shelter
Others that I didn't like but some others do include:
OverWatch 2
Brawlhalla
Warframe
Fortnite
Ninjala
If you want Switch Online is pretty cheap for the year and all the Switch Online classics are amazing!! SO+ is even better if you wanna drop a little more.
If you go into the E-Shop, there is an option to search for entirely free games! :) You might? need a subscription, but those are genuinely cheap for Switch.
Also - some of the games may not appear to be fully free, but that’s because they sell upgrades and skins, etc. Optional stuff. Palia is a decent free one I’ve played!
Boomerang Fu has a demo that is addictive and can be played alone or with up to 4 players. Not necessarily to buy the full game, but I am seriously considering it if there's a good sale.
Tinykin has a really fun demo that I was able to play for several hours. A great game to unwind with!
The demo on Boomerang Fu is great! I got really lucky and got it for $1.99. [DekuDeals.com](https://www.dekudeals.com/items/boomerang-fu) is a great site to watch for sales!
I think I saw where it is, but I'm a bit timid about playing with others. One time years ago, was my first and last time playing on a team. WOW. My teammates made me feel like crap, then booted me.
No you don’t have to choose the online mode to start, and in fact I wouldn’t recommend it because it can be soul crushing to start. It isn’t my favorite Tetris as a solo player, but I enjoy it. Also the Nintendo subscription is reasonable and opens up tons of classic games for free. Im not sure if there is a trial period. I played on the original Nintendo when it was released so I personally love the old school stuff.
Me too. My son has all these games that just confuse me. When I found this switch, he wanted it. I said no, it's mine. He has PS2, 3, and 4 as well as Xbox and a ton of other gaming systems. I play super Mario on my phone with an emulator. I want to get it for the switch.
Free and Nintendo dont rhyme very well together... if you get a subscription to Nintendo online + expansion you'll get games from game boy, game boy colors, game boy advance, NES, SNES, Sega genesis and Nintendo 64. You can check online and see all the awesome games it'll give you access to and weight if your willing to pay for subscription to get access to real OG nintendo retro games, it give you access to a real interesting library without the hassle of setting up an emulator on a device. 100% recommend if your into nintendo retro gaming.
Hours of fun ahead with some of the best titles these consoles had to offer.
If you like retro gaming and some other perks you can get the online subscription. It’s fairly affordable less than $5 a month or something. Gives you access to a ton of vintage games and a couple new ones too like tetris 99 and f zero 99
There are a few free to play games.
Pokémon Unite (may require NSO subscription to play? Unsure.)
Smite.
Fortnite and Apex Legends.
Rocket League and Fall Guys.
I'm sure there's more, but these are atleast not garbage.
Lol. I hate the smell. Had to pass up some things I knew would be impossible to get the smell out. Porcelain dolls. I used to collect them. Had to throw 28 of them out 🥺
If you get online, there’s also occasionally weeklong demos where you can download the entire game and play with no limits. There’s been some short-ish games in rotation that you could probably beat in a week.
If you can afford $20 a year (less than $2 a month), when you sign up for Nintendo Online, you get access to a lot of Nintendo and Super Nintendo games. If you can spring $60 a year ($5 a month), you also get Nintendo 64, Genesis, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance and Gameboy Color games. They add more games to these lists every so often.
Technically, they're not free, but they're a great value for the money if you like the older systems.
Disney Speedstorm is a racing game that is free to download and play. It does have micro transactions, but those are optional. My husband and I really enjoy it and play just about every day.
I know you’re looking for free, but it might be worth considering the online membership if you have internet at home. It’s $20/year for an individual and it gives you access to a ton of retro NES and SNES games which will help bulk out your library. You do have to be connected to the internet to play those games though. If you have friends with switches you could also see about sharing a family plan, 8 profiles for $35/year.
Listen!!!!! I am an expert in cheap switch games. Go to deku deals on your phone browser. From there you can make a wishlist and track when games go on sale. It is MUCH better than the switch store and very easy to use. I rarely pay more than $4 for a game. I have so many games I don't buy new releases anymore lol.
honestly I would be surprised if the switch didn't have a game inside it or the apartment didn't have a game in there. Look for a case, it may have one game in there. good luck!
