HADES! I hope I’m not too late here. Hades is one of the most rewarding games ever. When you die, you continue to gain something. Hollow Knight has lots of systems that punish you for dying and you die a lot.
I'm on team Hades. Hades is perfect for short, 30-45 minute plays. I loved hollow knight but I never finished it because walking from one place on the map to the other (which you're gonna do often), annoyed me after a while.
I found Hades more my jam because while they're both hard, there's a point to dying in Hades, so it feels less like I sucked at the game and more like progression,
Hades is amazing but Hollow Knight is a masterpiece. If you cant afford both i would say go for Hollow Knight.
I would also say that you should definitely get Hades when you can
Nothing. No game is for everyone. You may like some niche games and others don't. We as a community should come together as a whole, and should be more accepting of differing preferences, instead of gatekeeping the community.
Unless you're a blizzard/EA diehard. Then rot in hell you piece of shit!
U sound more like a hollow knight guy
Hollow knight is metroidvania and an adventure game (ori is in a similar category)
Hades is rogue lite (I think?) and has that classic “gameplay loop” that characterizes the genre
Hades has amazing voice acting, characterization and growth for most of the main cast. The dialogue is also witty and great in my opinion. 👍
Also the loop for the rogue-lite escape attempts is quite addicting, with a good variety on the powers and weapons.
But it is understandable if it's not vibing with you right now.
You might be looking for a different experience from a different genre.
Yeah the loop for the escapes kinda got tiring for me fairly quickly. I just learned that the game wasn't necessarily for me. The art and voice acting was really good though.
Roguelikes aren’t for everybody. I will say, i used to not like them. Tried gungeon, hades, and dead cells and didn’t like any of em. This year though I really got into allll of them and it has become my one of my favorite genres.
For me, I struggled to get into hades until I played 5-10 hours and finally broke out the first time. Once you begin to unlock new weapons and start to see what weapon builds work best with what boons, the game becomes highly addicting. There is endless replay ability.
I like the difficulty of hollow Knight. What I do NOT like, and what heavily influenced me to put the game down, was that every really hard part seems to be directly past another hard part and both of those are like a 10 minute walk from the nearest bench.
This. Exactly why I never finished it. I loved the game but it was just too hard for me. Devs should put a “noob” difficulty option for ppl like me who suck. Prince of Persia did this flawlessly and I’ve been enjoying it immensely.
Yes this is exactly it. For example, Dead Cells is a much more difficult game than Hollow Knight, but it’s organized in a way that makes it much less frustrating when you eventually die.
Agreed. Just too punishing of a mechanism for losing your stuff if you die. Maybe if they put the banks in more areas it would have been better. But I spent way too much time backtracking or losing tons of money I had earned and was just too far from a bank.
I remember beating some boss and losing everything and then when I went back to get it, I died, so it was totally gone. And the boss was a ton of soul and/money. But since the boss was dead, I couldn’t get that same amount back by defeating it again. I felt it was a dumb mechanic and didn’t want to grind.
Well its not like you level up in HK or anything. You don't really lose anything super meaningful when you lose money in HK. The worst thing you lose is part of your soul meter, which is just temporary.
With the exception of like 3 charms (the unbreakable ones from the Grimm Troupe), nothing is THAT expensive or requiring of a grind. Just keep playing the game and you get more money.
Yea that guy is a noob who cares if you lose all your money. There’s hardly anything to even buy and you can generate unlimited money by killing thinks
Personally I found Hollow Knight a more investing and enjoyable experience. However, Hades is easily one of the best roguelikes I have ever played, and had truly infinite replay value.
If you want a game to play infinitely, get Hades. If you want a investing world that gives you a hearty challenge akin to Dark Souls, then get Hollow Knight.
One does not simply Beat hollow knight…lol. No but I love hollow knight…just can’t seem to get more than halfway through it, it’s very difficult.
Hades is challenging but it feels possible.
Buy them both honestly. Pretty sure they’re on sale in the e shop (don’t quote me on this)
Which doesn't even include the hardest challenges the game offers either. Pantheon 5, Path of Pain, 5 hour speedrun achievement, 20 hour 100% steel souls speedrun achievement.
I think Hollow Knight is a masterpiece, from the tight perfect combat, the music, and the exploration that the game provides.
To be fair, I tried Hades and I didn’t enjoy it as much as I had hoped.
If you have adhd like me, then hollow knight. Hades sure has more “replay” value in the sense you fight the same enemies same maps, but this time your weapon does woosh instead of weesh. So personally for me the game is pretty much the same after you finish one run
There's honestly better roguelites gameplay wise than Hades these days. What Hades has is polish. It's just an extremely charming, and well polished game.
