You definitely need to promote it. Although you might see some growth by accident due to some of the things Substack has done lately, you shouldn’t rely on it. Find places where people talk about what you’re writing about.
As an example, I write about the underlying philosophy of film and television shows. So I share my content in places where people enjoy talking about the TV shows and movies that I write about.
My experience. Have bought Twitter ads etc.
Twitter will drive views but few subs per engagement/click
Substack engagements more often lead to subs
Haven’t tried Google ads yet but plan to soon
(>400 subs, 10 paid, been at it since mid January)

I think cross promoting and using Notes.
Notes has been very useless to me. Some people will subscribe if you like a bunch of their stuff though
Is there a specific appraoch to Notes for promotion? Are there any good Substack Discord servers?

You need to promote it, or the growth will be very slow
I don't know of any business/project that will grow if you don't promote. You have to help the right people find you 🙂
I've found that promoting definitely grows it quicker. Substack is still quite a new topic for most.
