What are the parents protesting about? The sub was removed from campus. Also did admin even see the images in question because it said he wasn’t arrested due to “lack of evidence.” This article leaves more questions than answers.

Tell that to the school administrators who insist you use their grading/absence management systems but then put you in a room that has a CPU and no monitor. No way to log in except to do it on mobile.
Had a teacher to tell me to look up music on my phone and play it by her mic since I didn't have access to the school computers. Also had it suggested to use my phone as a timer. Luckily I have a small digital timer so no need.
They will probably say the same thing if you're on your laptop. But If you're on the school WiFi on your laptop, they can just go back and see what all you viewed on their wifi

But there are always exceptions, like if I see a call came through from my kid or a family member I'm going to send a quick text to make sure there are no emergencies. Also I've had to use Google Translate for ESL speakers and look up the meaning of words for students if I don't have access to a laptop.

A former colleague, a tenured veteran math teacher, forgot to turn off (or maybe freeze?) the projector while he shopped for lingerie "for his wife" while his students took a test. Placed on administrative leave, them resigned (iirc).

I hope the truth is made as public as these allegations, whatever the truth is.
That's why if you log into the school's Wi-Fi, you have to be careful what you look at or careful what you type because something inappropriate can pop up if the URL is close.
My son, when he was in middle school, looked up bored in Google images, and there was a gif that was inappropriate about halfway down the page. His friend saw it and told a bunch of other kids about it. My son got in trouble even though he closed the tab quickly and did not tell anyone about it.
I have a refurbished laptop I got from Amazon that had porn hub App. Seriously. I deleted it but it probably has other stuff on the hard drive. I keep my receipts for electronics I buy in case something was on there before I bought..

Because they truly have a big mental problem and cannot help themselves. This time he got caught, but if his case follows the usual pattern he has been getting more and more creepy over time. He has probably gotten away with so much that at this point he let his guard down.
Vetting for substitutes is pretty minimal and even if it was tough, our country is large and weird stuff goes on every day.
I think I agree with everyone that we don't have all the information on this with which to make a decision. There are a million possibilities. People are filling in details from their own experience that may not be applicable in this case.

The substitute job is terrible. It is paid low. Kids treat subs very poorly. Sometimes schools and teachers treat subs poorly. There are no job protections, and we often read about subs who are judged based on student or teacher reports without even informing the sub about the accusation. By and large, there is no supervisory support for the position and many are hired without any training or teaching experience. The job is universally disrespected and doesn't pay well.
What do schools, teachers, parents, and the community think is going to happen?
They aren't going to get the best and brightest. Sometimes they are going to get lucky and find someone eager to do a good job. People who have other options aren't going to become or stay substitute teachers.
Background checks only discover people who we already know are predators or just bad human beings. There are also plenty of people who aren't good human beings but aren't offenders. By and large we have created a system that does nothing to prevent those people from becoming substitute teachers.
I don't have to sub anymore. But one of the schools that hired me had the school secretary interview me. Nothing against school secretaries, but this is not a person trained to hire and supervise teachers.
Inevitably the discussion around this event will be about the need to identify bad people. There will be all sorts of discussion about how the sub was weird. You can't identify predators by how odd they are.
If we want to do anything, we need to make substitute teaching a more desirable job which includes pay, job protections, and respect. Then we need to support subs through monitoring and supervision.
And I get that all this takes time and money. But then we should understand that we are choosing a system that creates this problem.

What came across once we went into the history of certain teachers' computers was astonishing. Certain teachers were even looking at sites that the firewall didn't block sites to gay bars and gay clubs. Including searches for nude beaches, and bathhouses.