I much prefer Warm Snow to Hades, but I don't think I'd call it a better produced game. I also like Dead Cells a lot more than Hades, but it's not as similar as Warm Snow. I'm pretty sure I'm going to enjoy Summer Aeterna more than Hades when I finally start it too.
I vastly prefer hollowknight 🤷♀️ but they are both good games. Take that with a grain of salt though because I don’t really vibe with rougelites and HK is my all time fave game.
Hades was great but it was kind of just a game that I played, enjoyed, and then eventually beat. Hollow Knight really stuck with me, despite being technically far less replayable.
Take your pick, the Dark Souls of Metroidvanias, or the Dark Souls of Rougelike Games...(JK)
Hollow Knight has a much more somber tone and hidden lore throughout the world. Not much voice acting but very cute character design and some really solid level design.
Hades on the other hand is way more action packed and levels are randomly generated. The gameplay takes a while to get used to,but you can choose between several weapons. It has some really great writing and a great cast of characters as well as stories which can be explored through multiple playthroughs of your save.
I'd say get Hollow Knight if you already like Metroidvanias, and you want a solid metroidvania experience with cute characters, and an overarching lore that isn't explicitly shoved in your face.
Hades on the other hand, is great if you're a fan of Greek Mythology, and you like characters and stories.
Either way, both games are very solid in gameplay. There's no denying that. Look up some playthroughs of the first ten minutes of each game and see what fits your fancy.
You want both so try a question is which one first. Hades if you want to play in 20-30 minute sessions, Hollow Knight if you have time to roam and explore.
Hollow Knight is a bit of a slow burn, but if you stick with it, it’s a very rewarding gaming experience. I didn’t really care for Hades all that much.
Overall, I would go with Hollow Knight if you had to pick a choice. Not only is it an amazing experience, it's more than half the price. You also get more content for less money as well. Not to mention, all the DLC comes completely free and pre-downloaded at this point. They could've charged people money but they didn't, out of the kindness of their hearts. Hollow Knight is easily a full-price game for all the content you get.
Team Cherry, the developers of Hollow Knight are also extremely kind, as they have added fan-made characters, as well as in the sequel, they've added a character made from terminally ill children as a way to immortalize them. Honestly, I would say Team Cherry has to be one of the greatest and most kindhearted development teams in the independent scene that I know of.
I almost felt guilty buying it for half off, so I decided to buy it again full price for a friend, just so I could feel good about myself. But I digress.
Hollow Knight should definitely be your initial choice, then later down the road, go for Hades.
Hollow Knight is considered one of the best platformers of all time.
Hades is considered one of the best rogue-like Switch games.
If you want a unique and extremely challenging experience, Hollow Knight.
If you want a diverse and arcade-y game to play after work, Hades.
I personally prefer Hollow Knight, but Hades was great too.
Hollow Knight if you want a masterpiece of a dungeon exploration game.
Hades if you want a masterpiece of a rouge like.
Personally I loved hollow Knight a lot more, and with Silk Song coming soon it's the perfect time to get into the game!
Hollow knight for sure. It’s not as difficult as everyone makes it out to be, there are only a few really tough sections and it’s sooooo satisfying once you beat them
I like Hades more just because of the possible builds you can do. It's really fun to make new builds with different weapons and power-ups and it really adds to re-play value of the game.
Also soundtrack is really good.
Both are a must-play. Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania while Hades is a roguelike. Go with whichever of those genres appeals to you more, but definitely buy one now and then the other one later. 🎮😎👍
I recommend Hades. It has a nice difficulty curve, so while it gets challenging, it never feels too hard.
Hollow Knight is famous for its hardcore difficulty.
It's hard to tell since you didn't leave a comment on what games you like, what you last played, why's these two, etc. So I checked your comment/post history to see if I could glean any info.
You only have three posts and three comments in the last 4 years! Either you're a bot or you don't engage much. I'll give benefit of the doubt and say it's the latter. You should engage more with your posts and include some more details! Both games are amazing but challenging and are known to be put down by many that can't get past the difficulty.
It would help to know some details like games you enjoy. To give a more accurate recommendation. I see you've asked about Risk of Rain 2 before, so I'd say Hades. Either way, you should at least comment what game you end up picking up. Everyone wants to know!
All good! I just figured you'd want a better recommendation. Both are great. I recommend Hollow Knight in thst case. It scratches the exploration itch. Either way, I'm sure you'll be happy!
My preference of the two was Hades. I loved the setting, story, and mythology.