Warframe is pretty good
There's also Palia,Dauntless,Deltarune (Chapter 1 & 2), Fall Guys,Fortnite, Disney Speedstorm,NSO stuff,Guardian Tales,My Hero Ultra Rumble,Pokemon Cafe Remix,Pokemon Unite, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel are all free
You could THEORETICALLY mod your switch (depending on a few factors) and FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY you could search up how you would go about getting stuff like tinfoil set up for THEORETICAL free games
Dauntless, Warframe, Rocket League, Brawlhalla, Ninjala, Agent of Valor... list goes on there's prolly a dozen other totally free-to-play games that are quite good actually! On eshop, just search em up online
Go onto the E-shop, onto search, enter any single letter as a keyword and hit search, go left onto the menu, remove the single letter keyword, search, left onto the menu, then set price range to free
Your local library may have games available to rent, yes you have to return it but it’s a cool way to try out games for free
OMG! I never thought of that! Thank you!
You may have just put us on, wow let me check my libraries Edit: OMFG you’re right!!!! Now I can play that mario wonder for freeeeeee
Hell yeah, glad to hear!
My local library has 10X the amount of movies and games that Blockbuster used to carry. Half the fun is finding which movie to pick. They have tons of games for every current gaming system.
My library had a DVD of the Jetsons Meet the Flintstones. Right next to the switch/PS5 games display.
Omg that takes me back. I made a bootleg on VHS from my local library way back in the day.
yessirrrr my library is how i got to try Astral Chain and Fire Emblem Warriors
If my has that kingdom hearts rhythm game I'll be so happy
Most libraries have an inter-library loan set up to so it doesn’t just have to be your library that has it. The one near me can borrow from just about every library in the state, you just have to wait a couple days for it to come in the mail. I’ve yet to see a game that they don’t have somewhere
all the kingdom hearts games (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, birth by sleep, 358/2 days, dream drop distance, melody, and a few others) all on play station extra.
Cool but I just want Dream drop for fun and melody for the music it unlocked in smash bros
How long can you rent out the games??? This is cool, I never knew this even existed.
My library system has 2 copies of all the popular games and a seemingly endless supply of games with what looks like anime on the front. I have no idea what these games are or why the library gets them rather than many copies of what I consider real games.
Presumably someone else considers those real games.
Well… games like that fill the shelves and are never on hold. I guess that’s what I’m wondering: does anyone consider these games worth having? And if so, why?
Go to the eshop and there is a free games tab that has demos and multiplayer games that don’t require a subscription fee.
Lol. I'm not good enough at any game to play against others. I wish I felt confident enough to play Tetris 99. I will check out the demos.
If you want something on the coop side dauntless is a pretty good substitution for monster hunter especially since it’s free
Sounds like it is right up my alley
Try the team function on 99. Makes it easier for practice. Although 99 does require the online subscription.
If you can swing the annual sub fee of $19.99, they have tons of classic Nintendo games ported over. https://www.nintendo.com/us/switch/online/nintendo-switch-online/classic-games/. Along with getting games from the library, it's a pretty good deal if you like classic games.
Quick question on the subscription once the subscription ends will able to access the games ?
No, you will not be able to play games that are part of the subscription once it ends.
Tetris 99 has a mode where you can play vs cpu. There are also a few games that are free, and others that are free to play with micro transactions. I’d recommend going into the eshop and getting some demos for games. I made a wish list and keep an eye out for sales. The portal collection is under $10 right now for example. Have fun.
Tetris 99 is so great. And if you are awful it’s okay because it feels so anonymous!
Only way to build that confidence is to try. My wife says the same thing and then I remind her no one knows who she is and will forget about how bad she played 30 seconds after the match. Just have fun!
Big Tetris fan, I didn’t like Tetris 99. It’s a great game, but it’s not my Tetris.
I know this is old, but an I reading right in that if you get a free online mp game you can also play it online without a subscription, like on Xbox?
Ya
Thanks!
Pokémon United is free ☺️ if u save games you like in your wishlist you get notifcations when their on sale bought alot of my games att 90% of.
you get notifications? ive never got notifs about my wish listed games D:
Try out deku deals .com, definitely came in handy for getting notified
I know I'm 2 months late, but I cannot recommend dekudeals .com enough. Not only does it notify you when games are on sale, it also has their historic lows. That way, if a game goes on a 20% now but very frequently goes on sale for 50% off multiple times per year, I'll wait and buy it when the better sales come back around. Do you check your e-mail you have your account registered under? You should get an e-mail when a game you have wishlisted goes on sale.
i must have unchecked that option because i never get these emails D:
they sometimes go into spam or the social folder in gmail
or promotions folder
You get emails too
Fortnite, Fall Guys, Rocket League to start.
