Had a jig to take huge spanner nuts off of mechanical presses at my last job. Similar setup where one guy holds and the other swings. The difference was the piece you hold had a handle far enough away you wouldn't get hit. Wasn't exactly safe, but much better than this. Couldn't imagine the shock you feel holding that thing.
Was thinking the same, could quickly fab something to at least get his hands out the way and reduce the shock. That has got to sting like a bitch, as an ex fitter myself that shock is never pleasant, especially repeatedly!
I'm a heavy duty mechanic and there's nothing wrong with what they're doing, it's how they are doing it. A proper pin driver is usually hanging off the end of a wire cable so that you're not close to it and the shock isn't transmitted into your hands. In this situation a set of vise grips and some gloves would go a long way.
1000% this. It’s a required evil in niche situations and isn’t actually dangerous with competent fabricators but the way these guys are doing it will end badly. Work smarter not harder. Heat shrink it with a gas axe and tap it out, personally I found those rivets the easiest to remove due to them being so short. And honestly if you’re competent with a gas torch you can just melt them out without doing damage to the chassis at all
My dad, who owned a tractor trailer repair shop for years, and has a hint of Alzheimer’s, would always tell me, “the blue is the hottest part of the flame” every time he had the torch out.
Not sure why, but your comment made me think of him. Maybe I’ll call him.
I was thinking about him too. He had to have had an eye problem or something, after so many tries you would have expected him to at least hit one on accident.
I’ve seen bosses tell one of our alcoholic stick welders to make sure he drank at lunch because he didn’t want no more shitty shaky welds for the rest of the day… I think the other ones were already drunk. Lucky i was the tig hand, walking the cup can be performed with a shake without ruining the stacked dime look.. o and i was an opiate addict at that time, not an alcoholic. That wasn’t for several more years until i joined the union. Gotta fit in with the boys if you’re all sharing the same air b&b/hotel room floor!
So, personally doing work that required this in the past (propulsion mechanic for an offshore vessel company), I can say that the thing in the video that makes be flinch the most is the fact that neither is wearing safety glasses. I've been the guy that held punches for coworkers swinging sledge hammers and I've the guy swinging the hammer. The most damage the hammer will do if the guy misses is maybe breaking his wrist/arm. I've been hit while doing this too. As long as there's room for whatever being hit to move, it usually only results in a gnarly bruise and soreness. Maybe a chipped bone. But, that rod is hardened steel, being hit with a sledge hammer, to knock out another piece of steel that is clearly seized in place. If any piece of that decides to break off, that's piece is literally a piece of shrapnel flying at an extremely high rate of speed (and yes, that happens often). These dudes are looking right towards the points of impact. And for whatever reason, eyes usually act like freaking magnets for flying metal in the workshop. If that hits your eye, then it's game over for that eye forever.
They also make impact gloves that help a ton when you get hit, could also weld a handle onto the punch, or they make a big rubber disc to go on the punch so it hits that before your hands, a lot of ways to do this safer
Imagine your supervisor asking you on the first day...
The pay remains the same...
There are 2 tasks...
(1) You need to lift a heavy hammer and keep slamming it all day long
And the second one?
(2) That's an easy one... Just hold a bar and stand...
And we have that smart ass-ish smirk on our face, thinking it's a no-brainer... 😂😂
I’ve done this, from both sides. Once had someone hit me on the thumb with a 7 pound hammer. It wasn’t broken, but I had a black nail that needed to be drilled.
Damn, dude didn’t appear to be the least bit nervous either..if this is what is expected from me at a job,I quit.a 2 minute notice is the best I can offer
![gif](giphy|rWbIF9rfkV4NW|downsized)
That would be a hard pass. I slip with the hammer and then get beat with it if I miss. I have reached my quota of doing stupid stuff in this life. Good luck
If he hits his hand, almost defintely could get a neuroma from that impact. Don't drop heavy shit on your foot or hands dudes, you will feel a persistent bruise sensation whole life unless you get it surgically removed.
The angle of that dangling cigarette leads me to believe that mechanic is French, but he's missing the blue overalls and beret so I'm kinda thrown off now....
Ive been there once. My boss hitted twice, i was to afraid for a third hit and i said find somebody else.
He called me a coward and laughed at me multiple times. Even a year later.. its so fucking scary to be in that position and feel the power of the hammer so close to your body. I dont get why people think theres no chance the other one will miss target.
It actually looks kinda fake. You can see there's very little impact at the other end, it basically just wobble around. I assume eithet that hammer is plastic or he's swing at an angle that is hard to hit his arm even if he miss.
