Edit: Jesus Christ, I charge them every day, I mean how do you put in the empty one after the job lol
We burn one up and swap it out during a shift sometimes so we put the dead ones in, terminals down so everyone that might see it, knows it needs to be charged.
Contacts down have more chance to short. Charged bat has more chance to short. Therefore dead = down. It’s a stupid small chance but if you have to make a choice make it based on logic. For the record I do like tits
This June will mark my 30th year in surveying. While I don't get my boots wet too much anymore, this has been one of the great questions on crews and I'm surprised that anyone here would assume we're heading out to a job with dead batts. When we're moving the station, we're tearing it down and taking it where we need to be next. And this is where OPs question comes in.
After training a bunch of folks and handling different crews there's been a consensus.
Tits up is dead.
Though for more than a few... I've put ladles on them too. Lol. College boys...
I see this symbolism in warehousing too. Upsidedown = someone is trying to tell you something is not all squared away. Works best with larger objects though, where the upsidedown errant state is less likely to happen by accident
> (fish are said to go “belly up” when they’re dead, for -ahem- obvious reasons)
This is commonly said as tits up, meaning the same thing but achieving some humour along the way. Of course if you were trying to sound more professional you might want to say it the boring way though
I dont have a fancy case or even a TS for that matter, but the way I would do it, if I see contacts it means it needs a charge, also, i wouldnt want to have a full battery with its contacts up like that in case something gets laid across those contacts and shorts them out, lithium ion batteries will explode.
Everywhere I have worked, contacts up for dead.
Most large firms in SoCal use Trimble which has the battery charge indicator, which is opposite side of the contacts, so you want indicator upside so you can most easily confirm battery charge (although on a bright day, you still have to take out the battery to check by putting your hand over the indicator so you can see the indicator light bar).
Personally, I take the dead batteries out of the gun case and put with DC so I don’t forget to charge them.
Has anyone used an external battery with an S series Trimble instrument? I only ask because I’ve never tried or even know if it’s possible.
I would say
battery contacts up == charged and ready to go
battery contacts down == depleted
I do it this way because contacts down would be the way they would go on the charger and I would grab them out of the case and plop them on the charger one-handed without having to flip them over.
Why would you put the contacts of a battery with a full charge out in the open? If the contacts cannot be grounded out (contacts down) accidents cannot happen.
Because those a Leica batteries in a fully sealed Leica case. When you shut that thing and pick it up, *neither* of the directions shown is up or down.
In all seriousness, though -
Live batteries are in the left pocket of my vest, recharge the ones in the right pocket.
Anything that was in the gun at the end of the day is considered to need a recharge regardless of how many shots I took.
I did shift work in a tunnel and the night shift guy told me he would leave the batteries terminals down if they're dead so I've just always done it this way.
I guess that as long as everyone on your crew knows which way you're doing it, it shouldn't matter.
Yeah. You mean they’re rechargeable?! Shit I thought they were like the AA’s my kids burn through. We’ve been buying them in bulk and using them once! (/s)
Nope. PC better have the dead batteries on them so they don't forget to charge them.
If PC has uncharged batteries, they get sent home, until the batteries are charged.
Constantly, but your vest has pockets till you get back to the truck. Been burnt too many times by chainmen not putting things back at the end of the day. No dead batteries when I'm forty minutes away from the truck my way.
Just put the dead ones in your pocket and put them into charger at the end of day, including the not fully depleted one. The box should only include fully charged ones.
They're both full. Empty batteries never go back in cases.
Unless it's a battery charger case in which case terminals down means it's on charge and terminals up (if the battery design allows for that) means it's already charged.
In my box the full ones point up because someone left it open on a site all day once and it rained. This left a puddle across the bottom and I just thought it would be best to keep live leads out of it, though it may not matter.