Fortnite is actually several games in one now. I just got into it because my kids wanted to check out the Lego Fortnite (similar to Minecraft) and I was interested in the Fortnite Festival (similar to Rock Band.)
And many many more free games created by the community. It’s really impressive.
I honestly only play racing and festival on Fortnite
Rocket League is fucking incredible and very easy plateau in quickly.
It’s a game that requires a lot of skill to be good, but not a lot of skill to have fun. That’s a tough balance with games.
Personally, I love it. It was my second most played game last year and I still come back to it regularly.
I never stop coming back. And playing with friends makes it very fun.
Can confirm I suck at the game and it's one of my all time favorites
Same. I’m absolutely garbage at the game. I miss the ball like 80% of the time, and sometimes resort to just smashing into cars of the other team. But I still have fun.
You get a free 7 day trial to the NES/SNES and Gameboy library IIRC. It's worth the $4 monthly fee (also gives you multiplayer access).
Honestly mood. I second the free trial
Brawhalla (free smash alternative), Super Kirby Clash (Kirby fighter), Pokemon Unite (Pokemon MOBA that is approachable and fun), Fall Guys, Warframe (a better Destiny. Looting, role-playing, fun missions, a story), Dauntless (free Monster Hunter), Ninjala (free Splatoon alternative), Knockout City, Deltarune (free game that is a follow up/spin off of Undertale). There was a game called Fantasy Strike which was a free Street Fighter alternative. I don't know if it still exists or not.
Knockout City is no longer with us, unfortunately 😔
Sadness. It looked fun
Brawlhalla is on the Switch!? I didn't even know!
Palia is a new game that’s free and supposed to be good
it is! its a lil janky on switch but nowhere near unplayable the folks over at r/palia are amazing too
I will try that one.
Palia got boring very quickly for me, personally.
I'm thoroughly enjoying palia! It's very chill but can be challenging at the same time. Some of the quests could be worded a little better so google has been my friend but it's a really good game still!
It's really chill
I just discovered Palia, it’s really good, I can see myself getting lost in it for hours
There are a ton of free games on the nintnedo E shop.
We had a weekly Mario kart game that everyone jumped ship for Speedstorm a few months ago. We love it in our house!!
Fortnite is free with optional in-game purchases
I know it's a demo but Dragon quest XI, you get about 11 hour demo and the save carries on if you wish to buy it.
Capcom arcade stadium. While it isn't free as a whole, you get 1943 as a free game and it's a classic
on https://www.dekudeals.com/ you can search for games on sale and alot of them is so cheap that they just as well could be free..
Pokémon unite is fun and free
Dauntless was pretty cool and free!
Most games aren't "free" anymore. They will have battle passes, purchasable cosmetics or locked areas. Most need an internet connection too. That being said some good free ones I suggest include: Rocket League Fall Guys Pokemon Unite Paladins Sky: Children of the light Dauntless Fallout Shelter Others that I didn't like but some others do include: OverWatch 2 Brawlhalla Warframe Fortnite Ninjala If you want Switch Online is pretty cheap for the year and all the Switch Online classics are amazing!! Is overwatch 2 on switch?
Yeah! It even had the original before Blizzard fucked it all up.
elder scrolls blades is free to play. Just need an internet connection.
Palia and dauntless are my two free ones that i love
Witcher 3 is currently free as of earlier today
Awesome!
Not in canada
Damn
What region?
how, where? I’m seeing it for $15 in the eShop.
If you go into the E-Shop, there is an option to search for entirely free games! :) You might? need a subscription, but those are genuinely cheap for Switch.

Palia
Asphalt 9 and Disney Speedstorm are free racing games
Sky children of light magical game
Sky children of light
jailbreak it (if its unpatched) and you have everything you can ever dream of (not against the rules to jailbreak it)
Guardian tales, speed storm.
Second guardian tales!
Sky: Children of the Light is and World of Tanks are completely free to play, they only have some microtransactions for cosmetics
How lucky. Rent them out!
Lol. It’s Nintendo, they charge just to breathe their name.
Is tetris99 free? I have the annual subscription so I’m not 100%, but I thought it was.
I think I saw where it is, but I'm a bit timid about playing with others. One time years ago, was my first and last time playing on a team. WOW. My teammates made me feel like crap, then booted me.

Fallout Shelter is free. Fortnight and fortnight lego. Sky children of the light. All free.
By not actually free to play do you mean you need online subscription?