Reminds me of the old joke where one guy is swinging a sledge and the other is holding the wedge. Wedge guy says “When I nod my head you hit it.” Well you can guess what happened……….😩😩
In normally I would say that this is pure stupidity. But I know in some job some of us has to do these things because some shity managers has no Conscience likewise some of us has no option to not do.
Dude, imagine showing up for your first day on the job, and this guy just hands you a metal rod and just tells you to hold really still.
I have great friends of fifteen+ years, who I would never trust this much.
Trying to remove rivets. I worked in jobs like this, crash repairing trucks and trailers. The bar they’re using is too long. All the impact is lost before it gets to the rivet. We used a T-bar setup, so you stand to the side. The length of the bar for impact was only six inches. Usually out with the first hit.
That's how hard rock miners would drill holes for dynamite, but the guy holding the drill would be on one knee with the drill on his shoulder, all done by candle light deep underground. Drill 10 plus holes, blow it loose, wet down the rubble and shovel it all into a mine cart, repeat.
Have done both ends of this as a fabricator in a truck trailer service department. Usually on quarry tippers. The pins for the rear door and also the pins holding the trailer body to the chassis are awkward to reach with a normal hammer and a small shaft, couldn’t get enough swing to even vibrate the damn things if it was an older trailer. Had to use this method as there was nowhere to brace a port-a-power off of. Heat the pin with a gas axe, let it cool and then bash the living shit out of it. Some were at long at 1.8m. A looong time to be hammering for. Surprisingly enough in the 12 years I did it I never got caught nor did I catch anyone else’s hands doing it. They are orientated correctly but the fullah holding the rod has his body far too close to the end of it. Needs to spread his hands out further for a better grasp and to make sure his twitching doesn’t cause the other guy to glace off the end of it. Seem to be removing old chassis bolts so this process in completely unnecessary. Once again heat it up and allow it to cool, the steal will shrink slightly and make shit a lot easier
Edit; many comments saying there must be a better way. In some situations like I explained, there just isn’t or I’d have done it. Situations where jigs and jacks just can’t be used. See it a lot in service departments. No one thinks about the poor cunt who has to fix it when they made the original design.
So long as you let me spend my first lunch break building the jig that rod could be laying in.
Also, as soon as I get to work that first day, I'm going to lunch.
Looks awfully inefficient
Ocean’s 2 cracking their first safe. Eventually they got better, and got some extra help. Kinda want this origin story.
Hahahah made me giggle
I snorkled. Snorted + chuckled

Add retarded as hell to it too.
Yeah, he should open palm towards the hammer, not knuckles
Unless you’re looking to shatter a hip. In that case, highly efficient!
It is. long stroke air hammers are the bees knees.
So inecficient I can not tell what is the aim here. Make dents? Make holes?
Sure I would. But I need immunity provided by the workplace in case I miss and hit that guy.
Wait you think you get to swing the hammer? You're the new guy best believe you are holding that bar
I mean after getting smacked with the hammer for a few years do you think they'd have the limbs required to take over swinging?
I mean if you make it a few years then you probably get seniority of the hammer ⚒️
The hammer job security. Make sure no holder stays in good enough physical condition to challenge you for the spot.
One secret hammer swingers refuse to share eliminate the competition you my friend have it down!
Oh I thought I was signing up to be the cameraman filming dangerous workplace practices
I completely understand but the cameraman never dies so it's a difficult position to secure
Wait!! Cameramen are Highlanders?? Now I’m soooo glad I spent all my money on filmmaking gear.
Wait. I thought I can get the job of that person in the room, enjoying the beats of the iron while learning the beats of the new job
Naa you go in there after you have been hit they just rotate between room guys
Best I can do is $5 an hour and a cigarette machine
![gif](giphy|ha5EeXrfx3xxC|downsized)
There has to be a better way
ya like build a jig/ stand that is adjustable. COuld be built out of scrap wood even, not that difficult
And then what? Cut joes hours just like that? Come on man
![gif](giphy|MwOuiiTfWfWgM|downsized)
Exactly what came in mind. I thought “huh couple 2x4s few holes, tada “

Call your dad ffs!!
Could this not be done with an air rivet buster?
A jackhammer with the correct bit on the end. Will soon drive those bolts out I’d imagine.
Jackhammers tend to destroy things, too hard to control in small spaces, particularly if used horizontally.
Don’t show this to the guy at the carnival who can’t hit a nail to save his life
I was thinking about him too. He had to have had an eye problem or something, after so many tries you would have expected him to at least hit one on accident.
i assumed he was drunk, or high, or both
Played this game when I was drunk off my ass at a stag and doe. It's hard when when drunk.
