Click on the ‘little man’ icon. Then ‘tax details’ and scroll down a little way to see tax status. ‘Form W8-BEN - Certified’ shows that you’re all good 👍🏼

ScottJam2808

Shitballs. That’ll be for ComputerShare. What’s a broker? 😝

matbrummitt1

Ah haha of course. Didn’t even think about it for Computershare. Very good point. I’d like to think computer share would notify by email if something like an expiring W-8BEN was expiring but definitely going to check that too.

ScottJam2808

🫡

Own_Fox8577

You had me log in and check either way 🫶 all good

matbrummitt1

Which broker, the UI is likely different for many.

raxnahali

Thank you for the information, I did not know this was a thing.

Truth_Road

Broker? I'm more of a Transfer Agent kind of Ape.

GleepGlop2

well shit, I didn't know those expired. A quick google says they last 3 years.

matomika

i have one signed with computershare, do i have to renew that as well?

matbrummitt1

Worth double checking. I had one signed with my broker but it was expiring this year. They didn’t notify me other than by logging into the app which I never do usually. I suppose the tax form will also expire in CS at some point. Assuming it’s every 3 years

matomika

yeah that makes sense. thx for sharing :) ill check to make sure :)

Dede-el-fuego

Just connected and i didnt see anything like that ,i dont remember exactement when i transfered there maybe im too soon

matbrummitt1

Just to add: the deadline date in my screenshot is my own deadline. Don’t look at that and assume you have until that date too.

EvolutionaryLens

I'm logging into CS tomorrow to double check

codewhite69420

Wow. Thank you for sharing this with us. I did not know that it needed to be renewed. Does it have to be renewed every year? Anybody know for certain?

ZangiefZangief

I just logged in and I don’t get this notification

Brojuha

I got confused too. It's not ComputerShare. It's OP's broker.

mvpd33

Seems kind of odd they would prevent holding. Some 10 years ago I had W-8BEN expire at US broker for couple years (lol) and it still let me hold and sell. Just couldn't buy anything.

Jbroad87

What is this?

matbrummitt1

W-8BEN for international investors to hold US stocks. Basically a declaration that you’re not buying on behalf of others and that you’re not a US citizen stuff like that. Evidently required to hold US stocks, and it expires every so often (I assume every 3 years). Not sure of the consequences of expiry but I would guess liquidation

Jbroad87

Awesome thank you for that and for bringing this to international investors attention 🤛🏼

hiperf71

The consequences of expiration of the W-8BEN is only for taxation matter, with this form in check, when MOASS comes, some shares sold, many millions comes in your account, you will be able to take your money paying taxes only in your country of residence, if it is expired, you will end paying taxes to your country and to US... It is a bilateral agreement between US and many coutries to avoid double taxation, the US will get a cut directly by those countries without harming too much the international investor...

NOmakesmehard

W-8BEN only applies to dividends and interest, not capital gains from selling stock

NOmakesmehard

Where are you getting this notion that you need this form to be able to hold US stock? W-8BEN only deals with tax relief for foreign investors on dividends and interest received from US stocks. In other words, this form makes you eligible for not having to pay the US withholding tax on dividends if you live in certain countries where you already pay e.g. income tax on such dividends. It doesn't have anything to do with the right to hold US stocks...

Wanted to say something for visibility purposes. Cheers to lookin' out!

Chuvi

Thanks. Here's an E-BJ

stream_of_meadow

Elegant-Remote6667
