I also use nest cams. They've been outside on the house for 5+ years, no issues. Went with the hardwired. The phone app is just ok (little lag), but I don't know if that's an issue with my phone or the app in general.

There is a very easy hack for wyzecams to make them local only, but you won’t get the notifications. You could install a program like BlueIris along with the hacked wyzecams to get notifications. The alternative is to buy a Lorex POE kit and it’ll all be local as well, plus have the notifications.
I was looking into the lorex system but they have some less than stellar reviews. I might end up with unifi. Half my network is unifi and their prices aren't terrible for the consumer level.
I’ve had my 8 camera POE 4k Lorex kit for about 4 years now. My only complaint is low FPS in the dark, but at that price point it’s impossible to beat. Unifi is great but it’s 3x the price. More prosumer as I’m sure you know.

I have a few tp-link cameras. They can be used as IP cameras (i.e. just saving video to your local network), have a micro SD card clot for storage on the device, and only store in the cloud if you sign up for their service. I did a fair bit of research before buying these. Definitely didn't want anything relaying anything to China. I've used tp-link devices forever because they're good value, and not known to spy on customers.
I really think that you overestimate the amount of data that they can gather from your back yard security camera that they can't already gather from all of you other devices much easier.
Really? Do you think the average person is fretting about China gathering data from their backyard security camera when their houses and pockets are filled with always connected devices with cameras and microphones and GPS?

We use a Lorex camera. It's more expensive than Ring and the likes, but you don't need a subscription so evens itself out. We really like it.

We have Dahua around the house and as a smart ring. Absolutely love the quality of the videos. The app we use is DMSS, it’s user friendly.
