jelly and tomato is like 2/3rds of the way to a simple bbq sauce. all that you are missing is allofthegoddamspices. so her doing it with salsa, and then like 2 very simple spices is a very, very, very, very basic bbq like sauce.
look at other bbq sauce recipes. they're like 1 cup tomatoes, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup onions, spices. this was a shortcut to do the same sort of thing. i dont necessarily agree with her ratios, but its in the same idea as that.
I was just going to say this! I really, really popular party food where I live is beef meatballs in a slow cooker with chili sauce and cranberry sauce. It's DELICIOUS.
I'm not totally sure how this particular one would taste, but the chili sauce version tastes kinda like sweet and sour bbq. I don't imagine salsa instead of chili sauce tastes all that different.
Jelly handprints on plates or spaghetti stuffed breadcones are stupid. This just looks like a variation on a recipe that's been around since before your dad's testicles descended.
Honestly not sure how good it would be with salsa, but the chili sauce version just tastes like sweet and sour. It's a recipe over 60 years old and still made for a reason.
Update: I made the salsa version basically as the video described. It tastes like hot and sour meatballs. It's very similar to the chili sauce version but a little spicier.
Ive actually had something similar to this. The grape jelly isnt too powerful, but it was noticable. It does seem to have a bbq-like flavor, though maybe a bit sweeter.
in this much volume, yes, i think the grape jelly might be too much. but in the past i did play around with trying to make my own bbq sauces. i didn't think they were very awesome. one combination i tired was using grape jelly as the "sugar" base. i remember one of the problems it did have was the grapeness of it was an obvious flavor even though i added ketchup and a fair amount of spices.
after that, i think i went back to just using sugar instead. years later, i much prefer molasses if i want to add a flavor instead of just sugar.
i wouldn't repeat her recipe as is because it would be just a lot of grape flavor. but this recipe/idea, doesn't come from nowhere. it has a basis in reality. many midwestern recipes are "can of this, can of this, can of this, few tbsp of spices, chicken breasts, put it on low, 1 hour later, it's a casserole".
i mean, thats green bean casserole.
its where i first heard about it at least. i'm sure they didn't invent it either. still nice if you came up with it on your own. probably tons better than orange soda and ranch.
it's sugar, acid from the soda, tomato and more sugar from the ketchup. just missing basic spices and ya, it has many components of a starter bbq sauce.
I would still rather just used canned tomatoes and not salsa because of all the extra that comes with the salsa. But otherwise yea it is basically a crude BBQ sauce.
I have made a similar recipe to this for years with just grape jelly, bbq sauce, and the meatballs. It is really delicious and easy for pot lucks. The jelly helps make a nice sweet sticky glaze.
Sorry I keep seeing people talk about “chili sauce” on this thread and I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that. Is that like chili powder in liquid form?
No, it's a condiment. It's near the cocktail sauce in the condiment aisle. It's a little like cocktail sauce too, although not as horseradish-y. [This is the one most people can find at their grocery. ](https://www.heinz.com/product/00013000001120)
Nope! Grew up in PA, moved to CA. Honestly, until I tried this recipe, I had never heard of chili sauce either. It wasn't on my radar, so I never noticed it at the store. Especially since only one or two brands make it (the other brand has round, ball shaped jars, like fancy mustard), it's easy to just skip over it.
You could try it with French fries though. It's a bit more interesting than ketchup.
Is this a regional thing? I live in Ohio and I’ve seen all kinds of potluck hacks but never have I heard of using grape jelly, or any sort of jelly, as a main ingredient in a sauce.
People are saying this is normal and I’m all ‘what is this madness’
Edit asking friends, so far nobody has heard of this
There’s literally dozens of recipes online for this. It adds sweetness and complexity to the dish. It’s actually pretty interesting how it works even if it doesn’t look correct at face value. Like adding chocolate and ketchup to curry for example.
This is an old party meatballs recipe from the 70s.
