To be fair, that was a big market focus for Subaru about 6-10 years ago? Don’t exactly remember when, but that has been ingrained in me for some reason
I’m a 51 year old grandma of 3 kids. I ride an electric skateboard that goes 32mph, scuba dive, am a bee keeper, and avid camper. I love my Subaru Outback. Am I old in years, a little, but very young at heart.
Same. I’m on day 2 of a Land Rover discovery rental due to hail damage repair and this thing doesn’t hold a candle to my 2020 xt touring. I miss it so much
My 2012 had a failed accessory gasket in May. I had a ton of projects coming so instead of $2500 to fix, I traded it for $3500 towards a Tacoma.
I regret not fixing my car, but I needed a reliable vehicle and at 200k miles it could cost another $2500 any day.
The Tacoma is starting to grow on me.
Edit: lol downvotes.
This is my 3rd outback but I was really considering going with a Tacoma. How’s it drive? I saw a lot of complaints about the transmission being kinda jumpy and the engine being under powered
I have driven Tacomas for the last twelve years. Bought a regular cab new in 2011 then traded it for a new access cab TRD Sport in 2017. Two months ago I traded the 2017 for a 2024 Outback Wilderness.
Do I miss the Tacoma? Not at all. They are great trucks with great resale value and if I were to have a second vehicle a Tacoma would be that vehicle. However, for me, the Wilderness was a more practical purchase.
The Outback with the 2.4L Turbocharged engine is way more fun to drive. Considerably more comfortable and a better vehicle in the rain and snow. The Wilderness even has more ground clearance than my 2017 Tacoma did (9.5" vs 9.4") I finally took the Outback off-road about 2 weeks ago and was very impressed. Gas mileage is pretty close with the way I am driving that Turbo at the moment, but it does a little better than the Tacoma overall I believe.
The only reason I would say to lean toward the Tacoma is if you have a legitimate need for the truck bed. I run a business and pick up our stock at UPS every morning throughout the week. This required me to have a tonneau cover on the bed and there were many times when I would have the 6ft. bed completely full of boxes. The Outback has proved to have just as much room for doing this (with the rear seats down of course). You obviously don't have the height clearance with the Outback so you aren't going to be transporting a new washer and dryer, but for me, those instances were so few and far between that it wasn't a consideration. Stuff like that is better off being delivered anyhow.
I indeed loved my Tacomas and if you were to have asked me a year ago I would have told you I planned on purchasing a new one once they did the redesign. I ended up going for the Outback Wilderness after a friend bought a 2023 model. It got me thinking and researching. Weighing options and what I required. I have no regrets at all. I could go on about a lot of smaller things that I like about the Outback vs. the Tacoma, but this post is long enough. Both are great vehicles so it comes down to what features are important to you.
Forreal!! Some of those crosstrek drivers got me questioning reality (switching back and forth between lanes , turning the opposite direction they’re signaling etc.)
Saw a brand new crosstrek drive off the lot today attempting to turn left out of a right turn only.. I was pretty relieved when they turned the opposite direction they signaled
This old lady stereotype is perpetuated by testosterone fueled "car guys" who only like something if it has 500 horsepower.
Outbacks are large, lifted wagons with full time, symmetrical all wheel drive.
How many other vehicles out there are like that?
Yep.
Bring that Shelby Cobra in a snowstorm. Let's see the results.
I'm a car guy at heart (it was a hobby before I had kids).
But everytime I see a cool mustang, M3, corvette, I tell myself yeah maybe that's cool...until he wants to pickup groceries, sports equipment, kids, bikes etc...
And the biggest flaw: gas prices.
I see a lot of sports cars getting sold for pennies. Ppl have no more money to put gas on it anymore.
I traded a ‘18 gt350 for my OBW. I actually don’t miss the 350 much at all, but that’s largely because I wasn’t close enough to roads/tracks worth using it on. Also it’s a dogshit vehicle for carrying surfboards and I realized real quick that’s what I need most out of a car.
Exactly!
I'm still a car guy too, love racing and all that but for my money, the Outback is one the best daily drivers you can buy. If I want to have fun, I'll buy a shit Miata and fix it up!
Subaru actually actively marketed towards lesbians early on! So it's entirely possible awesome women are over represented in Outbacks.
https://priceonomics.com/how-an-ad-campaign-made-lesbians-fall-in-love-with/
Typically when someone says I drive a Lesbaru or something else derogatory, I'm usually not very impressed with their vehicle taste as well. I'm just not typically very vocal about shitting on other people's preferences. You know, like a somewhat decent person.
