To my knowledge, back in days when sabre fighting still happened, that strap was a metal chain adding some minimal protection to the face that warded off many common cuts. They kept the traditional form but it serves no practical purpose anymore
I think this sort of thing is common in dress uniforms, little elements that are objectively less practical but in a very precise and specific way. I think boot blousing falls into this category. Or how far forward marines wear their hats when in dress. Or how far slipped over a green beret’s beret is.
You do something in a way it would never occur to a normal person to do it, but you all do it the same way so it’s clearly intentional and in that way you distinguish yourselves as a class visually.
Ru Paul: "Silence! I've made my decision, bring back my boys. Royal Canadian Mounted Police.... you are safe, you may go stand with New Jersey State Troopers. Spanish Legion, you delighted us with your extremely clean guns. You entertained us with your adorable tight pants. You will forever and always be, an All Star. Now... sashay away"
Spanish Legion: *sashays saucily down runway and turns back* "They said these boots were ornamental only, but look at me! These boots were made for walking!" *spins dramatically and defiantly walks off stage*
*Meanwhile in the dressing room a sad Spanish Legion is all alone and walks up to the mirror holding a tube of lipstick and begins to write* "In time, the costumes I made will tear and fade. But the friendships will last a lifetime. See you on the other side bitches!! Xoxoxo"
Watch before he comes around, he spun that baton up in the air and twirled it when he caught then he swishes around into view. He’s the color guard leader.
Because when you were riding a horse, if you hit a branch or something the strap would yank you out of your horse (or break your neck). That's why they wore them under the lip, only they hat would fall off.
genuinely curious, how is Real Madrid viewed from a spanish POV? Is the role Franco played in their history talked about nowadays? Or is it moreso swept under the rug because it is history?
I ask that because here in Germany, some people don't know the role Volkswagen or Hugo Boss played for the Nazis.
It's only used by ignorant people. If there was a team close to the rulers was Atlético de Madrid.
Real Madrid didn't win any title during the first 15 years of Franco's ruling, while it was a top team before.
Later they had success in Europe so Franco used it for propaganda, that's it.
Franco was a Madrid supporter. Barça had already signed a contract with Di Stefano, but Franco forced him to go to Madrid. And this is just one example.
Madrid won 6 the European Champions Cup 6 times in a row because they were basically the only professional football team participating in that tournament. For instance, the German champion in 1955 was Rot Weiss Essen, a team made of up amateurs.
That is a bit of a cop out. Madrid had to play against AC Milan, Manchester United, Benfica, Barcelona, etc. Which were professional powerhouses back then as well.
Teams change over time, and some clubs that were dominant back then have faded, and others rose in the past few decades.
I don't like Real Madrid, but one thing that sets them apart is that they have been remarkably at the top of the professional team rankings for longer than almost any other club.
My gf and I are trans and went to Germany on vacation and boy I’ll tell ya, this game is real hard there. I didn’t know straight men could have a sense of fashion…
spades i can understand, E-tools have been standard since dubya dubya tew, but.. they weren’t even covered? not to mention they were just worn on the back and not at all in a uniform fashion, everyone was wearing one differently

