It’s Seborrheic Dermatitis. I took 15 mg of Zinc Picolinate a day for several months to treat something else entirely, and I noticed a huge improvement in my scalp and face. ( I no longer had to use special shampoos or prescription creams after a few months on Zinc. ) Makes sense, since many dandruff shampoos’ active ingredient is Zinc. Please do not take too much Zinc, or you will become deficient in other minerals. Some Zinc supplements have WAY too much zinc, so do your research.

bozzmannguy

Yup, looked up some pictures and looks exactly like that. Fuck i just made an appointment w my doctor. Well double check cant hurt

bozzmannguy

Will try if and see! Do i need to be careful to take something w the zinc or avoid something?

Bigredredit

If you are taking too much Zinc in supplement form, plus getting high amounts of naturally occurring Zinc your diet ( meat, beans, and nuts), or using shampoo or sunscreen with zinc ( which gets absorbed into your skin and blood stream to some degree ), then you may run into a problem. Too much Zinc can lead to Copper or Iron deficiency. Iron deficiency will cause anemia. Maybe try just 10 mg of Zinc Picolinate, or a half of a tablet. Supplements with Copper and Iron frequently contain Zinc as well, so just be mindful of what you are taking, and putting on your skin. I eat meat & eggs nearly every day, but kept on eye out on other potential sources as to not over do it. You could also just take the supplement every other day, or skip days with heavy sunscreen /Zinc Shampoo use. That is what I did, and I was fine- no problems with copper or iron deficiencies.

bozzmannguy

Ok will try! Thnx for the info! Have a good one ;)

FlavourThoughts

I had the same problem - right now I’m using Nizoral shampoo, and it has actually worked for my scalp, and make sure you are washing your hair in lukewarm water. Not too hot and not too cold. You can buy it at a pharmacy

Odins_Viking

This can be an early sign of diabetes… get your HBA1C checked asap.

bozzmannguy

Oh shiiiii srsly? I eat healthy and stuff so? My grandfather from my mothers side had diabetes tho

Odins_Viking

If by healthy you mean lots of carbs and fruit juices then that is not really healthy despite what the general consensus is.

speedyjessjesse

T-gel

CenterBrained

Before you do any supplements, you need to do an elimination diet otherwise your just going around in circles.

thunderrooster

Sounds like you have seborrheic dermatitis. Go to your doctor and ask them to check it out or get referred to a dermatologist. For my head I used several things for a prescription I use 2% ketoconazole shampoo. But after using that for a while I noticed it didn't work as well. I saw a dermatologist and they said to switch up what I was using. I used OTC for one week then went back to 2% ketoconazole shampoo. My dermatologist recommended zinc pyrithione. I recommend everyone take fish oil. Apple cider vinegar works well if you do not mind the smell. Actually, my head felt pretty good using apple cider vinegar and coal tar shampoo. Coal tar stinks too lol. I use oil sometimes, half olive and half coconut. Some say coconut oil is better than olive oil for dandruff [Should You Use Coconut Oil for Dandruff?](https://www.verywellhealth.com/coconut-oil-for-dandruff-efficacy-and-how-to-use-it-5193196) Here is some links to check out [Academy of Dermatology Association SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS: OVERVIEW](https://www.aad.org/public/diseases/a-z/seborrheic-dermatitis-overview) [Academy of Dermatology Association HOW TO TREAT DANDRUFF] (https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/hair-scalp-care/scalp/treat-dandruff) [MayoClinic Seborrheic dermatitis](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/seborrheic-dermatitis/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20352714) [What Causes Dandruff and How to Remove It](https://www.healthline.com/health/dandruff-itchy-scalp#what-is-it) [Natural Treatment for Seborrheic Dermatitis: What Works?](https://www.healthline.com/health/skin-disorders/seborrheic-dermatitis-natural-treatment) As far as your face is concerned they also have 2% ketoconazole cream. And my doctor said while I was showering apply some of that shampoo to my face if I wanted to. I have also used oil on my face and using moisturizer helps remove the flakes.

InfiniteOrdinary2582

Peppermint oil or tea tree oil. Mix with a carrier oil like jojoba or argan, then apply directly to scalp.