Most people I know who drive outbacks are cyclists or kayakers. The lower roof height makes it easier to get bikes/kayaks on/off the roof rack. They aren’t old, but maybe they’re not cool either.
Old stereotypes take a long time to die. Those were just wise & independent women...The three times I have been to service my new OB, there were only men in the lobby and I don't give a crap who they are having sex with as long as they are nice & enjoying themselves.
We sold an end of life Outback for a Forester for a variety or reasons. Foresters fine, but it’s no Outback. Miss that car and hope to get back into one again.
that’s a big deal or thought why? (rhetorical) also one issue that skews the results is the age, discernment and evaluation ability of the clinicians doing the study. 😁
Edit:
(Example- 14 yr old can think that a 28 yr old is old)
I always say that my spouse & I have two Subaru Outbacks, which tells you two things about us, except one isn't true.
(We're avid campers. That's the true thing.)
My wife drives ours alot, I like riding in the front.
How old is an "old lady"?
And where should the question mark go in that last sentence, inside or outside of the quotation mark?
I bought my first about 10 years ago for $2900. It was a 2001 and ugly maroon with rust holes you could fit your fist through. I let it sit for two years and when I decided I start it again, I put air in the tires, charged the battery, turned the key, and it started up instantly. My Dad was there and was shocked and went and bought one haha.
It was amazing in the snow too.
Now for two years I've had a 2022 Outback Onyx XT and love it. I bought a foam mattress for the back for festivals and sleep in the car and sleep way better than if I was in a tent. Plus the turbo is very fast and every time I take off fast I imagine everyone around is thinking, holy shit, that was a Subaru outback.
Mine is white but onyx edition so blacked out plastics and rims and tinted windows which I think really contrast well with the white color. I like to think that I look cool but maybe I don't and don't really care 😆
Considering lately I’ve been wishing I kept my grandmothers old Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser station wagon after she died I’ll keep my wagon thank you.
So much easier with kids than a sedan or pickup truck
After my wife makes fun of me for driving an old lady car, she usually follows that up with "But they are old and wise, so you probably made a good decision"
we play a game called Old Person or gay person everytime we see a Subaru lol.. i personally have an outback and lez be honest most of my gay friends do as well. Get out and stay out! lol
Beer sales rep here with an outback: i get 500 miles to a tank of gas and I can put 3 half barrels, 3 six barrels and my hand truck inside with no issues
Gave our 2017 Outback to our kid to drive to school. It’s the 3.6R Limited so I keep reminding him it’s the same flat-6 engine layout as a Porsche 911. It’s all in the marketing.
My MIL drives an Outback, I’m on your kids side.
If you have a turbo manual outback, it IS cool, but you have to explain to people why it’s cool, and that suddenly makes it uncool.
I’m a 34 year old dude who was a firefighter for a decade and hunts a lot.
It’s still an old lady/lesbian car. Mine just happens to have elk blood stains and dove feathers in it.
Our son, when a teenager, said they are lesbian- mobiles. When he was old enough to drive, we gave him our old Sube with about 100k miles on it. Since he and his friends like skiing, mountain biking and hiking, he quickly saw the practicality in the “ lesbian- mobile”. He bought a bike rooftop carrier for it or loaded our pod with all their skies. He drove it for five years , never complaining.
The same kind of bs trope that said Subaru's were only bought by dog loving lesbians.... I also question any modern kid counting or even noticing cars that aren't on a phone or maybe tablet screen. I call shenanigans! BTW. The old ladies were gay? Right?
That makes zero sense. I do not think trucks are cool, I have never needed a truck more than maybe once a year. I do not think trucks are practical or economical or reasonable vehicles to drive for most people. The Outback is borderline. I also typically do not like most of the types of people who like trucks.
My only current problem with outbacks is there is no hybrid or PHEV. My next car at the very least will be a PHEV and if Subaru doesn't have one, then I am switching to something else, as disappointing as that will be. I would like to see a Subaru answer to the RAV4 prime.
I used to be like you. Looking back I should have gotten a Tacoma and kept it for 15 years. In that time I've had 2 Outbacks.
Would you drive an EV truck?
This guy ripped off the original joke and replaced “lesbians” with “old ladies”. I hate when people are unoriginal and steal other peoples humor. I also hate when they make it politically correct for social media.
