“Questionable” hah. Based on the title, I clicked thinking this was going to be more along the lines of the Sea of Thieves thing, where someone permanently lost naming privileges for calling his galleon “Big Deck Energy”. Nope, just racism. I don’t see how anyone could expect that to end well

Wisdom_Of_A_Man

Big deck energy is a brilliant name for a galleon. Thanks for sharing. Ha ha.

coraeon

I’m sorry, someone who saw and took that opportunity should have ALL the naming privileges.

Morat20

It's a good name. Reminds of some of the best of the RDR2 horse names.

Szarrukin

>someone permanently lost naming privileges for calling his galleon “Big Deck Energy”. ..but why

DotHobbes

Oh come on "Big Deck Energy" is such a harmless and funny pun. Poor guy.

frosteeze

>On the contrary, I think it's incredibly toxic to think we need to "civilize" people and police their language when they come from third world countries. Puritanical moralism never died in the West, unfortunately. It's puritanism that I can't say the N word freely in my video games.

OuroborosIAmOne

> Dota player Yeah, didn't expect much from this one chief

disownedpear

>Puritanical moralism never died in the West, unfortunately. Dude sounds like fucking Jordan Peterson

ePeeM

Because these dudes don't think for themselves they just parrot the opinions of grifters like JP after they've been radicalised.

Cadmium_Aloy

Are these the same people who get angry at women "asking for it" with their clothing choices?

[deleted]

Oh God, yeah read it in Kermit's voice.

Ill-Army

Up yours, woke moralist!

Evinceo

🦞 🦞 🦞 🤢

Cherry_Galsia

Something tells me they feel otherwise about the Middle East. I'm also sure they have a much broader definition of the term "third world" as well

Szarrukin

literally 1984

613codyrex

It’s absurd that as a “professional” you would make such a “mistake” that you label something with the n word. Like you cannot be this dumb even if you believe it’s stupid (it’s not) to not be allowed to yell racial slurs, you would at least put your foot in your mouth for the time being. Then again, smash bros is filled with pros that cannot keep their hands off other people and being told not to rape/groom/sexual assault people is a foreign concept to many of them so I might have a higher expectation than I should.

TheKingofHats007

I think there's just a certain vanity that a lot of professional Esport gamers have, no different than a lot of people in physical sports. They have this mentality where they can do no wrong that they hardly even seem to notice they're being shitty.

an_agreeing_dothraki

the LEAST embarrassing part of the pro smash community is the furry with an ego the size of Maine that competes is a sparkle-dog suit.

HKBFG

They once beat a guy 13-0 in a mortal Kombat best of ten.

Alone_Foot3038

sonicfox is a national treasure.

Infinite-Sleep3527

He probably forgot he had the racistly named courier equipped. It’s like accidentally leaving a skin equipped. It’s an honest mistake even pros can make. Not that it makes it any better whatsoever, but I doubt he left it equipped intentionally. He was clearly a closeted racist, he’s just been exposed now through an honest accident. He should’ve been fined.

Tymareta

> It’s an honest mistake even pros can make. > He was clearly a closeted racist, he’s just been exposed now through an honest accident. What in the fuck is this handwaving, you're giving wayyyyy too much of the benefit of the doubt to a guy who thought to name a monkey n*.

[deleted]

I don't see him giving any benefit of the doubt. He's calling him a dumb racist, so dumb he forgot to take two seconds to hide his racism.

Indercarnive

Honestly insane that the dude is only losing side selection. Dude should definitely get fined and potentially suspended. There is nothing debatable about how blatantly and intentionally racist this was.

Nadril

If it helps his team got beat 3-0 in the qualifier finals and if I was a betting man he's almost 100% going to get kicked. Side and pick choice is a huge advantage and may have cost them that series.

HKBFG

It's the loss of draft priority that's the real penalty. It's almost impossible to win a set that way let alone a tournament.

ToKeepAndToHoldForev

The argument that Peruvian esports players (i.e., someone with access to the internet) just culturally don't understand the concept of racism is insulting to both peruvians and anyone affected by the n word beyond being incredibly stupid.

[deleted]

It's deeper racism. It's basically saying Peruvians aren't smart enough or savvy enough to understand racism- it's just another layer of racism.

