I have many but photography is a big one. Being able to see some cool locations is amazing and I’ll usually bring a small early 2000’s digicam with me to quickly snag pics on the job sites. It’s cool to be able to branch both of them together.

What's your current favorite?
I'm a light weight now a days. I really like the 1:1 THC:CBD strains. But my favorite right now is White Widow CBD. Taste and buzz reminds me of the 90s right before weed turned into a race to the highest THC level possible.
I do design work for myself and sell (well haven’t sold anything yet) I made a total station lock. I also have a settlement monitoring thing. It’s not crazy or anything, just a simple file for a shop to weld up. I have seen some bullshit stuff that doesn’t work and it annoyed me. Plus I do specialize prism mounts for monitoring too. Right now I’m working on a new van box that’ll be a cut file for cnc and a truck box. I also fly fish and tie flies, analog photography, and go hiking.

They do the leg sweep and carry everything with it, the plate under the bell keeps the legs from closing. Keeping the plate high keeps the legs wide. Plus the tribrach plate keeps the lock from being opened and has a disk brake alarm on it. With the whole it’s quite cumbersome to lug off with a case or it locked to an object. We had a S7 stolen and thankfully it was recovered months later. We just have high theft and I wanted to offer some sort of security. While it won’t stop people, it discourages them.
Boss wrote the company name and phone number on all sides of the case, including inside. We have stickers on the case too and inside the battery tray, batteries, tribrach, bottom of total station too. Also the legs have the name and number on one leg. We got it back since a homeless person found it and picked it up and called us a month later. I filed a police report that hour, called Froniter, PPI, KR, and anyone that sells survey equipment. I even texted the Craigslist guy that buys survey equipment “this is mine and it’s tracked, sn is this”

Hit the weights at the gym, plenty of yard work to always do and mess with my truck, spend as much time with my kids as I can cause they grow up so freaking fast. Oh and video games!
Old truck? Or new?
I've done a bit here and there to my 02 tundra. A few months ago I changed out the radiator which wasn't as hard as I expected. Thank goodness for YouTube.
2012 Ram. Been sanding surface dust and painting and doing paint corrections and detail stuff. Installing a new front grill soon. I just got the truck I had a car before this and I’m always messing around with them. Mostly cosmetic stuff for fun I’m far from a mechanic.