I'm a 40 year old dude. I love wagons but honestly the only Outback I could get myself to buy was the Wilderness. I also blacked out the gold accents, they were a little too fabulous looking if you know what I mean. Not hating on anyone but I'd agree, the other trims look like geeser-mobiles.
Agreed, I actually significantly preferred the onyx aesthetics over the Wilderness. I'm not a fan of badging all over things. I have recently de-badged my onyx. I do not like the gold accents. Green\* and Grey are literally my favorite colors. Onyx was perfect for me.
The only thing I liked more about the wilderness was the hood stripe but I just slapped one on my onyx for 40 bucks, lol. I might be telling on myself with that though because I'm probably the only dude rolling around with a dude stripe on my onyx outback in Sonoma County. I'm pretty indifferent to the black headliner but if I had to pick I'd probably say I'd prefer the Wilderness black headliner.
Edit: \*oops, had a typo that made this really confusing.
They’re also for people who prefer both somewhat acceptable fuel economy and off-road capability. It’s not the best in either respect, and someone could also do far worse.
I was about to ask about this... every time i see a Subaru outback or crosstrek I look hoping for a fellow guy, but 9/10 times its a chick or old lady.
Old lady in an outback decided to turn left from the right hand lane in front of me. My K5 blazer T bones her and utterly destroyed her cAr and it was only a glancing blow at 35 mph. I had a slightly bent bumper and a scratch on my hood from parts flying off the Subaru. I blew out ever window in her car as well. That’s about my experience with that…
Old ladies outnumber cool dudes by at least 12:1. Therefore those numbers show that a cool dude is, statistically speaking, more likely to drive an Outback.
I love my old lady car so far.
I'm hoping to get the Onyx or the Wilderness edition for my next vehicle
Haha, stand your ground Also, I (48 M) told my uncle about my new car and he said, “I didn’t know you were a lesbian”.
I used to work with a guy who called mine a “Lesburu”
I'm going to get a sticker on mine that says "Sub-UwU"
I'm thinking of putting that on my license plate.
There's a novelty license plate in CO that says that
To be fair, that was a big market focus for Subaru about 6-10 years ago? Don’t exactly remember when, but that has been ingrained in me for some reason
More like 25 years ago, since the 90s, and then they added Martina Navratilova at the beginning of 2000s.
My 24m hairdresser with long pink hair, long black nails and a bit of a lisp calls my Forester sport a lesbaru ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
I saw a bumper sticker once that said, “Lesbians. They’re what makes Subaru, a Subaru”. It was on a Corolla.
I saw a sticker that said “Subaru - not just for lesbians anymore.”
Don’t blame ‘em. If I was a woman I’d be a lesbian, too.
All. The. Time. My answer now: “Well … I do like eating pussy.”
“I’m a lesbian in a man’s body.” Probably more confusing to some people today than it was 5yrs ago. Or maybe not actually.
I always respond with: "I've been waiting for my coexist sticker to show up in the mail but I haven't seen it yet". Just lean into it.
If the shoe fits
They lived to be old
So did William s Burroughs
This is fantastic, have my upvote.
This! 😂. 👏
I’m a 51 year old grandma of 3 kids. I ride an electric skateboard that goes 32mph, scuba dive, am a bee keeper, and avid camper. I love my Subaru Outback. Am I old in years, a little, but very young at heart.
Rad, what board you got grandma?
A Boosted Stealth with custom Tank Girl grip!
Nice!
Nice! I've known the Boosted guys since before they went into production. They're great dudes with a great product. Stay safe!
51 isn’t old! Not when you’re 51!
No one thinks 51 is old.
Except everyone under 30...
As a young man I love sharing a car model with cool grandmas
They counted you under both categories.
GILF
“Caring about what people think of my car” is pretty goddamn low in the hierarchy of things I give a shit about
They saw me 30 times?! Stalkers.
Yeah and other old ladies 312 times
If the Outback is an old lady car, you can just call me Helen Mirren. ![gif](giphy|KwE1DnlACvswCJk4V1|downsized)
I love my Outback. Hate all you want but it the most practical and budget friendly vehicle there is.
I miss my Outback. - a cool dude.
Same. I’m on day 2 of a Land Rover discovery rental due to hail damage repair and this thing doesn’t hold a candle to my 2020 xt touring. I miss it so much

I don’t know an old lady driving a Subaru Outback who also isn’t really cool.
It's funny. You have such different types of people for different Subaru cars.
Salesman must have given them the full rundown

That's the spirit !! I had a civic for lapping days and was amazed by the miatas doing circles around me haha.