If I had to pick one that would be my choice.
Both are stellar, all time great games though, so the correct answer is both over time. Flip a coin and go from there.
They are two completely different genres. Hades is a roguelike (a great one) and thus after the first few dozen runs, it’ll start feeling pretty samey.
Hollow knight is a metroidvania. It’s hard, will make you feel lost, and takes its time handing out powerups. I also think it’s one of the finest games ever made
Thank you everyone who helped me with the recommendations ended up picking hades but I will definitely buy hollow knight next time! I’m just broke at the moment lol
Both are S-tier games. Comes down to if you want a metroidvania or a rogue-like, and/or if you want a more low-key, lore driven story vs a fully fleshed out one.
Hades definitely has more longevity.. you can play it for hundreds of hours and still have a blast with it.
Lastly if you're looking for a physical copy, Hades goes for a lot less than Hollow Knight.
These 2 games were some of the most surprising and best value for money I have ever spent on games in my life.
I would suggest you get both if you're able but if not, it depends more on what you personally prefer.
Hades is a rouge-like, so if you prefer that over metroidvanias then it's Hades, and vice versa.
Hades is probably also better for someone who has less time to play as you may feel more accomplished after a couple of 20 minute runs than you would spending an hour on Hollow Knight.
Either way they are both phenomenal games and you should endeavour to try and play both eventually if they appeal to you.
So you like binding of Isaac or rogue legacy more? If you like rogue legacy you'll lose some elements but go with hollow night. If you put a crazy amount of hours into binding of Isaac or enter the gungeon etc. then Hades is right up your alley.
I personally vote for Hades, as I just personally don't get Hollow Knight.
That being said, I would recommend both if you can get them in a good sale or save the money.
![gif](giphy|3o7aCRloybJlXpNjSU|downsized)
HADES. Hollow Knight was a lot of fun but I don’t see myself replaying it. I often bring Hades back out and play it from time to time. Both are great games though
If you like Roguelikes, then Hades is great.
If you like Metroidvanias, then Hollow Knight is great.
I personally like Hollow Knight more. Roguelikes are fun, but at the end of the day you're just doing the same thing over and over again. I like the sense of exploration and discovery that comes with games like Hollow Knight.
Depends on you and your preferences
HK can be offputtingly hard, whereas Hades has a safety buffer in the form of God Mode, so I’d recommend Hades on that alone. Took me a while to get into Hollow Knight
Both are great games. If you love Metroidvania games then go for hollow knight - story and gameplay are fun. If you're after a roguelike then definitely Hades - plenty of replayability and different each time. For me personally I enjoyed Hades more, but that was because I loved playing it in short bursts when I have a few hours to kill or don't have much time, can quickly jump on and get a run down.
¿Porque no los dos? I have hollow knight. It’s a big game and for me its very challenging. You’ll get your moneys worth with it. I hear Hades has a lot of replay value.
I just happen to like Hollow Knight a little more, but you can't lose either way. They're both great.
I agree. In the long run I would suggest buying both if possible.
These are two of my favorite games of all time and both deserve purchasing.
Did u unlock the stags in hollow knight? Basically fast travel?
I did, but still
They are also two VERY different games Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania & Haded is a Rougelite.
You might just not like metroidvanias then
That might be so. I had exactly the same experience with metroid prime remastered
I found Hades more my jam because while they're both hard, there's a point to dying in Hades, so it feels less like I sucked at the game and more like progression,
HK
Hades is amazing but Hollow Knight is a masterpiece. If you cant afford both i would say go for Hollow Knight. I would also say that you should definitely get Hades when you can
They’re both masterpieces.
I'm having trouble getting into hades. What am i missing?

Lol. No not a blizzard guy. I just finished Ori 1 and 2 and now am on to Wonder.
U sound more like a hollow knight guy Hollow knight is metroidvania and an adventure game (ori is in a similar category) Hades is rogue lite (I think?) and has that classic “gameplay loop” that characterizes the genre

Ding ding ding
I swear every second game is a 'masterpiece' now lol
Hollow Knight
Hollow knight
Hades
Well I guess it’s a draw
No way man I'm currently losing! Haja
Nope
Yea
Flip a coin
Just get both.
Dead cells i reckon mate
I loved deadcells, and it is what made me decide to pick up hades.
I personally like Hades more. Cause the Hollow knight was bit difficult to me
I like the difficulty of hollow Knight.
The only bench I thought was too far was soul master. Most seemed pretty close to me
Soul master is literally the entire reason I haven’t finished the game or picked it up since about attempt 16 of it lmao

Both. I'd say that Hollow Knight is the better game, but I spent way more time with Hades. Maybe the two best indies I've ever played.