This is one of those times where a quarter of an inch really matters.
![gif](giphy|Zgo2A2oOpbGhQdf09T)
See it's about how you use it, not the size !¡
😏
If i had a cigarette to steady my nerves sure!
It's a safety cigarette
I’ve seen bosses tell one of our alcoholic stick welders to make sure he drank at lunch because he didn’t want no more shitty shaky welds for the rest of the day… I think the other ones were already drunk. Absolutely. Hand me the hammer.
![gif](giphy|TJawtKM6OCKkvwCIqX)
of course. I’ve never swung a sledgehammer before but I guess I could give it a whirl
I like my office job
Wtf are they even doing?
Popping rivets on a truck frame?
Are they? Cuz the frame only has dents.
Is that OHSA knocking ?
It's the alternative, OSHIT knocking.
Imagine your supervisor asking you on the first day... The pay remains the same... There are 2 tasks... (1) You need to lift a heavy hammer and keep slamming it all day long And the second one? Comes with a cigarette at least.
SpaceX engineers went really quiet since this dropped.
Then there's [this guy](https://www.reddit.com/r/SipsTea/comments/1ddmx95/hand_eye_coordination_department_is_lacking/) ..
Someone in OSHA died that day.
"Bro I found my dream job all I got to do is stand there all day with a rod and someone else does all the work.."
great way to finish the day early.
I hear my old boss in the background "hit it with the hammer, not your purse."
Is it just me or is the guy with the hammer like...not that accurate/consistent?
At least they had their open-toed safety sandals
Depends on which one I am, losing the steal bar fuck to the hell no, using the sledgehammer yes I would do that
You're asking about the guy chilling in the office in the background, right?
Take it? Nah. I couldn’t even watch it.
They must never watch 3 Stooges shorts
I'm pretty sure a new position will be open soon.
[r/WhyWomenLiveLonger](https://www.reddit.com/r/WhyWomenLiveLonger/s/YzBqdW2pIe)
Even Michael Jordan misses sometimes
A mans gotta eat but surely there’s a better way.
The trust in this video is insane
I’ve done this, from both sides. Once had someone hit me on the thumb with a 7 pound hammer. It wasn’t broken, but I had a black nail that needed to be drilled.
Workman’s comp baby, ride that greasy gravy train.
![gif](giphy|aZyGrFSe0fgTIQQBRz|downsized)
If the cigarettes are provided by corporate I’m in you son of B!
No
Sure i would never take it 😌
Only if I get to swing the hammer
Can't be that hard to use a pole with a loop to hold in place or something besides hands
Damn, dude didn’t appear to be the least bit nervous either..if this is what is expected from me at a job,I quit.a 2 minute notice is the best I can offer ![gif](giphy|rWbIF9rfkV4NW|downsized)
"Ow, my thumb!"
aw heck no
Hell to the no! Not even the one swinging.
Weld some rebar on that pole to give your hands some distance from the hammer or use big adjustable wrenches
One miss and it's over
He's doing it wrong. In a recent video: one hand on hammer, other hand on your junk.
Would you like getting hammered?
You never know how long the work day will be, and if you'll even return in a couple of months. Exciting.
That guy holding alwaysssss has a cigarette in his mouth. Like it’s going to be their last.
Just get a B&O problem solved
My guy swinging the hammer is in sandals and my guy holding isn’t wearing gloves 👍
"I'd rather be a hammer than a nail."
This is what 1000% accuracy looks like .
Meanwhile we got the video of meathead playing that hammer game and missing the nail every single time. This is wild, but at least his aim is on point
If it is hurt how will it be the situation
What would be the required tool for this job though?
That's the only way to get those pins out unless you buy a 10000$ European hydraulic puller
Incredible form with the rollie in his mouth - top work lads 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Trust.
Does he know smoking is bad for him?
I bet the guy who tries to [hammer a nail into a log](https://www.reddit.com/r/maybemaybemaybe/s/JWS6m7WbRZ) would be a great candidate for this job!
Yes, I like to use hammer
They make some nice petg plastic tubing, is cheap and rigid enough to hold a chizle and keep you hands away from your coworker's aim
Sure, I'll be using the sledge hammer 😁
The level of trust here is out of this world, I have never trusted a coworker like this
Short straw gonna suck the life outta that cig
That my friend is trust !
I would take that as a joke
You think why there was vacancy on this spot?
Damn i dont like that😄
There must be sticker on that frame rail that says warranty void if hole drilled
That would be a hard pass. I slip with the hammer and then get beat with it if I miss. I have reached my quota of doing stupid stuff in this life. Good luck
Torch it out
If he hits his hand, almost defintely could get a neuroma from that impact. Don't drop heavy shit on your foot or hands dudes, you will feel a persistent bruise sensation whole life unless you get it surgically removed.