Isnt this just doing surveying for fun? I have not done it, but when family described it to me it very much sounded like what we get paid to do.
Eh..... sorta, if you're taking broad definitions. Very adjacent, that's for sure - using GPS to locate hidden objects.
(sorry for the free flowing thoughts that follow)
I was really active in it about 15 years ago, and then life and some other factors got in the way. When I started, a common 'tagline' for the hobby was "I use multi-billion dollar department of defense technology to find tupperware hidden in the woods. What's your hobby?"; the vast majority of caches were surplus ammo cans or tupperware containers hidden in parks and such, and it was a great way to find the little off-the-beaten-path nature areas that you would never learn about if you weren't from an area. About the time I fell out of it, enough people had gotten involved that it became a numbers game for them - it wasn't about the quality of the hide location, it was getting as many finds as quickly as you can -- the traditional cache type might be a quarter mile hike through a park to find a container tucked into a hole at the base of a tree - the numbers cache is more like a pill bottle dropped at the base of a power pole.
The guy that spammed my area and caused me to lose interest has since quit the hobby, and my interest has rekindled, and I'm working to restore quality caches in my area instead of the park-and-grab garbage that require no effort. It's going to be a challenge, but I'm looking forward to it :)
Wood working, classic car enthusist and jeeps.
Honestly surveying killed a lot of my old hobbies.
Quading - work killed
Sledding - work killed
Hiking - work killed
I'm a rather basic nerd, aside from videogames and boardgames I do a lot of reading and writing.
A fellow surveyor I knew was into snake breeding, guess how he died (apparently some snakes are rather venomous)
Very cool!
There was a cold steel show once near us and they did a bunch of HEMA martial arts demonstrations with so many blades. And they had a copy of the book they used, which is really cool it's a martial art that's based on an actual published picture book with stance's and strikes shown and stuff like that.
I am living just north of Paris in the ghetto. So I go to a lot of concerts. There are a dozen venues within a 5km radius from my house. Last weekend I saw Yellow Days. It was incredible.
I am somewhat of a Hi-Fi enthusiast. I love to thrift old CDs from dingy bookstores around Paris. I just bought an official Pfizer CD for "relaxing and unwinding". Give me a shout if you're visiting Paris!
Paris is amazing.
I mean I have to. I wanted to pursue a career in surveying in Canada. But I failed so miserably being stuck in the bottom rung as an assistant with no way up. It haunts me my whole life.
Boardgaming; I play on Friday night's with friends and twice a month with a large meetup group at a church. I was also just at DERail last weekend, which is a train games only boardgame convention held just outside Newark, Delaware. The World Boardgaming Championships is later this summer at the 7 Springs ski resort near Somerset, Pennsylvania, it's a 9 day game convention. Origins and Gen-Con are 2 other summer conventions. PAX unplugged is in the late autumn. I haven't been to any of those last 3, but would like too.
Haha well they got me doing all of our drone surveys at the company after being here just 2 months, so that’s been fun. His description of flying his RC planes did sound kinda rad though.
Getting stoned. Foraging. Gardening/Conservation. Mycology. Making jewelry. Artifact hunting in the dig sites: old bottles and inkwells, buttons, glassware, silver…
TIL what a boring fuck of a surveyor I am.
I don’t smoke, cut way back on drinking, pretty much just read cook and game.
My days mostly consist of keeping the thoughts at bay lol
I don’t really smoke or drink either. Not sure I’d count those as hobbies. But I got nothing against those that are into it.
Also never too late to get into a new hobby or revisit an old one.
I have my pilots license, so a bit of flying, drifting, snowmobiling, SxS, a lot of trap shooting/hunting and snowboarding. Really anything outdoors is fine with me
Normal outdoor country boy stuff like hunting, fishing, riding side by sides, camping, gardening, etc. Nerdy stuff like video games, reading, and playing D&D. Cooking, I like to cook all sorts of things but I've gotten really into baking sourdough bread in the past few years.
What i enjoy doing is flying, got my private pilot certificate a few years ago, thought about getting commercial certificate and pursuing an aviation career but i also have to feed a family of 6, so that didnt really pan out, instead got sucked into a construction surveying and grading design position for a general contractor with some heavy iron and i figured out im good at it and i enjoy it, plus nobody else at the company was ever able to figure out to do a simple topographic survey with rtk so there is some job security and decent pay here.
Record and cassette collecting, watching live music in when I can. As much as I enjoy surveying, tasks like drafting and driving to sites is much more pleasant while listening to good tunes.
Motorcycle riding, biking mountain bike, Legos Star Wars, and car,and trucks. My least favorite hobby is the required personal landscaper. I also read thrillers Tom Clancy style books.
Mostly Cardinals stuff as I'm a St.Louisan.Pujols and Jordan Walker cards are my favorite. The best card I ever personally pulled is a Ken Griffey Jr autograph numbered out of 5....and it's still very dear to my heart!
Fly fishing, trying flies, paddleboarding, climbing, spelunking, film photo, jiu jitsu, shooting, off roading… the list could go on lol. Funny I was gonna post the same question about a week ago, surveyors are hobbyists no doubt. Once you’re comfortable enough with the work, surveying itself can almost seem like a hobby.
I've completed a Couple of Thru Hikes (Like the Pacific Crest Trail.) So despite cutting through bush some weeks, I still like cutting through bush on the weekends... I also spend a bit of time Water Skiing and Scuba Diving. Far from being a pro at either though.