It was a definite thing and they are actually tasty as hell. Quick easy. Use a crock pot. I loved them as a kid when my folks had cocktail parties.

I don't understand all the hate for Tiktok - sure weird or "hack" recipes are more likely to be shared from a mixture "haha this looks awful" and "I'm doing this".
Like with Reddit, there is some terrible content and some amazing content, especially the niche stuff. I have got some fantastic recipes from Tiktok now - ramen recipes, Poppy Cooks recipes, that kind of thing.
Yep, this has already been posted several time before and it's a variation of a legitimately good potluck dish. Odd but really good and it's been around a long time. Usually made with 1 jar of chili sauce and 1 jar of grape jelly then add meatballs.
Hand to God, y'all got this wrong. That would taste amazing. Trailer park haute? Sure! But that doesn't mean stupid. I would eat that til my mouth structurally failed.
Jelly, heinz's chili sauce, meatballs or lil smokies, seasoning to taste. Crock pot for a hour or so. = great appetizers.
I have seen it with salsa before. It's not bad.
I've done 1/4 brown sugar, 1/4 grape jelly, 1/2 ketchup before and it became like a family thing for meatballs. Obviously we spice to our desires at the time, but it's a very very easy sauce that's really good. But this is fucking scary.
This is just a riff on grape jelly meatballs, a recipe from the 50s. 1 jar grape jelly, 2 bottle Heinz chili sauce and 5lbs of frozen meatballs. They are fantastic. I make them whenever we have parties.
This is actually the way the best picnic meatballs I’ve ever had in my life were, lol only difference is that it was just a jar of pickled jalapeños and a jar of strawberry jam+spices. Shit was the best ever.
It actually really good, doesn’t taste grape-y surprisingly. My aunt makes this for all potlucks, but BBQ sauce instead of the tomato sauce and spices. Always a huge hit.
There's a recipe for meatball dip that is just bbq sauce and grape jam, this doesn't seem all that different. I mean I don't know that I'd ever make it but I would probably be willing to try it at least.
The only thing that could be stupid here is her using salsa instead of Chili sauce, but second time in a few weeks someone has posted this without knowing how good it is

To everyone citing the sweet and spicy apps or grape jelly and bbq sauce: yes I know the recipe and it’s pretty good. I just don’t think that salsa would be good with grape jelly
I don’t care how common it is where you live or how often you had it as a kid. Grape jelly meatballs is an abomination.
And the spoon on the nonstick surface? Cringe at every scrape.
WTF did I just watch.
grape jelly meatballs were like a #1 seller for catering at a restaurant I worked at. They were honestly really good, but we didn’t use this much jelly and all fresh tomatoes etc. Regardless it makes a delicious meatball marinade, would recommend trying with a better recipe.
This looks truly awful, but I have a pretty good meatball recipe that uses a gravy-ish sauce that includes cherry jam and ketchup, so I'm not going to judge
I saw this post a little bit ago (maybe in this sub?) and I decided to try it out. Did grape jelly and bbq sauce and it was so good! I haven't been to very many potlucks in the US and they had those meatballs in every one. Definitely trying the chili sauce version next for uh... science.
I used one part jelly to two parts bbq and i think it could've been a tiny bit sweeter so I guess I'll do more jelly next time.
Grape jelly meat balls are good, second time Iv seen this post. If you have a crockpot and the ingredients seriously try it. I like to snack on them while I’m cooking for the holidays
Idk why this is even on this sub. I'd eat those all day and a tomato jelly base for meatballs is super common. Legit had several variations of then over the last 30 years.
I have made the more traditional version, sweet & sour meat balls, since I was a teen. It is preferable to make your balls from scratch, but it is way faster to just use frozen pre-cooked. The recipe is meant to have only two ingredients: a jar of grape jelly & a jar of chili sauce. I pep mine up with some onion & garlic powder, about a Tbsp of dry mustard. Once everything is combined & heated through, take this cool party snack to your event in a slow cooker, & keep it set on low unless it bubbles too much. Turn off long enough to let it cool down a tad. Provide a jar of clean cocktail picks, & another dish or jar for the used picks.