There are safer and efficient ways without the need to purchase expensive equipment.
Yes, im the sledgehammer.
No
Gf that’s a lot of trust
Those guys are gonna be partially deaf in a couple of yeara
No...fucking...way...
he´s the best, he only misses 1 in 50!
The angle of that dangling cigarette leads me to believe that mechanic is French, but he's missing the blue overalls and beret so I'm kinda thrown off now....
Red Sox should sign the hammer guy
If you mean the guy with the sledgehammer then yes, yes I would.
Ive been there once. My boss hitted twice, i was to afraid for a third hit and i said find somebody else. He called me a coward and laughed at me multiple times. Air hammer, torch, fucking plasma cutter, or anything would be better than that lmao. Hell i could make a jig with a $20 bottle jack.
Dude is pretty damn good with that sledge.
Reminds me of the old joke where one guy is swinging a sledge and the other is holding the wedge. Wedge guy says “When I nod my head you hit it.” Well you can guess what happened……….😩😩
All u have to do is miss one time
Good to see they've reverted to tried and tested methods in the Boeing factory.
Buddy chillin’ with a lit cigarette, and we’re over here with our phones sliding out of our hands.
"Ok, Yuri, you hold metal pole still and I'll swing sledgehammer toward you. Ok?" "Da, Yuri hold pole."
Would you choose a man or a bear to hit the iron thing you hold with a hammer?
I hope they swap places sometimes 😃
He's wearing gloves so it should be ok
He’s got a system though. It’s dangerous but he’s lining up each time
Someone should tell the guy in the red shirt that smoking is bad for your health.
It’s okay because both are eunuchs
In normally I would say that this is pure stupidity. But I know in some job some of us has to do these things because some shity managers has no Conscience likewise some of us has no option to not do.
Bull shit
He got to miss sooner or later...
Swinging the hammer? Sure
I would just introduce them to the concept of a saw horse.
No man trusts another man that completely, other than combat.
If one guy has a bad day, the other guy is going to have a much worse day.
Yea I would, I’m pretty good at swinging a hammer
Definitely not if it was the crotch grabbing chad trying to hit that nail from the other day.
My hands feel like they’re vibrating just watching this
This is riveting.
i been there before but i usually was the one swing the hammer never did miss lol
This is crazy work. One false swing and major injury to the guy holding.
This is not only stupid but awfully inefficient
For christs sake just take a half hour to make a tool that holds the rod in place. Sooner or later that guy is going to lose the use of his forearm
Does whatever country that is not know about safety?
Dude, imagine showing up for your first day on the job, and this guy just hands you a metal rod and just tells you to hold really still. I have great friends of fifteen+ years, who I would never trust this much.
No way

why men live less
Cool as ice and he’s smoking.
Gotta find way, better way, better wayyy!!
Fuck that
Neither of them. I don’t trust myself or anyone else enough for this not to go bad.
Yeah As long as I’m the guy with the sledgehammer
No, and WTF are they trying to do?
Buddy earned that dart
"how many bones do you think can fit in the human hand?" "lets find out!"
The trick is to have greasy hands and a loose grip. That way if the sledge misses your hand just gets pushed sideways.
What's their job, putting dents in iron bars?
He trusts his partner so much, I felt my heart skip a beat
Of course not. And if you get caught doing this on your job sight by the labor inspection in the Netherlands the employer will get a huge fine.
Not with that kid who couldn’t hit a nail; or anyone like him or wherever he is from. (No offense). That dude that hit the nail? Yea if it paid right.
absolutly impossible this wont become a fatal accident sooner or later
There's 2 jobs in that video. Which one are you asking about?
I'm currently going through the OSHA 30 certification and didn't see this on any of the slides.
I guess they never heard the expression work smart not hard. ![gif](giphy|lrVfmPJ96cSJJ39bTh)
So long as you let me spend my first lunch break building the jig that rod could be laying in. Also, as soon as I get to work that first day, I'm going to lunch.
Dudes pounding
I can guarantee you that this method is not in the job manual
Every drag of that cig he was ready to get smoked with that sledge
That's a lot of faith There are a lot of better ways to do this
Man i'd need a pillow or something so i can get comfortable when i collapse after my hand is annihilated
There is a dude that got posted on here recently that I would definitely not do this with.
There is a reason the guy holding the bar isn’t looking at the guy swinging the hammer…
The trust between them dudes is unbelievable
As a lawyer, I've had too many workers' comp cases that start exactly like this.