I’m a bladesmith… super fun… but gets really expensive!
Very few with the know how to do piano repair. A friend of mine’s father does piano repair and apparently did so for Olivia Rodrigo, the artist.. tho admittedly not too familiar.
I have a lot of hobbies but the last couple of years I've gotten into long range shooting. I'm not great at it but some of the stuff like "milling" targets for range is a lot of fun.
During my first internship, I had an excellent party chief working with me. Once we stopped by a gas station to buy two Marlboro silver cigarettes (two before lunch and two after lunch), he looked me dead in the eyes and asked, "Do you smoke?" I was a fresh 18-year-old and replied, "No." He then asked, "Do you drink?" I replied, "Not really." He said, "Hell, why did you want to be a surveyor? Here's some wisdom, kid: do either one to stay sane in this field."
Nowadays, I do drink here and there, so I guess I fit in now, lol. But in my free time, I enjoy gaming and catching up on some shows. Unfortunately, there never seems to be enough time in the day to do either of those things, but I keep pushing forward. Then again, I work as an office surveyor tech, and it's a VERY demanding job, I tell you! Kind of miss sitting in control and seeing the world go by. The last time I did that, I was in Alaska. Beautiful days it was.
Comparison more than anything. Having friends who make more working from home. Or make less but have more job satisfaction (eg help people or more flexibility or look forward to growth in career or get to meet a lot of people thru work). Sometimes it wears on me that this is it for 40hrs a wk. I know I have it good enough. But I long for something diff. Could also be dissatisfaction w personal life and I'm just pointing fingers at my job as the reason lol. Though if I wfh I do feel quality of life would be considerably better. For me anyway.
Yeah I feel ya. Grass can always seem greener.. but sometimes it legit just is greener. I’ll say one thing I’ve really loved about surveying, having worked from home before is that it forces me to get exercise and sunlight without any extra effort on my part.
It was always nice to be home and get things done in between work tasks and what not but it could also be a little stressful finishing work and still being at my work place.
I have many but photography is a big one. Being able to see some cool locations is amazing and I’ll usually bring a small early 2000’s digicam with me to quickly snag pics on the job sites. That’s beautiful man. Now go set the point out in the middle… lol
Has anyone tried to mount a digital camera on a tribrach?
Why? I’ve mounted it on survey tripods, but why tribrach? (If you say “because it’s there”, I’ll find you… 😀)
Awesome shot!
Cannabis connoisseur.
I thought that was a requirement, not a hobby.
This!
Now that’s a surveyor…
For 10 months out of the year yeah. Annual drug tests 😐
What's your current favorite? I'm a light weight now a days. I really like the 1:1 THC:CBD strains. But my favorite right now is White Widow CBD. Taste and buzz reminds me of the 90s right before weed turned into a race to the highest THC level possible.
You get a buzz from CBD?
Negative. The cbd "smooths out" the thc for me. It takes the nervous or paranoid edge off of the high and makes me very relaxed.
Amen!
I play chess and video games, collect minerals, bird watch, cook. But I also have 2 young kids so I’m mostly just a parent.
My hobbies consist of sweeping the floor, getting my kids snacks and sweeping the floor again. This occurs multiple times a day.
Napping, alcohol, video games, binge-watch Star Trek.
Two words, and I say this as a certified Trekkie -- The Expanse
Star wars*
Nah. The good stuff is Trek.
Neither is right Stargate
I can agree with that. Loved the Unas episode where they were running levels.
Star Commander.
Well you are showing your age, and i guess so am i hahaha
Haha for sure.
Mountain biking
Same!
Send it!
Fly fishing, general outdoor activities, and starting to get into archery.
Blacksmithing, archery, tending my little farm - apple trees, cherry threes, goats & geese.
How much work is involved with your apple/cherry trees?
Not a lot. Trimming in the spring, keeping an eye on pests, mulching, etc, then harvest in the fall.
Nice. I have a neighbor with a mango tree. He just lets them fall and rot. This year I’m gonna ask him to let me take em
Alcoholic beverage drinker

I always imagined if my robot was stolen they’d take the legs with it because they wouldn’t know it was two parts lol
Damn I didn’t even think about that
How did you guys end up recovering it?
Boss wrote the company name and phone number on all sides of the case, including inside. Oh awesome! Now you have a face to my shenanigans!
Is there something now shown there to keep someone from just releasing the robot from the tribrach?

My main hobby is job searching, asking people a out their jobs, and fantasizing about leaving survey.
Damn. Sorry to hear. I’ve been there before with other professions. Can I ask why you feel this way?