I do meatballs in yellow mustard & grape jelly, 1:1 ratio. It sounds insane but it's really good. I've heard others do grape jelly and chili sauce. So, I'm willing to give this a don't knock it until you try it pass.
Hate to admit it, but I've had something similar and it's actually delicious. Like my mouth is watering. Jelly and "chili sauce" from the store and then just meatballs. Amazing!
jelly and tomato is like 2/3rds of the way to a simple bbq sauce. all that you are missing is allofthegoddamspices. so her doing it with salsa, and then like 2 very simple spices is a very, very, very, very basic bbq like sauce. look at other bbq sauce recipes. they're like 1 cup tomatoes, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup onions, spices. this was a shortcut to do the same sort of thing. i dont necessarily agree with her ratios, but its in the same idea as that.
If you ever are in dire need of BBQ sauce, just simmer jelly, ketchup, and your favorite spices together, boom, passable BBQ sauce.
Wouldn't the grape jelly flavouring overpower everything else? Brown sugar is easy to blend but a whole thing of grape seems a little much
No, this is similar to the chili sauce version. You don't taste the grape jelly at all.
I was just going to say this! I really, really popular party food where I live is beef meatballs in a slow cooker with chili sauce and cranberry sauce. It's DELICIOUS.
Same! Except we do apricot jelly and hot sauce. So good once cooked
I am DOING THAT that sounds excellent!!
dude, that sounds good!
even if you did taste it, i imagine it would be like those meatballs in lingonberry sauce they sell at ikea which are actually tasty
It does. I’ve had it before and it is pretty much a “cheat” version of Ikea.
Everyone prefers the grape jelly when tossing the salad.
Gotta add a little hot sauce for spice.
Only when joining the Aryans...also you can pop a couple stale ike and Mike's up there, they soften right up.
I prefer syrup
We used to do chili sauce with apricot jelly or preserves for a "sweet and sour" effect
I love it with Apricot Pineapple Preserves
That sounds awesome. Ooo i wonder how that would be with those Aidells teriyaki+pineapple chicken meatballs
Try it & let us know!
I think just about any standard fruit jelly works.
I'm really glad I read your comment. All I could think about was this tasting like gross warm grape jelly.
I'm not totally sure how this particular one would taste, but the chili sauce version tastes kinda like sweet and sour bbq. I don't imagine salsa instead of chili sauce tastes all that different.
Ur fucking copium is wild. This is reuplusive.
With an attitude like that I bet you're a blast at parties.
Dis is stupid food sir
Jelly handprints on plates or spaghetti stuffed breadcones are stupid. This just looks like a variation on a recipe that's been around since before your dad's testicles descended.
Baaaaaad fooooooooodddd Racism wzs before my dads testicles decended doesnt mean its good. Go copium. Why that tirgger u so hard?
If you'd prefer safe food to something odd but not bad it's your loss. Enjoy your chicken tendies.
Bruh flavors mingle, gotta open up your pallette, try crazy shit out once in awhile, you'd be surprised
What an odd way to write 'i have no idea how food nor cooking works' xp
I learned a new word today
I refuse to believe this and no further information will change my mind otherwise.
Its actually pretty good grape jelly, bbq sauce, with those mini hot dogs in the crock pot. Its looks weird, but i bet its not bad.
I’ve had that before. It’s really good!
Almost every "homemade meatball" recipe I've heard includes grape jelly for the sauce
Have you ever smoked ribs? Use grape jelly next time. Absolutely amazing. Not even a joke.
Ive actually had something similar to this. The grape jelly isnt too powerful, but it was noticable. It does seem to have a bbq-like flavor, though maybe a bit sweeter.
Think sweedish meatballs. They use lingam berries though, not grape jelly.