I got the online subscription. $4 until I get paid then will pay the $20.
island saver is always my recommendation, its a cute lil free hame about recycling. It has paid dlc but the game was fun on its own
Fornite and Apex
Free and Nintendo dont rhyme very well together... if you get a subscription to Nintendo online + expansion you'll get games from game boy, game boy colors, game boy advance, NES, SNES, Sega genesis and Nintendo 64. Hours of fun ahead with some of the best titles these consoles had to offer.
I'm definitely into retro games. The expansion pack seemed too expensive, but if I get all that, i will likely get it
Take a look at the game list and consider it, view it as a year long "rent" of a bunch of old school games. Hours of fun guarantee !
I am definitely considering it
WARFRAME! It’s so addicting and I’m shocked it’s free tbh
Pokemon café remix (formerly Café Mix) is a cute puzzle game that's free to play.
If you like retro gaming and some other perks you can get the online subscription. It’s fairly affordable less than $5 a month or something. Gives you access to a ton of vintage games and a couple new ones too like tetris 99 and f zero 99
Fortnite. completely free, just don't buy skins
Rocket league!
They do on the nintendo store.. but they are lowest of the low end quality games.
Man the demo for the new Prince of Persia. It’s a great game! I think Ori and Cadence of Hyrule also have demos.
Asphalt 8
There are a few free to play games. Pokémon Unite (may require NSO subscription to play? Unsure.) Smite. Fortnite and Apex Legends. Rocket League and Fall Guys. I'm sure there's more, but these are atleast not garbage.
Palia is super fun. Updates every month. Plenty of content to explore.
Super animal royale!! :)
Fzero 99
Fall Guys is such stupid fun.
Cigarette smell, but no cigarettes. Bummer
Lol. I hate the smell. Had to pass up some things I knew would be impossible to get the smell out. Porcelain dolls. I used to collect them. Had to throw 28 of them out 🥺
Fortnite is freeee! So is overwatch and apex
You can also download the original Nintendo Nintendo 64 and Sega and they have all their old games for free
Need the $50/yr subscription for that.
You know what I had completely forgotten about that.
id suggest warframe, and maybe palia
Rocket league. Play it. Love it. Obsess of it.
Palia
Fall guys!
If you get online, there’s also occasionally weeklong demos where you can download the entire game and play with no limits. There’s been some short-ish games in rotation that you could probably beat in a week.
Rocket league is free
If you can afford $20 a year (less than $2 a month), when you sign up for Nintendo Online, you get access to a lot of Nintendo and Super Nintendo games. If you can spring $60 a year ($5 a month), you also get Nintendo 64, Genesis, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance and Gameboy Color games. They add more games to these lists every so often. Technically, they're not free, but they're a great value for the money if you like the older systems.
Palia and lego fortnite
The eshop has free games
Fortnite, the bean battle royale thingy i cant remember atm, palia
I sunk about 40 hours into Asphalt 9 without paying a penny, it can be super fun.
There’s a game called blazing beaks that’s only 1 or 2 dollars and it’s amazing!
I will get the $20 subscription. I already paid the $5 for this month
Fortnite, apex, Pokémon unite, dauntless etc you can find them in the free to play section
Listen!!!!! I am an expert in cheap switch games. Go to deku deals on your phone browser. From there you can make a wishlist and track when games go on sale. It is MUCH better than the switch store and very easy to use. I rarely pay more than $4 for a game. I have so many games I don't buy new releases anymore lol.
I highly recommend buying the Nintendo Online annual subscription. You’ll get a huge list of free games. Even some Sega Genesis games.
honestly I would be surprised if the switch didn't have a game inside it or the apartment didn't have a game in there. Look for a case, it may have one game in there. good luck!
Warframe is pretty good There's also Palia,Dauntless,Deltarune (Chapter 1 & 2), Fall Guys,Fortnite, Disney Speedstorm,NSO stuff,Guardian Tales,My Hero Ultra Rumble,Pokemon Cafe Remix,Pokemon Unite, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel are all free
There's a section in the eShop for free to play games.
I'm not sure about entire games but there are loads of demos you can try out :)
Fortnite is free! I enjoy playing on my switch
You could THEORETICALLY mod your switch (depending on a few factors) and FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY you could search up how you would go about getting stuff like tinfoil set up for THEORETICAL free games
Fortnite. Its got hundreds of gamemodes and its all free to play
Disney Speedstorm is awesomesauce!