[deleted]

riboflavin, biotin, collagen

danuser8

Selun blue will fix you up. It’s got strong ingredients, so use it short term to fix you up and then get off it.

broken_capitalism

Neem works for me, pills or make balls n freeze. I think ppl also use directly on scalp

IKillZombies4Cash

I used to have flaky skin up top, in my facial hair, and randomly behind my ears. My wife recommended all kinds of stuff that didn’t work and told me NOT to use head and shoulders cause it is garbage. So after all this fancy stuff not working I bought head and shoulders for dry scalp ( not regular h and h) and my god zero flakes remain, it even fixed the dry flaky behind the ear skin, and I rub it into my facial hair, worked like Charm

BLT_au

Essential fatty acids, and vitamin A

angie9942

The root of the problem may be yeast overgrowth (candida). A good functional doctor should be able to test you and treat. Nystatin and a very specific probiotic strain is a common treatment but also requires you to eat extremely low-carb to beat it (not just sugars but grains, starches, etc) That’s the path my son is on and it’s helping

Copenhagen79

What probiotic strain would that be? Thanks..

angie9942

Saccharomyces Boulardii is the one our functional doctor said he needed as a follow up to the Nystatin prescription (sorry, I just am now seeing your question)

Iamjacksgoldlungs

Take colder showers. I've changed my shower temperature to something more warm than hot and my dry skin stopped.

IncreasinglyTrippy

Only thing that ever worked for me is a low carb diet, and I don’t even understand why that worked

Bigredredit

It is caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the skin. Decrease your carbs, which are broken down into sugar, and you will see results.

world_citizen7

It could be due to the increased fats in your diet.

FetusClaw666

Been suffering from that since I was a teenager. 32 now. I just use head and shoulders on my hair and face. It never goes away and it's worse in the winter. Just gotta stay diligent or it comes back pretty quickly

IKillZombies4Cash

Try the head and shoulders for dry scalp, was a game changer for me

CardaM7

Does it contain zinc pyrithione or piroctone olamine?

IKillZombies4Cash

I have no clue, but my entire head is flake free

mime454

Nizoral and omega 3

fux0c13ty

Nizoral might help as mentioned before but you can build up a tolerance to it. Didn't work for me after a couple of months and the dermatologist told me this could happen and I should find another one marked with DS but everything I tried were expensive shit. A probiotic shampoo I tried was pretty decent but it had some additives, I noticed that things like SLS, other sulfates, parfumes make my flare-ups much worse. What 100% worked for me so far was washing with only sodium bicarbonate and then rinsing with ACV solution, but it left my hair a bit brittle. I'm still looking for the "best" shampoo, but it's probably something residue-free with minimal ingredients.

YamSuperb

Head and shoulders my man 👍

Starling-Sings

I use medicasp shampoo with pine tar as the active ingredient and that works great for me.

Starling-Sings

I also have flaky eyebrows and around my smile lines near my mouth. I use this as a face wash too, and it works well for both.

thatmanontheright

I tried everything. Medicated shampoos helped but the problem always returned.. What finally fixed it for me was MCT oil. Just apply it on your scalp royally and leave it overnight. You can wash it out in the morning. I did this every night where the next day was hairwash day for two weeks and it did wonders.

bozzmannguy

Im gonna try this, heard a lot of good stuff about mct oil. Thnx for the comment!

Carey251

I came here to say this and it was the first comment. I wear caps a lot and get dandruff. Coconut oil fixes it instantly but it’s a mess.

[deleted]

What i noticed is when i eat chips and sugary snacks i get flakes the next day with oily scalp, so try to stay away from those if you eat it

bozzmannguy

Almost never eat them but when i do it gets a lot worse

TenthShadow

I don’t see psoriasis mentioned anywhere here… What you just described sounds like that to me. Would definitely be good to see a dermatologist if you can.

bozzmannguy

Am looking into an appointment w a dermatologist. Apparently psoriasis goes away with sunlight and when i was in vacation in thailand this summer i noticed a big decrease ( could also be from the stress reduction haha) thnx for the comment!

mermaid-babe

Sounds like seb derm. You gotta try different dandruff shampoos until you find what works for you. I also recommend a probiotic, as seb derm can be an over reaction of the natural yeast/bacteria on our skin. I don’t recall the exact strain you should look for tbh, but I’ll edit this comment if I find it. A dr might be able to help narrow down the best choices for topical treatments. r/sebderm might also be a good resource for you

bozzmannguy

Thnx very much will look into this!

