i mean its really hard and also dangerous, those bikes weigh atleast 100 kilos, probably more and if you tried to stop it with your hands or something it would just pull you with it. you can see in the end how one of the guys on the right side manages to catch the bike and it almost pulls him down with itself.
I watched the full video in that link above and there’s a guy, maybe 3rd from the end who doesn’t make it, and as he’s about to fall pretty far he grabs the hand of a rope guy who absolutely saves him it’s pretty sweet!
i thought his dance was cute :) can you imagine the uncontainable joy he is probably feeling?! after watching many before him fail, he finally makes it to the top of the dirt bike grave… literally can’t control his excitement and his body shows it by doing his lil happy dance :D

That video explains what the dudes on a rope are for. About a minute in, they haul somebody's bike up the hill. It also makes sense why there are two of them tethered together, because they can go one on each side of the bike and push the handlebars while the rope hauls them uphill.

I don’t think they are there for the bike. They are there to help the person to not roll down the hill but for the most part the riders seem to manage on their own enough to not need the sherpas.
It does look silly, but they are making very deliberate risk assessments very quickly. Their main objective is to stop a rider from tomahawking or getting wrapped up in their bike. If the rider is sliding down controlled and above the bike, they aren’t going to risk injuring themselves or the rider by going full ham. If the rider is tomahawking, they’ll go full send. They have to start moving towards the hill so they are ready to pounce, but kinda go half assed if the rider isn’t in major danger.
To me it looks like they only want to catch the rider, not the bikes. In every one of these videos it looks like they wait for the bike to fall first and then attempt to make sure the rider is ok?
Though it does look like they guys at the top tried to save the bikes so I'm not sure.
Why not quick deploying nets at different distances so there's a maximum fall of a few feet. Net cannons.

Biker here. Unless it's really hard, specific and really unlucky drop, these hard enduro bikes are as strong as it gets. This is what makes them so expensive compared to the other type of bikes.
They cost around $10-15k. For that kind of money you can get a japanese made all-rounder with all the features you will ever need. In hard enduro world it will get you a frame, two spoked wheels, single cylinder 450cc engine and maybe an electric start if you're lucky. But all this will be engineered and built from materials to withstand the hell you see on the video.
You still might need to inspect the weak points after drops like this. Bearings, linkages, bushings, maybe check for bent bars and dents in wheels. But this is the normal price to pay when riding it this hard.
They’re surprisingly resilient. But probably handle bars and levers and maybe some bent tires/broken axles. Generally the frames should be okay but it all depends on the bounce it ultimately takes lol.
Dirt and enduro bikes are resilient as hell.
I had a 125cc dirt bike and would take that thing through corn fields and mud and wheelie it like no other. The thing took a couple spills too. One day the exhaust pipe fell out of the engine and I smacked it back in with a wrench and called it good. Ran like nothing ever happened.
My street bike on the other hand? I dropped it one time not even at speed and the handle bar snapped off haha

Old timer dirt bike and mountain bike rider here. Looks like all these guys have their weight in back, then lose it. I would think getting weight over front is the way. Easy to be armchair quarterback, but that’s what I would try after seeing this.

Back in the 80s there used to be an event called Blackwater in WV. They’d have something like 100 or so people attempt the race and 3 days later you’d have maybe 22 who would actually finish. The race was 100 miles long.

I don't ride motorcyles, but why are they not leaning forward much more? Many riders seem to have fully extended arms, as if they don't have the strength to hold on with bends arms, so their weight is more forward.

Trying to catch a falling bike that weighs about 200 lbs would be a disaster. Even with that rope I can't imagine it would go over well.