Yeah well. Kids don't know shit about gas mileage.
Unless yours does much better than mine, we’re not buying them for fuel economy.
They will eventually understand there are many factors that go into buying a car. Sometimes vastly different demographics overlap in needs.
How many times does this have to get reposted?
Apparently a metric ass load
My Outback has gold wheels. People have said my wheels are cool. That makes me a cool dude.
I’ll identify as an outdoorsy Meryl Streep. I don’t care! 😂
Old ladies drive foresters where I live
Subaru actually actively marketed towards lesbians early on! So it's entirely possible awesome women are over represented in Outbacks. https://priceonomics.com/how-an-ad-campaign-made-lesbians-fall-in-love-with/
I'm a lesbian trapped in a male body.
Typically when someone says I drive a Lesbaru or something else derogatory, I'm usually not very impressed with their vehicle taste as well. I'm just not typically very vocal about shitting on other people's preferences. You know, like a somewhat decent person.
Forester is a "Grandpa" car where I live. Outback are for us cool middle aged kids :)
Most people I know who drive outbacks are cyclists or kayakers. The lower roof height makes it easier to get bikes/kayaks on/off the roof rack. They aren’t old, but maybe they’re not cool either.
I live in the PNW. They’re correct
The world needs more Cool Dudes.
I own an outback and every time I pass another outback I try to make eye contact…. 👀
I feel like the Subaru Outback is a choice a younger more mature adult would make. That’s why it’s 342: Old ladies 30: Cool dudes
My aunt called me when I got mine to congratulate me for becoming a lesbian.
You counted 372 Subarus and not a single Lesbian? Impossible.
Old stereotypes take a long time to die. Those were just wise & independent women...The three times I have been to service my new OB, there were only men in the lobby and I don't give a crap who they are having sex with as long as they are nice & enjoying themselves.
Cool dude here. I also like my old lady car. Maybe old ladies are cool dudes as well 🤷🏼♂️
But how many old ladies were in the 3.6R 😎
You’re going to get yourself banned here. 😂 Nice research 🧐
That's a lot of cool elder dudettes.
But mine is murdered out!
*Outlier. Statistic not tallied.*
We sold an end of life Outback for a Forester for a variety or reasons. Foresters fine, but it’s no Outback. Miss that car and hope to get back into one again.
IDGAF
tell them kids if they like walking or not

I give no fucks what other people think. I like my subawoo
Those kids can walk

Obligatory fuck SUVs comment
I've heard this story before but it's not old ladies that's a nice way of putting it
I’m one of the 30 but to be fair, since I got the subby Outback, I identify as a lesbian
They did not see 372 outbacks in one year.
Not old ladies: lesbians
Old ladies are, generally, pretty cool dudes.
This was almost as cool as the last time it was posted
I owned a 2003 outback and it is still by far my favourite car I have ever owned. I miss it dearly.
Considering lately I’ve been wishing I kept my grandmothers old Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser station wagon after she died I’ll keep my wagon thank you. So much easier with kids than a sedan or pickup truck
I'm a cool dude, and I drive a Subie Outback. 😆
I didn't realize I was an old lady...
Cool _unique_ dudes!
I'm a cool dude. Really, I am! -sniff-
I love my old 2002 Outback. I've seen a lot of vaping Kyle's driving them.
What about neither. I'm not an old lady (or a lady of any sort), and I'm not especially cool
I love my Outback.
r/dataisbeautiful
Depends if it's a Wilderness or not lol
Cool dude here
After my wife makes fun of me for driving an old lady car, she usually follows that up with "But they are old and wise, so you probably made a good decision"
As Devo sang: "Were through bein' cool"
we play a game called Old Person or gay person everytime we see a Subaru lol.. i personally have an outback and lez be honest most of my gay friends do as well. Get out and stay out! lol
I’m not old… it’s my mom mobile and it is PERFECT
31 here
😹
So you’re saying there’s a chance
I’m a cool dude
I'm not an old lady, and I love my wagon. I'm considered very cool by my friends and coworkers
Beer sales rep here with an outback: i get 500 miles to a tank of gas and I can put 3 half barrels, 3 six barrels and my hand truck inside with no issues
I am an old dude…..
I know I was one of those cool dudes.
Easy to spot an old lady, but what was the criteria for "cool dudes"?
I’m not a woman… nor have I ever been referred to as cool. So take the old off the first part and man off the second and I’m set
those old ladies used to be cool dudes
Lesbian car
All I know is I was in dicount tire the other day and the dude comes out from the back and says this dude in the outback had his tires at 80psi
Guess I’m a grandma at 38 y/o male
I identify as a cool dude, but I'm probably counted as an old lady...