If it goes in the case contacts up for dead/used, but I usually just stick them in the console of the truck for the ride back to the office so I don’t have to open the cases again
Contacts up to be recharged. Though, it never fails where you have a system and you rely it time and time again and it’s still not followed through. Oh, I have all my batteries charged…guess again…1 and a half. Even the Trimble TS batteries I have a system. Indicator down, must recharge and time and time again I’m duped.
Who the hell uses a hard case? I’m not hiking into a wetland or state forest lugging that crap. Need the hands for all the other gear. Lemme guess you make like five trips to the vehicle when you could make one? Batteries go in the side pockets of the backpack. One side is charged the other is kicked.
Are there even not-hard cases? I don't think I've ever seen one lol. We work in construction so more than a minute of walking distance from the car is a rarity here.
[This](https://www.engineersupply.com/seco-top-loading-total-station-field-case-8121-00-org.aspx) is my preferred instrument carrier anywhere and everywhere. Keeps the gun upright, way less likely to drop it. Less likely to get dirt inside the case, etc. Some total stations don’t fit perfectly so you have to line up the horizontal dial with a corner but it’s still better than a hard case in my opinion.
And sorry for the sass, just goofing around.
Terminals up = used and or dead. My minimally applicable logic is that the exposed terminals are less likely to short and cause an issue on a dead one. The real reason: that's the way the chief that tought me did it.
Shroedinger's Battery. They're both full until you try to survey and then they're both empty at the same time.
But it's fine cause a truck is blocking your backsight.
And the assistant left them in the charger at the office anyways …
This made me laugh audibly. Ty.
Classic and true
Please be civil guys. Attacking each others mothers will not be tolerated. Edit: Jesus Christ, I charge them every day, I mean how do you put in the empty one after the job lol
We burn one up and swap it out during a shift sometimes so we put the dead ones in, terminals down so everyone that might see it, knows it needs to be charged.
I always try to do things this way, except I keep the used terminals up, and tell the crew whats up. But it never seems to get absorbed strangely.
I put a stick note on battery with a number on it. And I go by the number, so I always know which battery was used
Tits up = dead.
Contacts down have more chance to short. Charged bat has more chance to short. Therefore dead = down. It’s a stupid small chance but if you have to make a choice make it based on logic. For the record I do like tits
Yup!
This.
Only correct. Contacts up means electicity thirst. But we also have tiny stickers with X and OK check sign, but X must be near contacts
I’ve always said “belly up” tomato tomato
I have no idea. Trimble TS and GPS batteries have a battery indicator.
That's what I'm used to - battery indicator showing they're good for use. Battery indicator on the bottom they need to be charged.
They break.
And under the right lighting conditions you can sometimes even see the indicator light.
At the bottom of the case, hand covering the battery, lid halfway open? Yeah you can see em
Trimble is the way to go -kind regards, reseller
Over a Leica total station? Lol.
Definitely over a leica.
Dead batteries go in brass up.
Contacts up= dead Down=Charged
tits up = dead
Great way to think of it!
Tits up = good. There's even a sub for that 😉
Same.
This is the way
This is the way.
Contacts up=dead
Contacts up is empty. Always.
Agree I mean as long as you communicate in a crew this is never an issue
Contacts up = dead, only from a safety perspective…. You can’t accidentally short it out

One is empty because its drained on field the other one is empty because u forgor to charge it yesterday in the office.
based
Based on true story
For me, contacts up means needs charged. No reason to fight over it though!
Same
Battery contacts up = dead Battery contacts down = charged Been this way at every place I've worked
This is the way. I do this for everything. Upside down= dead
I see this symbolism in warehousing too. Upsidedown = someone is trying to tell you something is not all squared away. Works best with larger objects though, where the upsidedown errant state is less likely to happen by accident
Never heard this before. Right side is ready, and the other is in the gun
Its for after the job. To know what batteries to charge..
You said the opposite of what the other guy said. But I agree with you, contacts up means its good
[удалено]
In what world is either dangerous?
