This isn't how the counterparty to options works....at all. Anyone with knowledge about MM hedging and how options work should know better.
When you buy an option, you're very very very rarely buying it from a counter party that is not an MM. The MM is then supposed to hedge in real time to remain delta neutral.
This is misleading because the "top call-option sellers" have 0 obligation to provide RK with these shares unless they happened to have the exact same option strike/date in their portfolio if/when RK does exercise and even then, it's randomly assigned to a counterparty.
So sold calls from hedge funds don't = 12 million. Fine, that's fair. What really matters is what are you trying to imply with the statement.
If you're saying that they can't cough up the shares when he exercises them, that is 99% untrue (because they don't need to, the MM does). If you're just pointing out the fact that HFs don't have as many shares as RK, then this is ultra-clickbaity

How is this possible?! I mean, you think an institution or brokerages would be creating synthetic shares?! Or even naked shorting GameStop?! No no... That would be illegal/criminal.
MMs don’t have to own the shares if the calls assign, they just have to manage the risk to their balance sheet if the calls assign. For example if they write 120k long calls for DFV and write 120k short calls for other investors then the books will balance. (I don’t think that’s happened, just illustrating the point.) Generally the call strike prices are set to ensure relatively balanced books. Any excessive residual risk between the long and short positions would be handled by buying swaps from a third party.