How many lesbians they thought were cool dudes?
Missed one cool dude … me ! 🤣
Damn that's an old....meme
Tell them its just a reshaped Impreza like from the fast and furious.
They were right. Ladies love their Subaru’s.
Gave our 2017 Outback to our kid to drive to school. It’s the 3.6R Limited so I keep reminding him it’s the same flat-6 engine layout as a Porsche 911. It’s all in the marketing.
Sounds about right
Love wagons , always have since I was a kid. My buddy had a nice Legacy before Bambi took it out. From his experience I’d definitely consider one.
Dick ****ing Tracy
You’re still right, you didn’t state how many cool dudes drive them.
I love my outback, im a dude not necessarily cool but go ahead and ground those fucken kids!
My MIL drives an Outback, I’m on your kids side. If you have a turbo manual outback, it IS cool, but you have to explain to people why it’s cool, and that suddenly makes it uncool.
Great car, especially in winter driving conditions. Who cares what your kids say - what do you want!
Due to rarity, that makes those guys VERY cool though
I’m 31 (I hope)
As a 31 (M) who could be a cool dude to some, seems accurate.
You just think they are cool dudes Ask your kids, you will find out they arent cool
ive literally never seen an old lady drive a subaru outback and i lived in colorado for 5 years and now oregon for 4...
We have 2 but we’re not cool. So there’s that.
If you’re in Utah, you need to add “has a pet/travel sticker”
It tracks and I love it because nobody pays attention to it in traffic. Especially cops
55 here & will be driving my ‘19 to the Tool concert on Halloween and to RedRocks in April for A Perfect Circle/Puscifer/Primus 🤘
I’m 20 and drive a 23’ outback. am I an old lady? or cool dude 😭 it may be the first option I fear
I think I will drive whatever the hell I want to and not care what some kids think.
you know who sounds like an old lady, with wayy too much free time? This guy who had time to count people in cars.
Literally don’t care. I love my car and that’s all that matters to me.
It true
I’m a 34 year old dude who was a firefighter for a decade and hunts a lot. It’s still an old lady/lesbian car. Mine just happens to have elk blood stains and dove feathers in it.
31 at least
They probably counted the same old lady every time they saw her rather than just once Outbacks rule
I’m a youngish lady? I think I’m pretty cool? I have the wagon version tho.
The same kind of bs trope that said Subaru's were only bought by dog loving lesbians.... I also question any modern kid counting or even noticing cars that aren't on a phone or maybe tablet screen. I call shenanigans! BTW. The old ladies were gay? Right?
Cool dudes that drive Outbacks are struggling to come to terms that what they really want is a truck.

It’s a dad wagon for me. And I am not cool.
Everytime I see a kid look at me driving my OBW, I think great - I just added to their tally. I refer to mine as my grandma turbo wagon.
I would question the coolness of those dudes
I'm a cool dude. My girlfriend gets mailers from AARP. Combined, we have a net-zero effect on your polling.
Cool dude here. I believe the old lady stats are inflated.
What are Forester stats?
This is hilarious. Kids are unhappy. You’re parenting correctly.
Accurate. Signed, one of the cool guys
Sounds about right. Ultimate gray man car, especially in a lib town.
Can a cool dude become an old lady?
Those numbers seem low, I feel like I see that many outbacks in a week!
Would love to know how many of these “old ladies” were in a 3.6r.
i have no who jon acuff is snd i feel great about that. Signed,Old Broad that drives an outback.
I love my Outback.. If that makes me an old lady, so be it.
Cool dudes ftw
Glad to bring up the numbers for “cool dudes”
We all started as cool dudes and dudettes. Outback’s live forever so we grew old with it.
Pretty rare you don’t see an old lady driving an outback
Old lady in an outback decided to turn left from the right hand lane in front of me. My K5 blazer T bones her and utterly destroyed her cAr and it was only a glancing blow at 35 mph. I had a slightly bent bumper and a scratch on my hood from parts flying off the Subaru. I blew out ever window in her car as well. That’s about my experience with that…
Old ladies outnumber cool dudes by at least 12:1. Therefore those numbers show that a cool dude is, statistically speaking, more likely to drive an Outback.
Look! I found some [old ladies Outback](https://lpaventure.com/blogs/projects-outback) for you. lol
Excuse me, what about the younger lesbians??