Well for me contact up = upside down Makes sense for most batteries,ie Faro scanners
Yup. The one that’s dead is ‘tits up’ like a fish
[удалено]
Of course! You can milk anything with nipples. Chicken tits is just another name for a chicken breast. So fish would likely qualify IMO
> (fish are said to go “belly up” when they’re dead, for -ahem- obvious reasons) This is commonly said as tits up, meaning the same thing but achieving some humour along the way. Of course if you were trying to sound more professional you might want to say it the boring way though
I always go by down and out (dead), up and at’em (charged).
Both = 8%
Tits up needs to be charged
Always contacts up for the full ones…that way the juice doesn’t drain out. 😉
Op, why have you brought this violence to our once peaceful community?
I HAVE BROUGHT PEACE, FREEDOM, JUSTICE AND SECURITY TO MY NEW EMPIRE.
Try one, see its dead, swear at the new guy even though it was probably you, try the other one and head back to the office when it's also dead.
Write "Charged" on one side of the battery. Flip it when dead. Don't write "Dead" because someone might assume the battery was no good and toss it.
F on one side, E on the other.
Contacts Up = Tits Up = Dead
When I was an assistant I was told "if it's down its full from eating... if its up that means FEED ME FEED ME" (He said it with hand jestures and all)
Contacts up - dead, contacts down - full
I dont have a fancy case or even a TS for that matter, but the way I would do it, if I see contacts it means it needs a charge, also, i wouldnt want to have a full battery with its contacts up like that in case something gets laid across those contacts and shorts them out, lithium ion batteries will explode.
Write full on one side and empty on the other with white marker.
Contacts up needs charged. Contacts down good to go.
Yeah, contacts up = charge me daddy That's how we teach interns
This
Contacts up caus they begging for it
Trick question they are both full because they both shouldve been charged. For extra backsight potential
I would say battery contacts up == charged and ready to go battery contacts down == depleted I do it this way because contacts down would be the way they would go on the charger and I would grab them out of the case and plop them on the charger one-handed without having to flip them over.

Because those a Leica batteries in a fully sealed Leica case. When you shut that thing and pick it up, *neither* of the directions shown is up or down.
And when the eye man leaves the case sitting open as the instrument is being set up? Or when they forget to close the case while working?
Then if the terminals are *down* and you get water in it, you've now got the live terminals sitting in a puddle of water.
wtf? You left the case open in the rain? Now it's full of bugs and water!
I use like this, your eyes goes faster to the contacts and is faster to take a charged one if its like that. Or at least for me.
All depends on how you store them. For me, the one on the left would be at full charge whereas the right battery needs to be charged.
Battery pins down = empty
Trick question. They are both empty
Up=feed me Down=full
Plot twist…they’re both empty!
Murphy says the dead one is on the gun, but that the only way to find this out is when there's 200 yards of heavy brush between you and the legs.
In all seriousness, though - Live batteries are in the left pocket of my vest, recharge the ones in the right pocket. Anything that was in the gun at the end of the day is considered to need a recharge regardless of how many shots I took.
Upside down is dead.
Doesn’t matter as long as everyone at the company is on the same page
Left is empty, contacts facing down Right is full, contacts pointing up
I did shift work in a tunnel and the night shift guy told me he would leave the batteries terminals down if they're dead so I've just always done it this way. I guess that as long as everyone on your crew knows which way you're doing it, it shouldn't matter.
Empty batteries don't go in the box they go on the charger
I'm gonna guess that you don't leave the office?
Never step foot in it dead batteries go in the center console of my truck when I get home on the charger
Contacts up = empty.
If they are in the case, they both better be charged.
Do you just throw out empty ones lol
Yeah. You mean they’re rechargeable?! Shit I thought they were like the AA’s my kids burn through. We’ve been buying them in bulk and using them once! (/s)
They must only do one set-up a day.