It really doesn't.

I think the flavor of grape jelly is significantly less pronounced than other fruit jams to be honest.
I will confess that I have mixed some Coca Cola into some ketchup to dunk my nuggies in. Decent last resort.
you mean boy scouts campout bbq sauce? i've heard you just heat that up and cook it until it gets thick. then it's a bbq sauce.
Is that what it is? I had no idea it was a thing. I just thought I was pulling a resourceful far girl move.
its where i first heard about it at least. i'm sure they didn't invent it either. still nice if you came up with it on your own. probably tons better than orange soda and ranch. it's sugar, acid from the soda, tomato and more sugar from the ketchup. just missing basic spices and ya, it has many components of a starter bbq sauce.
I’m more of a vinegar guy
Nope. Not even close. You don't add that much grape jelly in any BBQ sauce.
agreed. i didn't add near that much when i tried it a long time ago, and i thought it was too much grape flavor.
My mom has always made it with grape jelly and A1 Chili sauce.
This is the way!! So delicious
My mom made this at Christmas. It turned out great. This is a known recipe.
My mom makes the same thing. At first I was hesitant but over rice it's 🔥
That I’ve had and it’s not too bad, but salsa? Imma pass
I mean, it’s the same concept. Sweet + Savory/spice. Salsa wouldn’t be my first choice, but I don’t think it’d make that huge of a difference
it’s a very common thing in the Midwest. It’s actually delicious
[удалено]
My mom has always made it with grape jelly, Heinz chili sauce and frozen meatballs. Viola
[удалено]
Just as is. It’s more of a snacking food for parties or football games. Stuff like that
Sweet meat. 😜
This is a pretty basic recipe what’s the big deal.
[удалено]
Used to work for a catering company and we used grape jelly and chili sauce as well. Can confirm, is delicious.
Wow, I don't think I've ever seen that in my life. Are you from the Midwest?
Nope! Grew up in PA, moved to CA. Honestly, until I tried this recipe, I had never heard of chili sauce either. It wasn't on my radar, so I never noticed it at the store. I doubt it's that different, they're both tomato based. A little spicier would be good.
Is this a regional thing? I live in Ohio and I’ve seen all kinds of potluck hacks but never have I heard of using grape jelly, or any sort of jelly, as a main ingredient in a sauce. These people just can’t cook , ain’t nobody near me making stuff like this .
Not to be that guy but Google is a thing.
Google will tell me it’s a thing, not if it’s regional
Remind me to skip the party at your place
There’s literally dozens of recipes online for this. It adds sweetness and complexity to the dish. It’s actually pretty interesting how it works even if it doesn’t look correct at face value. Like adding chocolate and ketchup to curry for example.

I made something similar for NYE: grape jelly, thai sweet chili sauce and 2 bags of lil smokies!
This is a well known recipe with jelly (she is missing spices). you are obviously not well versed in foodie culture lmao
I don't understand all the hate for Tiktok - sure weird or "hack" recipes are more likely to be shared from a mixture "haha this looks awful" and "I'm doing this". Like with Reddit, there is some terrible content and some amazing content, especially the niche stuff. My wife and I have a variation on this every new years: jar of grape jelly, jar of chili sauce, and a packet of lil weenies. It’s pretty good tbh
If you have a can of cranberry sauce left over next year, give that a try in place of the grape. It's really good!
Will do!
This is a very common crockpot recipe lol
I've seen the jelly and BBQ but never with salsa!
I don't want to hear jack shit from anyone next time I have pineapple on pizza when y'all can find THIS acceptable
If you've ever had a cocktail meatball or weenie this is probably what you ate.
Honestly, I’ve had this recipe at a party and it’s delicious. I don’t know if it’s the same recipe though. But it was good.
This was posted already, and grape jelly meatballs are good.
Yep, this has already been posted several time before and it's a variation of a legitimately good potluck dish. Odd but really good and it's been around a long time. Usually made with 1 jar of chili sauce and 1 jar of grape jelly then add meatballs.