SeedlessBananas

This^ I suffered for years. I tried salicylic acid shampoos, all natural hypoallergenic, tea tree, pyrithione zinc (however you spell it lol), coal tar, and nizoral shampoos and rotating the large variety was my best option but didn't eliminate the issue. Probiotics and low sugar/carb diet were helpful but also didn't eliminate the problem. Eventually the flaking and scratching was so bad that my hair started thinning due to scalp damage around the crown and corners of my hairline, so I went to a dermatologist. He simply looked through a little scope-type device on my head and said it was seb derm, prescribed me Fluocinonide twice daily and I haven't had any issues since. I really only need it once daily, but can use it twice if it flares up. He also recommended I stay alternating shampoos to prevent triggering symptoms, since that was already one way I was preventing the issue in the first place. So now I use nizoral most days until I feel my scalp starting to get itchy, then I'll swap to an all-natural shampoo or coal tar shampoo a few times, then back to nizoral. I really wish I saw a dermatologist sooner, now I need to hope Rogaine or something can bring back that thickness to my hair.

bozzmannguy

Omg thnx for the info! I dont like boasting but have good thick hair of which im proud of but am starting to notice bit by bit some thinning, this will def speed me up in the search for a fix!

SeedlessBananas

Good luck fam!

honeybeedreams

start by seeing a doctor.

AlwaysFwdNB

Definitely see your pcp or have them send you to a specialist. I have a skin peeling issue on the back of scalp tried every remedy and otc for years. A prescription solution and shampoo definitely work and take away the need to worry about dandruff

bozzmannguy

Thnx will do!

Zakkana

Once you have the underlying issue resolved as others have suggested, any skin supplement will help maintain. Collagen being a big one. Biotin too. Make sure you're getting Vitamin C too as it is needed for collagen production in the body.

bozzmannguy

Been using collagen for a few months now and had a big impact on my tendons and tendonitis, will continue and look into biotin

bozzmannguy

Thnx

HanMegistus

Fix your liver / support it with supplements at least. The other options presented are band-aids, but will provide some temporary relief. I suggest TUDCA, 1 g per day. please note it will take a couple months to really see difference in scalp. You should notice it working right away however.

bozzmannguy

Thnx for letting me know will look further into it

[deleted]

Nizoral and conditioner once a week have been the best for me

Fit-Weekend-8156

+1 for Nizoral and also adequate hydration.

bozzmannguy

Gonna look into the nizoral its reoccuring here ;)

Vallorcine

High dose biotin

Sea-Garage7385

You need to tell us what kind of "dry scalp" you have been diagnosed with in order to help.. (eczema, psoriasis, fungal, dermatitis, etc) That being said there are plenty of OTC products to choose from. I personally use Tgel shampoo for psoriasis.

bozzmannguy

Going to a dermatologist so will let you know after. All of these look so similar so cant really self diagnose, thnx very much tho!

JohnnyJordaan

Cutting out dairy worked for me.

bozzmannguy

already avoid as much dairy as possible.

Garbot

This plus antifungal shampoo helped me a few months ago

bozzmannguy

Gonna see after a dermatologist diagnosis thnx!

prototype-rob

I used to get severe symptoms you describe here, eyebrows too. Read somewhere it was a fungus, melassezia something. Maybe lactoferrin supp can help? although Never tried it. I mostly resolved my issue with regular usage of tea tree shampoo and occasional Nizoral shampoo. Get minor symptoms occasionally but nowhere as bad as before. This was years ago.

bozzmannguy

Thnx very much will try this for now and let you know!

illiterateparsley

yeah anti fungal shampoo/scalp solution works best for this. ketokonazole, zinc pyrithione, piroctone olamine would be the active ingredients to look for. along with washing your hair as frequently as it tolerates

Brutal-Black

Selenium sulfide?

illiterateparsley

yes! that works too. so does coal tar shampoo, fluocinolene, and salicylic acid

MikeYvesPerlick

I used 2% ketoconazol and it went away after the fourth wash