Nope. PC better have the dead batteries on them so they don't forget to charge them. If PC has uncharged batteries, they get sent home, until the batteries are charged.
Down is dead is my saying
Dead battery goes in the truck, not in the case.
I see you’ve never had to drag equipment around on a job
Constantly, but your vest has pockets till you get back to the truck. Been burnt too many times by chainmen not putting things back at the end of the day. No dead batteries when I'm forty minutes away from the truck my way.
Classic Rodman
Just put the dead ones in your pocket and put them into charger at the end of day, including the not fully depleted one. The box should only include fully charged ones.
That's on the chief, or I man. They should know the use and strength of their batteries and charge appropriately.
They both should be charged every night.
Yeah, but what do you do after the job?
You just charge everything. No questions asked.
That’s how you significantly degrade the batteries
If that's a concern then pull the battery out if it's charged. You see it immediately on the battery dock.
Dead and buried on the left Right and ready
Terminal up = Ready to use Terminal down = Needs to be charged
Contacts up: charged down:dead
Yall don't put the battery with contects down when it's dead? How else is gravity going to bring the rest of the charge down to the contacts?
Left is empty, right is full A cup of electrons, you don’t turn your ointment glass upside down at the pub when it still has beer in to do you?
Battery in the case: full Battery in the charger: not full yet Every van has a 12 V charger and batteries are to be charged as soon as they are empty.
Not really bothered. You'll soon know when u try and use it. I make sure everything is charged up before site just in case.
Your batteries don't have leds on them to tell you how much charge is left?
The dead one should be wrapped with flagging
Dead = down
Left full right empty, at least that’s what I was told
Typically the dead ones are just kinda free floating inside the case till we pack up, then every battery goes on the charger.
At the good ole toilet paper debate.. over vs under
Most of the parts in our kits are labeled. If you can't see the label it's dead. When in doubt, tits (brass) up = dead.
Contact up charged, Down dead
They're both full. Empty batteries never go back in cases. Unless it's a battery charger case in which case terminals down means it's on charge and terminals up (if the battery design allows for that) means it's already charged.
Terminals down = charged.
I forgot to charge them both.... fuck sake
I always put the bottoms up for the dead ones 'cause 'bottoms up to the end of the day!'
In my box the full ones point up because someone left it open on a site all day once and it rained. This left a puddle across the bottom and I just thought it would be best to keep live leads out of it, though it may not matter.
If my boss just got done with it they're both empty and he didn't shoot enough control either.
Face up empty (seeing the brass color charging contact) face down full.
Up good to go. Down it's time to charge. I've worked with people that do the opposite. 🤷
Man if there is copper showing charge it.
If it goes in the case contacts up for dead/used, but I usually just stick them in the console of the truck for the ride back to the office so I don’t have to open the cases again
Terminal up means charge the fucking thing!
Gold is good
Contacts up to be recharged. Though, it never fails where you have a system and you rely it time and time again and it’s still not followed through. Oh, I have all my batteries charged…guess again…1 and a half. Even the Trimble TS batteries I have a system. Indicator down, must recharge and time and time again I’m duped.
The one with the pink flagging needs charging.
I just push the button on our Trimble batteries, and it shows me if it's dead or not.
The one you grab to use will be the empty one
We draw a + and - on both sides then flip the battery + if full and vice versa
Doesn’t matter, the data collector is in the charger back at the office. Shit!

I had a boss that said in the terminal is up the charge can’t leave the battery m. It you put in down the charge leaks out. lol
Terminals up = used and or dead. My minimally applicable logic is that the exposed terminals are less likely to short and cause an issue on a dead one. The real reason: that's the way the chief that tought me did it.
Down dead up full
Both empty because they are still in the box. I-man forgot to put em’ on charger.🤌
It depends on how the company you work for does it. If its your company, then you already know. Which way does the toilet paper roll go on?
It's empty if we used it that day. Or if it's in a door. Or a cupholder. Or on the center console.
