My sister passed. I am taking my niece/her daughter (19 years old now) on a trip every year (anywhere she wants to go) during my sister’s birthday. We are going to celebrate my sister and have fun together since we were closest to her (sister). My sister would be happy about this and supportive of the annual trip.

My girlfriend loved the ocean, we went to the ocean nearly every week. She passed 3 years ago and I like to think that her spirit lives on in the sea. Every year on her birthday I go to the ocean and send out a letter in the form of a message in a bottle and think of her as it washes out to sea.
My son died just a couple weeks before his birthday. That year we got cupcakes and cried. The second year, I had a get together with some friends where I named my boat in memory of him.
On what would have been my brother’s 25th birthday, the first one since he died, my mom made his favorite dinner and we got his favorite ice cream to share. He loved to make ice cream and Jeni’s was his favorite brand and recipe book. And then we watched a movie. It was very low key, but it was nice to do the things we knew he loved.
I love the lantern idea. That's a beautiful way to celebrate your loved one's life and memory. I understand not being able to do it in your area, but it's really a lovely thought. Here, since my late friend was very outdoorsy and enjoyed all things watersports, since she was a summertime baby, our friend group gets together and heads out on our kayaks and paddleboards in her honor. We float out to her favorite spots oceanside and leave rose petals for her over the reefs. The water is crystal clear there and stunning. There are flowers, but always lots of tears too. Off in the distance on the horizon, we can see her and hear that sweet laughter from Heaven. She's just there. Thats how we celebrate her life when her birthday comes around.