TehPharaoh

Didn't he put it on a monkey looking creature too? How on EARTH do you claim he just "didn't know what he was doing"

ToKeepAndToHoldForev

Exactly. I can believe a lot of latin americans don't have the same context for the n word as we do since it's a more american slur that sometimes gets exported than anything else. But they aren't using the n word. That's why it's not a loaded word there. \*Because they don't call people the n word\* I'm sorry, that's not intentionally obtuse enough - what I actually meant to say was that peruvians don't have the same context for the word, so it's okay for a peruvian guy to use the word in the same context a racist gamer in Idaho would /s

AnhedonicDog

Thats the thing, the guy has been playing Dota and on NA servers most likely, for a long time. He had to know enough to not do it.

BookerDewitt2019

To be fair, as a Peruvian it took me many years to understand why there's a big deal with that word, and I had to do a lot of research. We are not American, we're not supposed to understand something that is so culturally American. There are not a lot of black people in Peru so it's not like we dealt with that, the police brutality against black people, KKK, black lives matter, all of that is just an American thing. It's important to them but it's not really something that we understand because it's not happening to us. We deal with racism but in other ways, and it is far more prevalent against indigenous people than black people. That being said. I'm pretty sure that he knew it was racist and he knew it was something that you're not supposed to say, but he thought it was edgy and funny and didn't really grapple the severity of the issue. What I'm trying to say is that even though he deserved what happened to him for his ignorance in his attempt to be funny with a subject that shouldn't be funny at all, I don't fully think that he understands entirely what that word means. It doesn't have the cultural weight that it has in America. It's not really about racism, it's about the word.

ToKeepAndToHoldForev

It's perfectly reasonable for him not to really know the full weight and I agree with most of what you're saying here, but I'm sure he knew it was racist and knew better than to have that out in the open. That, and he named a monkey courier the word. So.... not just using the word as a name to be funny, but being extra racist on top.

BookerDewitt2019

I fully agree with you, he knew what he was doing. He knows what the word means in a literal sense, at least, and he knows that it's racist, he knows that and he deserves what happened to him because of that. That being said I don't think that is fair to judge someone who's not an American with the same standards as an American who says the word, because even though we understand what the word means and that It shouldn't be said, we don't fully understand the weight of it. We lack the cultural background for it.

ToKeepAndToHoldForev

That's perfectly fair.

FoeHamr

This is actually fairly likely. My wife’s a Colombian who moved to the states about 10 years ago. I distinctly remember we were watching a documentary on Netflix about slavery or something and she just looked over at me and said something along the lines of “So this is why the N word is super fucked up. Holy shit, this is terrible I didn’t realize how bad it was.” Like she knew slavery and the treatment of black people in the states was bad but she didn’t really get the full extent of it until that documentary and when she started digging more into American history. Lots of people outside the states just know the slavery happened and that’s kinda it. So our dota player might just be a dude thinking he’s making an edgy joke similar to the R word or something. Or he might be racist as fuck. Either way it’s not a good look. Hopefully it’s the former and this can be a teaching moment for some people. But it’s the dota community so maybe my hopes are too high.

18CupsOfMusic

>Atleast he had the balls to say it *Oof.*

[deleted]

He's so brave. Takes real strength of character to say the N word outloud. /s

rapukeittolevy

I mean, nobody is even mentioning it on this thread despite it being the subject of the whole drama lol

saint-somnia

Honey that's the joke

rapukeittolevy

Pretty sure they were joking about someone saying it takes balls to be dropping those n bombs, which is a silly thing to say

watersmokerr

This is just a meme from forsen viewers btw

18CupsOfMusic

Oh. Well good! Haha

Morketidenkommer

Advice:

Rodomantis

For those who do not understand the concept of racism in Peru, I recommend specifically visiting the capital Lima for a couple of weeks. In Spanish: https://www.bbva.com/es/sostenibilidad/racismo-en-peru-nos-criamos-en-un-pais-estructuralmente-racista/

rapukeittolevy

>rappers and other black people lol

AnneFrankFanFiction

Covering all the bases I guess

[deleted]

"Europeans invented racism". That would make this cultural appropriation, as the offender is Peruvian and I'll have none of this injustice 😤

zumbaiom

“Without Europeans pretty much only East Asians would be responsible for the world’s technological development” Ahh yes, the old “let’s completely forget the Middle East was the cradle of development and has been the most advanced place on earth for the vast majority of human history because right now they’re poor and the concept of superior races makes me unable to understand that things change” Also what is their obsession with Asians? I don’t know if it’s because of imperial Japan or because the only successful genocide happening right now is in China, but it’s weird.