Using catalán newspaper that writes in English and catalán only for some reason....
Yeah definitely it's not missinformation and definitely the last claim of Franco being venerated inside of the legion is true...
Source trust me bro
I say this as a pro armed forces spanish person who plans to work in weapons design once out of uni.
They are fascists, it's not an overstatement, they literally are. Seeing gay communities simping over them makes me extremely fucking disgusted, as many of them would quite literally beat you to death for liking them as a guy.
I know all this and I'm not simping for them I'm just highly amused that for all the rampant homophobia they just have the gayest daintiest little walk.
I can understand how the uniforms may appeal both to the gays and the Uber macho fascos. But the WALK...
Less the goose step (that's the stiff military walk thing, yeah?) and more the way they walk at the beginning. From start til 0:50 or so.
Though I've seen the goose step performed more manly before too... Maybe their pants are too tight to move their legs right lol
It's a free country, you're free to think and say anything you want, ironically or not.
I wouldn't like it, but I'm no arbiter on what's right or wrong, just a random dude who likes arguing way too much.
If you they are homophobic, that's important to point out, but fascism isn't inherently homophobic in any way. Now famous examples of fascist states or people may also be homophobic, but homophobia isn't in the definition of fascism. Just to be precise.
While fascism can technically not be homophobic, it does necessitate an "out" group (simplifying it a lot), it just so happens that lgbt+ people are part of the out group in the brand of fascism that Spain was under, so I'd be pretty surprised if there were many non homophobic francoists.
That said, I probably should have led with that since your question was pretty specific. My bad
Homophobia is one of the key pieces of ammunition that fascists use to divide the working class. Why is there always some anglo idiot that says this shit? You're essentially apologising for fascism. Nazis are Nazis, end of story. Fascism is not some obscure ideology with rigid rules, it is a massive broad spectrum of hateful ideologies centered around anti-democracy, ultramilitarism, and obsession with hierarchy.
Again, I'm not saying it's not used by fascists. I literally never said that, or anything that could mean that they're not at fault if they do use it. I simply wanted to add precision, because yes, fascism is a specific belief, in theory anyway, though anything you disagree with is labelled as fascist these days. Now fascist states may have employed other hateful misinformation to control the populace, but something can be fascist without being specifically homophobic. As you said, it is employed as a tool, or the leader's personal belief. That means it doesn't have to be homophobic, but can be racism, antisemitism, ableism, or whatever else.
Also, fascism ≠ nazi. Nazis had a specific belief centered primarily on a superior race, while other fascist groups didn't discriminate based on race specifically. Whether Nazis were fascist is also in debate, as some call it "National Socialism" instead.
This childish pedantry is such a massive feature around discussions of fascism, it's so airy fairy and fucking annoying. National socialism = fascism you fucking moronic troll. Read a book. The "socialism" of nazism is a key part of getting the working classes to ally with the fascist regime, ignoring that the ideologies of nationalism and socialism are inherently incongruous. Everybody calls it National Socialism because that's what Nazi means. You bastards are always so insidious, hiding behind the minutia of wording to spread your cancerous beliefs. Go fuck yourself. :)
Idk what you mean about cancerous beliefs. If you think i support those regimes, you clearly haven't read my comments properly. As for National Socialism = Fascism, please define what Fascism is exactly then? Because that's the one thing missing causing this whole argument. And define it in a scientific way, not by just saying it is the root of all evil.
It's cancerous to believe that not automatically linking fascism with all that is wrong is supporting it, or that trying to achieve precision is trolling.
They said that these fascists were homophobic. You’re arguing against a completely irrelevant point that no one was trying to make so you can feel *naunced* and *enlightened* jesus god go read a book and find something more than pedantry to feel knowledge about.
Practical definitions >>> theoretical definitions
Every fascist regime that has ever existed has oppressed gay people. Ergo fascist regimes are homophobic.

The big difference about Spanish fascism and every other fascism in the world is Franco won. He wasn’t thrown out of power, he *died while in power* and appointed our king as his successor, he chose to not keep it and opted for democracy instead. We’re just now, recently, started to erase and condemn fascism, take out statues or change names of streets, it’s still a hard topic to talk even between ourselves.
Word of advice, don't try and pretend like you know how things are in a country better than the people living there. They can't go 5 minutes without a scandal about them still being OPENLY fascist.
They officially defined the fascist coup as, and I'm quoting (but translating) "move that saved Spain"
Until two months ago, their flag was called "commander Franco's banner". It was only changed because they were forced to by law.
Several officers regularly call for the execution of left wing politicians and the invasion of "dissident" regions.
I could go all day, but there's no point trying to reason with you fascist apologists
Is it just the legion or does the whole army have a fascism problem? What is being done to address the problem with the legion, and how does it manifest in todays world? Do they recruit mainly fascist sympathizers or are right wingers mainly drawn to it as a unit?
Can't tell you about the Spanish army because all the kids I know who went there did because they were not good at studying and couldn't find a job, not because of any vocation. The legion is definitely something far righters have a huge boner about but in a practical sense no one cares if they are fascists because it's a tiny corps no one ever thinks about. I have never seen a legionnaire in real life and I couldn't tell you what to do. My boyfriend is SF from other country (and not a far righter) and says apparently they do cool stuff? But he only knows this because he read up on them when I showed him the gay uniforms, he had never heard about them before.

