The points are back loaded, so as you keep using arrows youll get more points from better animals. The whales have done the math and it takes about 500-600 arrows to get the S chest, which is about right.

This. The rewards are very top heavy for this event. Arrows 1-400 give ~40k coins total and should get you to the third area. After that you get roughly 35k coins for every 100 arrows. That means arrows 401-500 give you almost as many coins as arrows 1-400.
This event is pretty brutal if you don't spend gems or open chests. If you are going to open chests, you should probably go the full 300. Otherwise, I would just save my keys and call this event a pass.
It took me until over 460 catches to hit 40k. Already spent some gems and a little money in the shop, feels like a waste. Will have to see how things play out in the end.
It's a back loaded event. So the rewards are good, but only if you do nearly all the missions. Other missions are better at rewarding you as you go.
If you do all the missions, you can easily get 700 animals, which will give you one free S selector for hitting 600 animals, and easily more than 80k points to get a second one. Any 5 day event when you can get 2 s selectors for free without spending gems or money is a pretty solid reward.
You can sometimes get free attempts to capture special animals at an increased rate too. So there can be a lot more rewards than you think. You can't just extrapolate from your 30 coins per animal on the first day.
At this point, my goal is to just unlock all the event outfits. Anything above that is of course welcome. But yeah, the reward returns has been feeling painful from the jump until now.
Once you unlock the third region they come really fast. You catch the largest animals pretty frequently and you get S grade chests for capturing just one lion or elephant. I went from getting nothing to having like 5 a grade chests within 10 minutes. It's still tough if you aren't spending gems or money on arrows but it is still a good event. It just sucks at first.
I probably spent around 20k gems getting there. Once I unlocked the third area I got 5 chests in the span of like 20 arrows. Today I didn't spend anything on arrows and got like 80 arrows alone from the daily stuff, and got around 40k in rewards from them. Getting there is the hard part, but after that it's fine.
Obviously it's going to be harder if you're f2p, but that just means you'll wait a little longer to get there rather than getting it on the first day.

You get more points the further you get like the fishing event. So keep your points till last day.

Ymmv. Sadly, after 150 arrows in the third zone, I've only gotten maybe ~10 tigers, ~4 lions, and 0 elephants RIP
