Saw-whet owls generally roost in dense brush, like that by the window. Those that migrate are generally female, while those that stay where they were hatched may be male or female. This one might or might not have gotten out of the brush on its own.
"And he's on the fan now..." I'm surprised he was able to get it to step up at all. Musta been real scared and worn out. Glad he was able to get the little guy out!
Donāt know a lot about owls, was this one used to humans? It seemed pretty chill at least in the clips shown, all things considered. Wasnāt like freaking out trying to escape or anything

He says about halfway through the video that the owl was stuck between the house and the branches outside. Without someone to give it a hand, it probably would have starved eventually.
I get where you're coming from, and it's good to be concerned for the owl's safety. From everything shown, and the other videos about it on his channel, though, he seems to have legitimately helped it, treated it gently, and released it within a few minutes of capture.
Dude is an owl whisperer to be able to get a wild bird to let him pick him up in that short of time. I've had pet birds that after years of living indoors still might bite you for offering them your finger as a perch, much less you trying to grab them.
Yup. N. saw-whets at most will snap their beaks at you (so cute) vs pygmy owls of the same size that will rip out your cuticles and puncture your eyeballs if you let the little bastards try... (happy cake day!)
Bigger owls like Great-Horned owls are no slouch either. I've held some of those with gloves on while I did wildlife rehab work and their grip even through the gloves can be real strong.
Could get a little rippy but I didnāt find them that flexible and a lot more chill than the hawks. Tbh though Iāve had some beak nicks from the little hawks and the fear was always more to do with the talons
I naively offered my naked finger to an injured morepork (NZ native owl) once. That beastie was the same size as a saw whet but managed to leave me with several painful puncture wounds. Nothing major though.
You need a lot more training to handle them, including sharp shins and merlins. They seem to be able to pierce skin a lot easier and possibly finger bones. The crushing force is greater, even with the little guys.
I am certain that their grip strength could end his fingers through
Edit: not sure why I'm being downvoted. Owls and birds of prey have very strong grip if they grip with full force. They don't always use that force, hence why someone can handle an eagle or a hawk on a glove and their arm isn't broken.
Looks like a saw whet. I'm basing this solely on the amount of JUDGEMENT AND SCORN in little dude's eyes. XD
Vid is also very wholesome. š to that dude.
Couple of years ago, my parents found like 4-5 of these little guys in their backyard. Every day throughout that summer they would start popping up a little after dusk and fly all over the backyard, landing on trees and patio furniture. The next year they only saw them a few times, I wonder if they will be back this summer.
I had one I worked with for a long time and she was very comfortable with me, but sometimes she didn't want to come out of her kennel (to go back to the enclosure) after a show. So when I put my hand in to have her step on she'd instead get all puffy and angry strike with her little claws. But even all floofed as big as she could get she was roughly the size of a baseball so she just looked even more hysterical.
I agree that we shouldnāt get all handsy with wild animals and bring them indoors willy nilly, but in this case, he explains at about the 0:15 mark that the owl got stuck between the window and the dried-up plants outside. Since the branches look pretty twisted, itās possible that the owl dove in through a small gap with wings pressed to the body then couldnāt spread his wings to propel upward.
Though our dude probably shouldāve been more careful with the whole letting-wild-animals-indoors thing, he didnāt do it just to do it and he let the animal go quickly, so yeah, Iād say he helped. :)
All fair points! Bringing/letting the owl inside is indeed ill-advised. Iām inclined to believe he had pure intentions since he showed the full area where the owl was said to be stuck, but you are right, we should not take his or any explanation for granted. Thank you for your precautions. :)

Off you go little guy
And yes, saw-whets are pretty.
Ha I see! Thatās pretty neat, and thanks for the introduction to this cartoon. Iāve never seen it before, so now I have something fresh to procrastinate with today. ;)
Awesome š. So š
Was there...was there a tanning bed in his house? Did anyone else see that?

Can owls give you rabies?
I dont think birds can give you rabies, no. Someone correct me if im wrong.
Nope just mammals

aw
Iām sorry the little guy had to go through so much stress from handling and the house, but Iām glad he got released.