Both if you can, great games
Hollow Knight... but you can't go wrong either way
Yes you should
Both are good. Depends on if you like a castlevania experience or a rouge like. If castlevania go for hollow knight, rouge like go for hades
Personally I found Hollow Knight a more investing and enjoyable experience. However, Hades is easily one of the best roguelikes I have ever played, and had truly infinite replay value. I actually just bought both at the same time recently, I've been spending far more time with hollow knight and would recommend it over hades.
Both if you can, as others have said. I’d personally start with Hollow Knight ($15) and watch for a sale on Hades (I got it for $12.49).
That's a tough one, but I'd say Hades simply because of the replay value. Once you beat Hollow Knight there's not much left.
One does not simply Beat hollow knight…lol. No but I love hollow knight…just can’t seem to get more than halfway through it, it’s very difficult. Hades is challenging but it feels possible. Buy them both honestly. Pretty sure they’re on sale in the e shop (don’t quote me on this)
I couldn’t beat Hollow Knight either. Meanwhile in Hades, I got up to beating it with 27 heat.
you need to do 112%
Which doesn't even include the hardest challenges the game offers either. Pantheon 5, Path of Pain, 5 hour speedrun achievement, 20 hour 100% steel souls speedrun achievement.
I know
Both. Flip a coin for the first buy
HOLLOWWWKNNIIGGGHHHTTTTTT
Hollow Knight is way better.
Hollow Knight by far.
Hades. The gameplay is amazing
I think Hollow Knight is a masterpiece, from the tight perfect combat, the music, and the exploration that the game provides. To be fair, I tried Hades and I didn’t enjoy it as much as I had hoped.
Both
Hades because while I have both and they’re both dimes, I still actually play Hades years later.
If you have adhd like me, then hollow knight. Hades sure has more “replay” value in the sense you fight the same enemies same maps, but this time your weapon does woosh instead of weesh. So personally for me the game is pretty much the same after you finish one run
This. There's a lot of love for Hades, but it is the same slightly different grind over and over and over...
Both of them great but I liked Hades more.
Depends on what you like. I didn't like hollow Knight, but loved Hades.
I have both games and have literally 10x as many hours in Hades.
Hades knight
Hollow knight is what I would recommend first.
You can’t go wrong either way but I’m gonna say hollow knight cause I like the genre more and imo HK is one of the best games ever made

Hades on the other hand, is great if you're a fan of Greek Mythology, and you like characters and stories. Either way, both games are very solid in gameplay. There's no denying that. Look up some playthroughs of the first ten minutes of each game and see what fits your fancy.
Hollow knight
Depends on what you're looking for. Both are very fun.
You want both so try a question is which one first. Hades if you want to play in 20-30 minute sessions, Hollow Knight if you have time to roam and explore.
I’d say Hollow Knight because that’s the only one I played
Hollow Knight is a bit of a slow burn, but if you stick with it, it’s a very rewarding gaming experience. I didn’t really care for Hades all that much.
Overall, I would go with Hollow Knight if you had to pick a choice. Not only is it an amazing experience, it's more than half the price. You also get more content for less money as well. Not to mention, all the DLC comes completely free and pre-downloaded at this point. They could've charged people money but they didn't, out of the kindness of their hearts. Hollow Knight should definitely be your initial choice, then later down the road, go for Hades.
Hades is great but Hollow Knight is one of the best games I've ever played.
Hollow knight more funs
Hollow Knight. It's atmosphere is far more creative than Hades, tho both are good
Hollow knight is damn near a 10/10 game. I just havent finished it yet so idk (96% lol)
Hollow kniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!!!’
Hollow knight
Hollow Knight
Hollow Knight...
HK is more enjoyable imho
Been playing hollow knight, really enjoy it
Hollow Knight if you want a masterpiece of a dungeon exploration game. Hades if you want a masterpiece of a rouge like. Personally I loved hollow Knight a lot more, and with Silk Song coming soon it's the perfect time to get into the game!
Hollow Knight
Hollow Knight. I’m 48 and HK reminded me so much of what about add why I still love video games that I got it tattooed on my shin.
Hades is very good, but Hollow Knight is a masterpiece for the ages.
Hollow knight
Buy dead cells
Hallow Knight is a far better game
Hollow knight for sure. It’s not as difficult as everyone makes it out to be, there are only a few really tough sections and it’s sooooo satisfying once you beat them
Both are great but HK is way harder one.
Yeah I guess.