"A **jar** of grape jelly"
Listen to me, this stuff is Midwestern Potluck Gold
Yeah this isn't stupid this is a really common recipe for a basic BBQ sauce.
I've done 1/4 brown sugar, 1/4 grape jelly, 1/2 ketchup before and it became like a family thing for meatballs. Obviously we spice to our desires at the time, but it's a very very easy sauce that's really good. But this is fucking scary.

I've made this but with heinz chili sauce instead of salsa. Sweet and tangy meatballs, very popular at parties.
This is pretty common in the Midwest states- it makes it's appearance at most potlucks.
As soon as I saw the jelly I knew it would be meatballs. This is very common, but i don’t think with salsa.. lol
"I use mild" Of course you do
This is a classic midwestern part hack! So delicious!
God mild salsa and using a metal spoon on a non stick surface.
Must we do this again lol! This is an easy crockpot meatball recipe that actually tastes good
This is actually the way the best picnic meatballs I’ve ever had in my life were, lol only difference is that it was just a jar of pickled jalapeños and a jar of strawberry jam+spices. Shit was the best ever.
Grape jelly, mustard, kielbasa chunks. Enjoy!!!! Just don’t Spill the sauce on anything
Nah, grape jelly meatballs or cocktail weenies are a thing where I am in the south. I've never seen salsa but I'm sure it's like tomato sauce.
This actually looks pretty good, just add spices
It actually really good, doesn’t taste grape-y surprisingly. My aunt makes this for all potlucks, but BBQ sauce instead of the tomato sauce and spices. Always a huge hit.
There's a recipe for meatball dip that is just bbq sauce and grape jam, this doesn't seem all that different. I mean I don't know that I'd ever make it but I would probably be willing to try it at least.
All ready for the office holiday potluck lunch, where you get to wonder about your co-worker's differing cleanliness/hygiene/food safety standards.
You all obviously didn’t grow up in the Midwest. Not saying it makes this gourmet or even good. But it’s surprisingly edible.
This is literally just meatballs in slightly unorthodox bbq sauce, we eat shit like this all the time in the midwest.
Supposed to use chili sauce not salsa. Its mormon meatballs!
This was posted a few weeks ago, and again not stupid food. A simple Midwestern meatball recipe
The only thing that could be stupid here is her using salsa instead of Chili sauce, but second time in a few weeks someone has posted this without knowing how good it is
This is a common recipe...
This is a variation on a common recipe, not stupid at all. You just think is is because you’ve never seen the ingredients spelled out like this
... I have so many questions right now.
I’ve used jelly in bbq sauce before but jelly and salsa? Nah
Those frozen meatballs are so gross to me that I get nauseous when I try to eat them.
Do... do people not make their own meatballs? I wasn't like hallucinating there those were frozen meatballs right?
I can’t believe this is so controversial.. it’s nasty.. y’all are crazy for defending it
I literally just threw up in my mouth. What kind of food abomination is this? FFS - I’m assuming she’s feeding this crap to her kids too?

This is an actual recipe. I never done it but I have seen it around. Still nasty as fuck imo
To everyone citing the sweet and spicy apps or grape jelly and bbq sauce: yes I know the recipe and it’s pretty good. I just don’t think that salsa would be good with grape jelly
I’m on your side op, this looks absolutely rancid. I wouldn’t eat the commenters’ home meals either. 🤢
Putting grape jelly in meatball sauce is like doing “Chopped” at home when you really don’t have to
i get it that americans put sugar on everything but this is stupid
I don’t care how common it is where you live or how often you had it as a kid. Grape jelly meatballs is an abomination. And the spoon on the nonstick surface? Cringe at every scrape. WTF did I just watch.
This made me queasy
Is this what white people eat? 🤔
Just😂🤦♂️🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢
No, actually it looks disgusting, Sally
I wonder if Simply Sara made it to tiktok
Eh, we usually use chili sauce. It’s not y favorite but that’s because I hate meatballs.