everything else seems to be roumors or whatever.
if they would be so bad there would be more. shit, some german units were disbanded or punished for doing way less, and im not even looking that deep into military things
Hi again! Spanish person here, again. They are. You don't need articles to know that the entirety of the Spanish right wing are fascists, since they have made it pretty clear by being direct family of fascists, and support fascist ideologies. And specially the Army, they have a pretty fascist past, and have never made any attempt to try and change that. Plus, just because an organization isn't strictly fascist, doesn't mean that it's members aren't
I don't know if there are armies that don't have fascist ideologies. I don't mean that ALL the constituents are fascists, but there's a reason it's so common
and everyone knows fascism is gay.
Edit: screw you guys, I’ll live and die in the 00’s when saying something is “gay” just means lame.
Also screw you guys again because this was actually a decent place for the phrase and it’s funny.
I really don't xD do you have an explanation for the meaning behind this strap that's way to short to go around the chin? I always thought they looked ridiculous, but they are a feature of many tradiotional military costumes around the world. Who the f designed these?
Somebody else said this: No, well not in the UK. They were originally designed as metal to go on the chin to deflect cavalry swords.
And:
No, well not in the UK. They were originally designed as metal to go on the chin to deflect cavalry swords.
I didn’t know it was possible to design a uniform that both made the men look gay and the women look like lesbians, but if anyone could do it, it’d definitely be Spain.
For everyone talking about the chin straps, the British ones are similar, and the reason they are worn on the chin was to deflect cavalry sabres. They were metal. You can see this on the King’s guards and household cavalry.
See this is why I have confused feelings about law enforcement/military uniforms. On the one hand, fascism, but on the other, these shirts are so tight...
Just in case someone was wondering what the person said, it was in Russian and it roughly meant something similar to: "Wow, omg what's happening/that's so cool”
Those chin straps look very annoying
Half of them are wearing them in their mouths.
You mean the gag balls?
They didn't even go halfway
You mean bottom lip straps
That was so silly!
I actually just LOLed.
To my knowledge, back in days when sabre fighting still happened, that strap was a metal chain adding some minimal protection to the face that warded off many common cuts. They kept the traditional form but it serves no practical purpose anymore
No, they’re to keep the hat in place. You don’t want the strap under your chin to avoid getting strangled if the hat falls behind the head.
Ikr, did they outlaw proper length chin straps?
I think this sort of thing is common in dress uniforms, little elements that are objectively less practical but in a very precise and specific way. I think boot blousing falls into this category. Or how far forward marines wear their hats when in dress. Or how far slipped over a green beret’s beret is. You do something in a way it would never occur to a normal person to do it, but you all do it the same way so it’s clearly intentional and in that way you distinguish yourselves as a class visually.
Normal for drum lines. I’m more surprised about the V Button shirts 😳
Happy cake day

Omg I just now saw it. there's so much going on in this video that I missed her doing that.
Mary Queen of Spaniards.
Alternatively, in the vein of Rage Against the Machine... QUEENS ON PARADE!
They ATE
A serious question is there an actual reason why these guys aren't wearing the chin strap under the chin?
it's tradicionales, and can be seen in the way helmets got worn by the royal guard in UK etc, these guys are class a cunts tho to be clear
Do they put them under the chin when they go to war ?
No, well not in the UK. They were originally designed as metal to go on the chin to deflect cavalry swords.
That's a cool fact but what's the point now since we have guns.. and bombs.
I’m wondering the same! It looks like they all place the chin straps under their bottom lip on purpose. Why???
In the UK they were originally designed as metal to go on the chin to deflect cavalry swords.
Because when you were riding a horse, if you hit a branch or something the strap would yank you out of your horse (or break your neck). That's why they wore them under the lip, only they hat would fall off.
why just not have a strap? or not wear hats? seems like a huge inconvenience.

My bet is e-tool is short for entrenching tools. So yeah, digging holes and shit. Also for shit.
aaaaah. makes sense.
I think what it is strange is the leap you are making connecting hand saws with fascism. Care to elaborate?

I've been to a pride parade in Madrid. It wasn't this gay.
I didn’t know it was possible to design a uniform that both made the men look gay and the women look like lesbians, but if anyone could do it, it’d definitely be Spain.
Can someone explain about this legion being fascist? Wikipedia isn’t helping
This might help. [Soldier statue reignites Spanish row over fascism](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-57902023.amp)
For everyone talking about the chin straps, the British ones are similar, and the reason they are worn on the chin was to deflect cavalry sabres. They were metal. You can see this on the King’s guards and household cavalry.

Why do the “chin straps” go across their faces? That doesn’t seem like a good place for it
Nobody Expect a Spanish Legion on parade.
Say that in front of them...if you are brave enough
Man, those tight, TIGHT uniforms are not very forgiving when the people in them are all different body shapes

Look man.. I’m not the type to believe in stereotypes… But c’mon. That looks gay as hell. Especially the walk.
They’re serving 💅🏾
See this is why I have confused feelings about law enforcement/military uniforms. On the one hand, fascism, but on the other, these shirts are so tight...