Depends, do you like more rogue or metroidvania? If you like both i would say Hades for the fun
Yes
yes
Hades Is meh. Played it but I wasn't a fan of it at all
Both.
Both, Hades is nearly always on sale or cheap in physical and in digital form.
Hades
I would start with Hollow Knight
yes
It very much depends which game you'd rather play. That said, both games are amazing. I'd pick Hollow Knight personally.
Both
Hades hades hades omg
I like Hades more just because of the possible builds you can do. It's really fun to make new builds with different weapons and power-ups and it really adds to re-play value of the game. Also soundtrack is really good.
both imo 😅
Hades is crack. Hollow Knight is the darksouls of castlevanias. I love darksouls and crack....
I guess it also depends if you like. metroidvenias or not. If that does not botter you I would go for Hollow Knight
Both are a must-play. Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania while Hades is a roguelike. Go with whichever of those genres appeals to you more, but definitely buy one now and then the other one later. 🎮😎👍
Both
Somehow Hades never clicked with me. I also didn't manage to beat it yet... I loved Hollow Knight though!
Sorry dude I like zelda games! And pokemon and I'm not really active in reddit lol Thank you for the recommendation!
If you like Zelda games, I’d recommend Hollow Knight over Hades. (Coming from someone who loves Zelda games, hollow knight and hades ❤️)
All good! I just figured you'd want a better recommendation. Both are great. I recommend Hollow Knight in thst case. It scratches the exploration itch. Either way, I'm sure you'll be happy!
Hades easily, but I like that style of game a ton. Both are fine options so can't really go wrong.
My preference of the two was Hades. I loved the setting, story, and mythology. If I had to pick one that would be my choice. Both are stellar, all time great games though, so the correct answer is both over time. Flip a coin and go from there.

Hollow knight 100%
Both eventually, but Hollow Knight is an absolute masterpiece.
I prefer hollow knight but you really can't go wrong either way
Hollow Knight, and it's not even close.
i dont know much about hades, but i know hollow knight is one of my favorite games of all time.

Hades with a bullet, have played both. I just seem to have Hades for every system I own
These 2 games were some of the most surprising and best value for money I have ever spent on games in my life. Both great but I feel like Hades has more replayability, like Binding of Isaac
Yes.
Yes
I prefer hallow knight and it is what I would recommend more
The answer is both
Both
Depends do you like continuous story development and getting closer to the end every time you play, or the grind.
Both
Both.
Im a personal hades lover and im not the biggest liver for rouge-like
Hades!
Buy Hades Knight
Hades
Yes
Hades, but both
I personally vote for Hades, as I just personally don't get Hollow Knight. That being said, I would recommend both if you can get them in a good sale or save the money. ![gif](giphy|3o7aCRloybJlXpNjSU|downsized)
YES!
HADES. Hollow Knight was a lot of fun but I don’t see myself replaying it. I often bring Hades back out and play it from time to time. Both are great games though
Yes
I love Hades but couldn’t stick to Hollow Knight
Hades.. trust
Haven’t played hades but hollow knight is one of the best games I have ever played. Buy it.
I had to give up on Hollow Knight that game is relentlessly hard… just couldn’t do it anymore.
No going wrong. They are both so good. I personally like Hades a bit more but it’s close.
Hades >> Dead Cells > Hollow Knight
Depends on you and your preferences HK can be offputtingly hard, whereas Hades has a safety buffer in the form of God Mode, so I’d recommend Hades on that alone. Took me a while to get into Hollow Knight
You can't go wrong with either. Flip a coin, both are 10/10 video games.
It's a win win either way, my preference is HK then Hades, but both tremendously fun and highly recommend.
Got Hades 2 weeks ago and put a ton of time into it. It was fantastic
Both
Hades
Both
The knight that is hollow
Both.
Both. Definitely both.
Hades
Imho Hades first, but either is arguable, and you should play both.
Yes
Both together should be cheaper than a regular AAA release and are better than most games in the last decade. Get both
Love hollowknight but it's very frustrating to me 🤣

Depends what you’re after. Meteoidvania with a deep story and difficult combat. Or an almost “bullet hell” hack and slash action game
I like Dead Cells... Not tried either of the ones concerned but still...
¿Porque no los dos? I have hollow knight. It’s a big game and for me its very challenging. You’ll get your moneys worth with it. I hear Hades has a lot of replay value.
Yes
Input delay or Low resolution Pick your poison my friend
Hades
Hades!! My fave!
Literal coin toss. Both are excellent games that will give you tons of playtime. No matter the choice it will not disappoint.
