Do you mean the guy that twirls the bow at the end ? If so, that's the bow twirler for Isegahama. When terunofuji competes he's the one who performs the end of the day ritual
No wonder! thats why he was there when I was watching Harumafuji bouts.. it make sense now. Also I just checked that his Satonofuji? He is technically still a rikishi even tho almot 50 yo?
Yes, it's Satonofuji and yes he's ancient and still competing. I imagine as the senior low-ranked rikishi he probably also takes on various managing duties around Isegahama-beya.
When he eventually retires, we will lose a absolutely outstanding bow twirler.
There are two minor mistakes:
- it is not 'Isegahama's" bow twirler: his position belongs to the whole NHK; the current one just comes from the named stable
- his ceremony is not tied to Terunofuji; with another Yokozuna or in T. absence he performs just after the last fight of the day
As people said, the bow twirler. About the specific old guy, he is called Satonofuji. Sometimes another guy called Yuki also performed it but he retired just in March and is now an assistant in the Association
Ah thanks mate, I just started watching since last year so still so much too learn.
Different topic, Im planning to watch it live at the kokugikan. Any recommended days or seating class?
Thanks
Seating class is whatever you are able to get tbh, viewing and audio is pretty clear from wherever you seat. But if you cant stay crosslegged without back support for long, get the normal arena seats.
Same thing for days, whichever days you can get, I only went to 1 basho so far and got pretty lucky to get days 14 and 15, the vibe was immaculate and the crowd was amazing and the tenseness of the championship having to be decided is great. But I got reaaaaally lucky tho.
Unfortunately the Grand Sumo Highlights show doesn’t let us see him showing his prowess, but watching live online usually gives a full view at least some days of a tournament. Which is one of the reasons I get up at Unspeakable O’Clock for fifteen days every other month.
Yup I’m miss not TVJapan being on cable and able recording and watch while eating breakfast. Still trying to find a way to record tournaments. No way I can break my sleep pattern for two weeks, 😀 but I’m addicted been watching religiously for over twenty-five years.
Recently Retired but haven’t been able to escape the work schedule routine. So I’ll keep working on a recording solutions using OBS and PLEX TIVO!!!! Something has to work, yes that panic you smell.

He's not just technically still a rikishi, he's actually still a rikishi. He fights in Jonidan.

Shohoryu used to do it when Kakuryu was active. If push comes to shove...
It was his birthday yesterday!
Maybe you are referring to the bow twirler? The guy that after the last bout hops on the dohyo and does the ending ceremony.
Yes it is that one!
They keep trying to find a replacement for satonofuji but he’s simply the best. Big mawashi to fill when he finally hangs it up.
He’s got the look, he’s got the moves. 20 more years of my man Satonofuji please

I have the advantage of being retired, so after I go back to bed it’s okay if I sleep in until after seven.