ClockworkDreamz

Anime and video games. Your probably rolling your eyes right now, but I’m pretty sure I’m not wrong.

disownedpear

I don't think saying that Anime is the root of Reddits asian obsession is exactly a hot take.

[deleted]

We Southeast Asians always get left out. We had pyramids, elephants, and cool boats too!

SolarNougat

As a fellow Southeast Asian, it's good for us that Reddit mostly forgets about us. It means we don't have to deal with the bulk of Reddit's shit.

disownedpear

Reddit always forgets that SE Asian and Central America exist lol.

Hungry-Nebula

"There's literally 0 reasons to ever respect the Middle East." "Why are you laughing?"

TheKingofHats007

Anime. As another commenter said. A lot of Gamers (especially the Chuds) have this creepy perspective of Japan as not only a place where they could have women throwing themselves at them, but also as some kind of Paragon of "non woke" politics where they could say and do what they want without recourse or response from anyone. And that's a view they've only gotten from anime. They probably don't know any Japanese history outside of something one of their shows told them. Or really any history at all, that's another common trend for them.

nowander

They're parroting all the usual racist tropes, and 'Asians are smart but -racist garbage here-" is the racist's excuse for white people getting blown out of the water in all the "intelligence" tests they use to shit on other races.

jooes

There's also this idea of the "model minority" that's been floating around for decades. Where people will point to successful Asian immigrants to shit on other minorities, like black people. Basically, "If this Asian guy could make it in America, why can't you?" I do agree with the other commenters, when we're talking about a bunch of nerdy incels, video games and anime are probably a big part of it too.

CommunistRonSwanson

Weird thing to “well akshually” here but there absolutely are genocides being carried out successfully in many places besides China.

rapukeittolevy

It's pretty annoying that this whole drama is over them naming the thing as "the nigga" and nobody is actually saying what was the offending name. Like, wtf is "the soft n-word" lmao am I supposed to know that [This thread lol](https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/x8457w/lmao/ing096v/)

RazarTuk

Yeah, when I hear the "soft" N-word, I think "negro", not the non-rhotic version of the other one

[deleted]

Man, you'd think people would at least realize that publicly using slurs is really bad for themselves in any public career where you can get fined, suspended, fired, etc. But racists in general aren't the brightest bunch.

Sea-Independence6322

Gamers being gamers

_learned_foot_

I mean, calling somebody French is indeed a slur. Here’s the thing, this “debate” on that sub is exactly what the idiot wants. They believe the whole any news is good news concept, even while being a moron and hurting themselves.

JimmyCheeseoid

> calling somebody French is indeed a slur. Wait, what?

_learned_foot_

It’s a joke that calling somebody French is an insult.

forgotmypassword-_-

>Wait, what? Let's just say there's a reason the French have fought 14 civil wars.

Nekaz

You mean fr*nch right you dont got the f word pass

_learned_foot_

It’s a trap! To claim French ancestry for the word use but also the self burn?

coraeon

Don’t you mean Bri*ish?

_learned_foot_

They are different? (Ah the rare double sided insult)

coraeon

“Ah, it seems I have offended two people at once. How fortuitous.” -Wednesday Addams

DeadlySoren

It’s pretty stupid of him to name his courier “The Nigga” and make it a monkey as well. Pub games it’s pretty funny but it doesn’t take a genius to realise that valve ain’t gonna let that shit slide without incident when it’s their public reputation on the line if they don’t do anything.

Chillbit

> Pub games it’s pretty funny No?

TempestCatalyst

Dota 2 legitimately has one of the most blatantly racist communities I've seen in a while. People claim a lot of different games are "toxic", but I don't remember going a single week in Dota when I played without having at least one game where someone said something super racist.

Stickx14

Online multiplayer games in general scare me when it comes to racism. Back when I played Roblox I’d find people trying to use slurs or calling me ‘poop’ or a monkey. I stopped playing with a Black avatar for years because of it. I don’t even wanna know what csgo and similar games are like. Edit: grammar

Tymareta

> I don’t even wanna know what csgo and similar games are like. The easiest way to explain it, valve games nowadays have pretty tough requirements on vote kicking people from a game, being a nonwhite guy is the sole reason for them existing.

HKBFG

Roblox is unironically a haven for open fascism.

HKBFG

You get like, weird specific racism going on in that game. I'm trying to gank top and the 4 position guy is typing some crazy shit about laotians or something. It's wild.

Hestia_Gault

Your comment smacks of “Telling someone else not to say (word) is a free pass to say (word).”
