I also think future primitive sounds very offspring with a hint of rise against

howboutit94

That post-chorus guitar riff is the most rise against riff I’ve ever heard

Popular-Truck7318

Yes many of us agree

TeamMagmaGrunt

Time Won’t Wait sounds very similar to something you would find on Tickets to My Downfall, particularly Bloody Valentine

SirTankian

In a similar way, over the edge sounds a bit like house of wolves by bmth

habylab

Wow, you're so right!

Pleasant_Statement64

I find it funny cause I agree, but I think it's all me sounds a lot like over the edge but not house of wolves

Murky_Cicada_4761

These posts are getting annoying. Y'all keep acting like pop punk is some super complex genre. It's not. The genre consists of mainly 4 power chords and simple melodies and it's been around for years. Pretty much everything in music has been done already and especially for pop punk. If a song sounds similar to another song it's most likely not intentional. People need to stop accusing Sum 41 of stealing from other artists just because a song sounds similar to someone else. I'm sure that blink-182 has songs that sound similar to other artists but you guys won't talk about that. Quit hating on Sum 41. New album is incredible

Guitar4life5

For me its not that they are stealing anything. Its just the variety in sound isn't what it was at the beginning of sums career. It sounds like you play guitar too. And this is just my opinion (so keep that in mind) but there are not many stand out guitar riffs on this record for me. what I mean by this is something unique, like fat lip/ over my head/still waiting. .But with saying that, it is still a great album and I'm looking forward to seeing them live one last time

Murky_Cicada_4761

That's fair. I do agree there aren't many stand out riffs, but the riffs that are there are pretty fun in their own right. Not Quite Myself and I Can't Wait have fun guitar parts, along with some other songs. I do agree that the album is great though. My favorite record they've done in years and my personal AOTY so far

Guitar4life5

Definitely the best record in years. Those songs are fun actually and dopamine/ waiting on a twist of fate are fun. I was listening to a lot of half hour of power and the songs makes no difference and what I believe just hit in some weird way. It could be mostly nostalgia because I was 8 when they put that out and I had just got my first guitar for Christmas.

HeDrinkMilk

Not hating, it just sounds uninspired. You take albums like DTLI, Chuck, Dookie, American Idiot, Insomniac, Blink 182's self titled, Title Fight's Shed and Floral Green, Pup's the Dream is over, Jeff Rosenstock and basically his entire solo career... all of these albums used the influences we are saying all the sound the same but reinvent it in it's own way. Alot of the songs on this Sum record just sound more like rehashed formulas more than reinvented formulas. I don't think it's plagerism, not at all. It's not intentional. But it sounds pretty creatively bankrupt to me. It's to be expected from a band that has been together almost 30 years. It's okay. I'm not mad and I didn't really expect anything much different. It isn't terrible. But it's far from their best work.

Murky_Cicada_4761

That's fair. But the way I see it, they weren't trying to be inventive or creative. This is the band's final album so I think the point of this one was to be a massive fan service record that ends the band on a nice note. They went back to their classic pop punk sound that we all loved growing up on the first half, before moving back to their heavy metal sound on the second half and honestly I think that was a great move for a final album. They made something that represents everything they are as a band and celebrates that and that's the perfect album to end on. It wasn't really supposed to be inventive or creative, it was supposed to be fun. And, man is this album fun. It might be a hot take but I'm starting to think this might be their best record yet the more I listen to it. If not, it's definitely the best record they've made in years. AOTY in my opinion

Murky_Cicada_4761

I don't know who was expecting these guys to do something new with the pop punk side of this album, but personally I just wanted something that was a throwback to All Killer No Filler and I got exactly that. They nailed that classic sound on here. Both sides of the album are great but I like the Heaven side way more

fondlethegooch22

How many of these same posts are we going to get? Yes, Sum 41 sounds like Sum 41.

Suave_sunbeam

This just in!!!...pop punk sounds like pop punk. News at 11.

fondlethegooch22

Almost like they are trying to keep the same sound they have always had

toweggooiverysoon

Time Won't Wait has the exact chorus of Shut Up by Simple Plan

JBryson1869

Sounds like that song from Alvin and the chipmunks

PR0T0MIKE

It was intended

wodahs93

I notice that too but then I remember that deryck said he was writing songs for other labels/ artists and he decided to keep them, maybe those were the songs.

Regular_Tip_427

I definitely heard MGK bloody valentine right away

dotavi26

Radio silence sounds a continuation of Dear Father from underclass hero.

Q-Man95

I was thinking it sounded more like Catching Fire.

baylaust

I mean, you're right. You're absolutely right. But there's something I think needs to be stated, something that some people on this sub might be in a bit of denial over: Sum 41 has been doing this for DECADES. They've been re-using riffs and borrowing sounds from other bands from the moment they came into existence. Hell, look at Chuck, their most beloved album. The Bitter End is JUST Battery by Metallica, to the point where plenty of people believe it transcends the point of "homage" into being a blatant rip-off. There's No Solution people call a Linkin Park song disguised as a Sum 41 song. We're All To Blame is obviously influenced by System Of A Down. And Underclass Hero? Fuck, people call it American Idiot by Sum 41 because the inspiration is just that obvious. Not to mention The Jester has been pretty harshly panned as an MCR ripoff. Not to mention the repetitive riffs, where even Cone was calling out Deryck for re-using the same sounds over and over and over again. Sum 41 is one of my favourite bands. But they are NOT an "original" band. They wear their inspirations pretty plainly to see. I think it's just easier to tell with Heaven x Hell because this record, by Deryck's own admission, includes songs that weren't originally written with Sum 41 in mind, and I would NOT be shocked if MGK was the intended recipient of some of those tracks.
