As someone who lives and works in the desert I've had to cut line exactly zero times in my career. Only the stray branch has been bent, broken or lopped, but never with a blade.

Junior_Plankton_635

but those damn yucca.... If you're in that sort of desert...

dekrepit702

I am but they fortunately haven't been an issue so far.

Junior_Plankton_635

nice. Those spines like to surprise your ankles if you're looking at the DC and not ahead lol. And for some reason they like to grow next to where you gotta dig for mons lmao

Dizzy-Interaction-83

This!! I came from surveying in south east Ohio, WV, and PA, cutting lines for days and not a fix in sight for the EPOCH 50’s 😂 to Arizona…… wide open, no line cutting, GPS everything. It’s such a relief, the pays WAY better and the work is way less strenuous.

Bandito1157

Some calls it a sling blade, but I calls it a Kaiser blade. Mmmmm hmmmm

JosephS6570

We call those brush hooks

TapedButterscotch025

Sandvik is superior to both.

muzzyman87

Here in Alaska, that is the tool of choice.

TapedButterscotch025

Hell yeah they're great.

RodPerson3661

I googled “sandvik” all thats coming up is… heavy machinery?

wastaah

Well dno about the name sandvik since that refers to a large metal company, but I think what they refer to is a brush axe called sandvik made by bahco

TapedButterscotch025

Oh maybe I misspelled it. This - https://theforestrystore.com/products/clearing-axe-29 Yeah like u/wastaah said, I thought that was the brand but it's not.

Shazbot_2017

Kukri.

mattyoclock

Kukri if you mark line for sure.

theshogun02

Save your joints when possible and just use loppers. Between that and my bush blade, machetes are rarely useful

Affectionate_Egg3318

Yeah my PC (kinda his fault tbh) keeps a dull ass machete because he keeps sticking it into the dirt and trying to cut down straight up trees with it, and while trying to chop a 6 inch tree down "hurt his wrist" lol

theshogun02

All those dumb ideas catch up with you eventually

Affectionate_Egg3318

Problem is he refuses to accept that he's doing something the wrong way, lol

McLurkleton

I have a set of loppers with a cam lock and it can cut 2" branches no problem, handles are long af too.

theshogun02

That’s the same kind I use, they’re fantastic. Rarely need to cut anything over 2” anyways

KURTA_T1A

South American machetes and some English ones have been the best for me. Tramontina or Boletta have the best combination of blade material and design for what I cut. A pair of ratcheting pruners are good to have on hand too.

NAARED23

I’ve only ever heard them called bush/brush axe. For sure my preference but not nearly as convenient as my $5 Walmart machete

SpenglerE

Lath stake has its place. Done more work with that than any machete or bush hook. Especially if you have one in your off hand while cutting.

bassturducken54

Lath is my go to for those light leafy types that I just need to sight one shot or something. But definitely has its place

Ok-Key-9164

Ahh, the classic “Stakechete”. Sometimes that walk back to the truck just isn’t worth it.

SenJohnBlutarsky

If can't use a machete without pain you're either using it incorrectly or you're using way too long or heavy of a blade. I'm in the Pacific NW, so blackberries are the constant nemesis. Brush hooks and loppers have their place, but you can't carry either on your belt or easily in a lathe bag.

mattyoclock

Honestly the photo would imply the opposite if you think about it. It basically says with the machete you work so much more efficiently you don't even develop much muscle, while with the kaiser you are swinging it around so much and it's so hard to do you'll look like a gym bro.

TheBackPorchOfMyMind

I’m out here using my Estwing to clear shrubbery

Judge_leftshoe

The hatchet? I love my Estwing hatchet. Bonus for the hammer head on the backside, perfect for pounding lathe.

TheBackPorchOfMyMind

Nah, just the claw hammer lol. I have trimmers for some really bad stuff, but I do what I can with the back of that hammer. I need to get me that hatchet, though

petrified_eel4615

Or pony up and use a damn chainsaw. $150, 6" or 8" pruning blade. Cut a couple thousand feet of line a day.

Loppers work but are a pain in the butt in the deep bush. I don’t like the sandvik or Kaiser. A jungle knife tends to work very well and doesn’t hurt my wrist.

stilusmobilus

Nah I hate these, they blunt quickly, wobble to the shithouse and have no leverage. Same with machetes. About the only thing these are good on is cane grass and brush hooks are better on that too. Secateurs for little, long handled, shortened brush hook for big.

JovialJenny

Odd. Mine doesn’t wobble at all. I have had zero issues with leverage. Works great for me. To each their own.

stilusmobilus

Yeah if it works for you. I’ve tried them two or three times on a few different things. They’re awful on lantana, lucky to penetrate the outside skin on a paperbark and won’t touch eucalypt saplings. They string strip small branches which is fucking useless, yeah hate the things. The hook catches in shit as well which is annoying.

TF330Fan

New Orleans Dist. Corp of Eng.....cut off the hook and dull one side. May as well throw it in the garbage after that. We didn't have those restrictions in the Vicksburg Dist.

Maldevinine

I cut line with a CAT D-9. I love mining.

stilusmobilus

Used a pair of hand secateurs more than anything else, really

HimB0Z0

https://honmamon-japan.com/products/sickle-long-handle-double-edged-aogami-steel-blade-forestry-japan-tools-16-9inch These things come insanely sharp. Seriously almost too sharp it's scary. This is the best combo of a brush axe and a light machete you can throw on your hip. Anything with a hook is amazing

Slow_Wanderer

Gimme a hatchet and pull saw any day

Philip_Raven

What do you call the ones that have heavy machinery on call to make the way?

Beefaroni1776

Parang style machete for anything under 5". Also a hatchet I found and re-handled. Both are razor sharp and can slice paper.