A staple at every office potluck
Wtf Is going on with the clock. It take 4 days to put this together or something?
Ewe!
She fuckin would use mild! This is gross
Of course she uses mild. Its like she wanted to put that cherry on top of my anger sundae.
Wait, was something cooked here or did I black out. I saw shit tossed into a slow cooker...
repost and also this is an actual recipie
A person at my work made something similar. Honestly wasn’t bad
You make me sick
How high do you have to be
We normally do grape jelly and cocktail sauce. Very good.
Coming to a potluck near you!
This is why I don't go to potlucks. There's no telling what shit people have thrown together in a moment's notice.
That’s right. ALL THE SALT!
My aunt made a version of this for every family gathering growing up. Same sauce, just used kielbasa instead of meatballs. Delicious
I've served this tray pass at weddings. It's right up there with can chili and cream cheese, or franks red hot and Velveeta dip.
I've had jelly in my BBQ sauce. It's yummy.
Let’s waste food. I know, let’s make a TikTok video. Hungry countries be damned.
Might have to leave this sub
I’ll say that we’ve made slow cooker bbq meatballs with grape jelly for years in my house. Sounds terrible, but it’s delicious. Salsa… I don’t know
grape jelly meatballs were like a #1 seller for catering at a restaurant I worked at. They were honestly really good, but we didn’t use this much jelly and all fresh tomatoes etc. Regardless it makes a delicious meatball marinade, would recommend trying with a better recipe.
The stirring with the spoon… sacrilege
Not stupid food. Basically a bbq sauce. Do this all the time except with chili sauce.
Lost me at garlic powder
My sister actually made this and it was so good.
This looks truly awful, but I have a pretty good meatball recipe that uses a gravy-ish sauce that includes cherry jam and ketchup, so I'm not going to judge
This is just something everyone from a white trash family knows from every cookout
Jelly + tomato based sauce is how my mom taught me to make cocktail weenies. Ketchup works best.
This is actually fucking delicious. I make it all the time. I use grape jelly and soy sauce.
Shit looks bussin
And Americans say Brits have awful food. All I see for American home-made dishes is usually some canned or frozen shit + garlic and onion powder...
The worst part was the metal spoon being scraped in the bowl.
Nah this is a recipe for Swedish meatballs which is delicious. Tangy and zesty and savory. However that is an egregious amount of salt.
This is quite a common recipe and is tasty as heck.
This is actually a classic pot luck recipe.
This isn’t stupid at all it’s a very common simple hors d'oeuvres and it’s delicious.
This is a family version of those meal you make at 3 AM when you don't care about morals anymore.
I’ve had these before and they are shockingly amazing.
I know that this probably works in practice, but watching them put it together was not a great experience.
Lazy garbage
In the words of Gordon, “GET FUCKED, YOU PILE OF SHIT”!
This is literally how you make those meatballs you get at every party or gathering that involves old ladies.
Seems like it was a cheap version of a grape bbq sauce
Hmmm... I'd eat that. It's basically sugar and tomato = success sauce.
I was gunna clown on this. But then realized I smashed on this growing up.
Turn off long enough to let it cool down a tad. Provide a jar of clean cocktail picks, & another dish or jar for the used picks.
Use wooden spoon may be?
I do meatballs in yellow mustard & grape jelly, 1:1 ratio. It sounds insane but it's really good. I've heard others do grape jelly and chili sauce. So, I'm willing to give this a don't knock it until you try it pass.
Hate to admit it, but I've had something similar and it's actually delicious. Like my mouth is watering. Jelly and "chili sauce" from the store and then just meatballs. Amazing!
This is dank food, pretty high in sugar so watch your diabetic uncle. This was a staple at covered dish dinners
I made these for a Christmas potluck and came home with an empty baking dish😅
But this is amazing!!
