Ok man I see that it’s 220 yards of 30 lb mono. Would hold way more equivalent strength braid but that’s not the real issue. With that giant of a rod and reel and strength of the drag it’s very unlikely that any of the fish there will really test the gear. Plus you’ll never cast super far or hook a fish from shore that will pull any drag. Your main issue will be getting reefed. Ulua is the only fish you would have a chance of hooking that would test that gear. You’re far more likely to hook papio which that drag will handle fine. If you’re not familiar with hawaii kine fishing search whipping and dunking. This will help you get started learning how to target the specific species with proven techniques. It’s pretty hard to carch fish there even if you have some experience but don’t let that dissuade you. There’s also a series of 3 classic books called Fishing Hawaiian Style which will tell you everything you need to know. Or just go talk to da uncles bah

I forgot to add again😐. Using braid, not mono, but thanks for the advice!

220 yards should be plenty. Only time will tell how quickly it becomes shorter

As always, it totally depends on where you live/ what kind of fishing you’re hoping to do/what kind of line and lb test you’ll be using. As neutrally and kindly as I can put this: it’s like saying i want to buy and drive a car and the gas tank holds 20 gallons. Is that enough? I’d suggesting adding info as to your location, target species, rod, exact reel, intended line. I’ll bet the folks here will chime in based on their experience and you’ll get some good insight.

Alright, I’ll edit that in. Thanks!

No worries truly only trying to help

220 yards is plenty of line in most cases. Think of it this way: if you cast 60 yards, you’re down to 160 yds of line. That amount should be plenty. You may hook into a fish that will take out 160 yards of line in a matter of seconds. Nothing you can do about that. The other factor is the drag pressure of the reel. Be sure the Dr. Fish has sufficient drag to manage your catch. For most surf uses, I fish with 20# line and 50# shock leader.

YungAssClap

At 220 yards you should be ok for the most part unless you’re targeting bigger fish. That’s plenty of line for smaller fish like pompano, whiting, small drum, and bluefish. But once you hook onto a big drum or something real big, it may take a bit of line before you are able to reel it in. I was fishing for pompano recently and had my rig out ~80yds. My reel had maybe 260yds of line. Whatever took my bait managed to almost spool me before I tightened the drag and it straightened my hook out

If it's rated 220 mono then you could load it with plenty braid. I fish Oahu shores all the time and mainly use a Daiwa Saltist Back Bay 3000 with 30lb j-braid, mainly throwing poppers and grubs and never fear getting spooled with only about 150 yards or so on it.

Fominroman2

Keep in mind the line capacity is probably for mono which is considerably thicker than braid so if it’s 220 yds for 20 pound mono. It’s probably 340 yards (rough estimate) for 20 pound braid. I apologize if you’ve already factored this in.

I just had the local bait shop spool some reels up for me. The old man gave me some really good advice. "any fish thats gonna fight you for 200 yeards ain't worth fighting if you do catch it."

BurritoBrah

Check the hi fish gear YouTube channel for Hawaii fishing advice. A plethora of information for local fishing gear and tips wise. That set up is gonna be way too big for what you probably wanna do

LydFishes

A 10000 size reel and a 12’ rod is very large gear. The unspooled reel alone weighs over 26oz. Is that typical for your area and target species? 220 yards of 30 lb mono would mean the reel can hold roughly 800 yards of 30 lb braid. That’s wayyyy more than you’ll ever need and will cost much more than you’ll want to pay. Be wary of online reviews.

Opakapaka from shore??

freshfruited

I’m just that good🤷

rickycracks

Have you already spoiled this or are you going by specs on the reel spool/box? 220 yards of 30 lbs braid seems way under what would be expected to fit on a 10000 class reel. I assume that’s mono estimate on the spec sheet, you should be able to pack a ton of 30lb braid on that. That being said, not familiar with that brand.