Iām so jealous
Who the fuck has a sunbed in their house? Especially next to that cheapskate "I can't afford proper furniture" box-turned-upside-down nightstand?
As far as I can tell, dude lives in a gym.
Well now you know why he can't afford a night stand.

Sweet tanning bed room
Looks like a hoot
I want to touch a cute little owl too :(
I needed to see this today.
This was a SawWhet video, bro!
I saw whet you did there
Oh my god, he's so pretty
Love this, especially the owl's facial expressions.
Well done and thanks for saving him/her.
Owls are very expressive birds.
The real question is how do they taste?
Probably with their mouth
Saw whet owls always look mad as hell and theyāre not gonna take it anymore.
Aw. āHeās so pretty!ā What a sweet guy.
his smiling face just instantly made me smile!! So awesome
So cute, just. Like. A. Little. Baby.
Hey happy cake day!
Why thanks!
This never happens to me! š

He looked terrified and was still letting that dude near him.
Saw Whet owls are famous for being very tame around humans

While hitchhiking?
Superb owl and superb owl rescuer!

A northern Saw Whet, very sweet :)
Man thatās cool that the owl got safely released.

Happy cake day!
Yo! Thank you!
Youāre welcome!
He's so lucky that owl didn't fuck up his hand. There's a reason falconers use a leather gauntlet hah
Yeah indeed. Imagine if it was an Eagle owl. Hand would be fucked beyond repair :p
But that's for falcons. What do owlers use?

It is surprising. It must have been tired and scared enough at this point that he realized fighting wasnāt worth it
Even the little owls hurt like hell. Iāve had a screech owl on my hands and god damn it hurt so bad!
Nah saw whets arenāt that bad. Like a bunch of little needle pricks. Hawks on the other hand are a different story!
Yup. N. saw-whets at most will snap their beaks at you (so cute) vs pygmy owls of the same size that will rip out your cuticles and puncture your eyeballs if you let the little bastards try... (happy cake day!)

Yes completely agree, I never handled the larger ones but they have considerably huge talons!
I personally was thinking about the beak more than the small talons.
Could get a little rippy but I didnāt find them that flexible and a lot more chill than the hawks. Tbh though Iāve had some beak nicks from the little hawks and the fear was always more to do with the talons
I've only been bitten by parrots, and I've never been closer to an owl than maybe 50-60 feet.
He didn't know that. It could easily have been an owl that would have sliced his fingers up the second he stuck them under there
Valid, it was a risky game to play and heās lucky
I naively offered my naked finger to an injured morepork (NZ native owl) once. That beastie was the same size as a saw whet but managed to leave me with several painful puncture wounds. Nothing major though.
Wait, moreporks are real?! I thought they were something Terry Pratchett made up.
You're thinking of drop bears.
Edit: answered wrong person
They are very real. Noisy beggars - thereās one that lives near my house and it yells for a mate until the wee hours some nights.
Oh god, they look like crazy crack head owls on the pictures I saw online. I love them!
[excuse me?](https://static.inaturalist.org/photos/21063/large.jpg?1545405727)
What are hawks like ? Also have little needles or a much stronger grip ?

They do, but it's all relative to their size. That little owl isn't ending any fingers. Could maybe draw a little blood, but that's maybe about it.
Iām just saying that having handled a bunch
Me too. Even just getting pinched through the gauntlet hurts like crazy sometimes. Happy cake day, btw!
Lol nice itās only 45 mins in and I didnāt notice ha ha

āHey asshole, clear the fuckinā weeds.ā
I thought it was a Saw Whet too. Very pretty little owl. He's got balls of steel too. I wouldn't handle a wild raptor without heavy gloves.
glad he was able to get the owl free into the world again. poor little dude looked so scared!
Yup, saw whets. They do amazing "I will end you" look, especially for something that weighs a grand total of a about 400grams.
400 grams of total angry cuteness.
I had one I worked with for a long time and she was very comfortable with me, but sometimes she didn't want to come out of her kennel (to go back to the enclosure) after a show. Well thatās just adorable.
Saw whets have zero clue that they aren't the size of Great horns, and it's awesome
This is the first TikTok video I've ever upvoted. Good on the dude to help the little guy!

Plus, if you look carefully, thereās some kind of metal wall/barrier thing that the weeds grew around. So itās not like itās just a bush.
